Good EVDO Modem/Dongle for running 23 hours a day.

Posted: 03 Mar 2014 02:43 AM PST

I just came back from the BSNL CSC and they confirmed that I can get an EVDO connection at 400 for only sim and 1352 for data card also(forgot to ask the name of it) but I think its the Pritvi one). Anyways, if I need to buy a modem, which one will be the best? Suggestions? And also what are the chances of getting the Photon Max modem unlock successful? Percentage? At first I planned to get a router and the pritvi modem. But one of my friends suggested to get the Photon Max. My budget for Modem + Router is 3000. Please suggest what will be a better option.
And one more question, how good will be the signal strentgh from the 1st floor if I live around half a kilometer away from the BSNL tower?

Best option for 3g dongle in Gurgaon?

Posted: 03 Mar 2014 02:33 AM PST

Guys,

Are there any non wired options (aka 3g dongles) which have high speeds with 30gb downloads or more?

Apparently it's touch to get broadband where I am (Phase 2) and I'll need 3g dongle. Price doesn't matter as long as it's below 2.5k (give or take 500), just what can I do?

Best and fastest? (I have tata photon from work and it's absolutely rubbish here, do not even recommend tata please).

For wired broadband, Airtel put the phone down once I give my address (wtf.. how crap is their customer service), youbroadband say they can put it in my house (it's like a homestay with 6 other rooms in building). Any suggestions from wise minds here?

Thanks!

TV tuner card information

Posted: 03 Mar 2014 02:12 AM PST

Namaste Everyone,

I have a few basic questions so please bere with me if my questions are a bit silly :)

I would like to watch some TV on my desktop system, naturally i would need a TV tuner card for that.I have very little knowledge about TV tuner cards so i was hoping some people here could help me out.

I am planing to buy a tuner card which has got HDMI as well as RCA connectors(if avalable).

Firstly let me explain my home setup.

We already have 2 settop boxes (tatasky+) connected to two TVs and my system is miles apart from both of them(so taking RCA connectors from them is out of question.)

Asuming that i already have a TV tuner card:

If i just connect the RF cable(coming from the dish) to the TV tuner card, would the card be able to decrypt the signal by itself and i can view the channels through the given software or windows media center(win 7).

OR

Do i have to get a new set-top box and connect the RF cable to it and connect the RCA/HDMI(in the set top box) cable to the TV tuner RCA/HDMI connectors?

ACT Broadband - Worst Broadband ever! Not reliable.

Posted: 03 Mar 2014 01:54 AM PST

I'm from Bangalore and I've been using ACT Broadband for 5 months. ID 10712212

As the title says, it's the worst connection ever!!

Here are the issues I've observed so far:

  1. Frequent disconnection (downtime for 10 to 15 minutes once every 2 days, sometimes it gets resolved in 5 minutes)
  2. If you've have to login to portal to use the connection, do remember, the session will timeout after 24 hours. So whatever you are/were doing, will get disconnected 24 hours after your last login (This is a nightmare for me, since I play games and download stuffs.) I've tried to use so many plugins to somehow keep the session active, but all failed. So yeah, it's their servers that kick my session off after 24 hours and there is nothing I can do from my end unlike other websites and it's hard to keep track of last login time to get prepared for a disaster disconnection.
  3. After 2 AM, there is a high chance for more packet loss. God knows why that happens.
  4. I play more MOBA and FPS games and trust me, this connection is no good for gaming. You'll get disconnected every now and then or you'll lose some frames due to packet loss. I do have backup internet connection, which is Airtel 2 MBPS connection and it's 10 times better (reliable) than this 25 MBPS ACT broadband. Of course, when browsing website, you won't notice a difference since websites do wait few more seconds for your packets to arrive before timing out. But that's not the case with Gaming, Every packet loss counts and it drives you mad. I've tried to explain how gaming affects me (not as same as browsing, since we don't see much difference) to ACT customer care, but all they ask is, "Okay Sir can you try again browsing some other website?" WTF!
  5. Also when watching movies, the movies need to be reloaded again, because this connection do lose some fragments on the way and never recover. So all the buffers is wasted and need to be buffered again. Yes I can agree, it has good speed and can load movies faster. But you'll lose more bandwidth since you'll have to reload it again. This happens to most of the websites like Viooz, putlocker etc., also this happens very rarely on youtube. I've tested watching movies on the viooz and putlocker sties using my Airtel 2 MBPS never had any issues.
  6. Customer support is not 24/7 (Of course since they're new to the ISP world and might need some time to have 24/7 support, at least they could have Technical support 24/7 for God's sake) but if you lose your connection late night (which do happens all the time) you have nothing to do other than playing spider solitaire unless you have backup connection like me.
  7. Also this is no connection is no good for some streaming sites, like twich.tv. But never had any issues so far with VOIP luckily.
  8. Their DNS servers sucks.
  9. When I called their customer service and asked them which WAN protocol they use, they put my call on hold, and then they said they use DHCP, LOL. Then I had to abbreviate WAN (Wide Area Network) and later they told me they use PPP. #Something for network engineers

I've been waiting for Google Fiber to available in Bangalore (I really hope it happens sooner) or at least Airtel comes up fiber broadband.

Problems Porting my Number to BSNL

Posted: 03 Mar 2014 01:30 AM PST

Hi,

I am using VODAFONE network, and in my area we are facing network issue (even my friends and colleages), when on a call every 10 seconds the sound goes OFF for about 20 seconds.

Getting totally frustrated with it, i planned to go for Number portability to BSNL Network.

I went to BSNL office (10 kms from my place) I filled all forms and submitted the proofs ( i am from Andhra Pradesh, currently living in Bangalore).
They didnt accept the Proofs from different state, they said they need proof of residence in Bangalore, i asked if i can submit my owner's Electricity Bill, they said Yes.

So i went back (10 kms) took electricity bill Xerox copy and submitted them, but this time they needed a signature of my Owner on it.(couldnt they have mentioned this earlier ?)
So again i went back (10 kms) got the signature on the Xerox from my Building Owner.

As if it was not enough, they asked me to get my building owner's ID Proof.

That was it, i really got pissed off. I finally went back and ported my Number to AIRCEL network.

I wanted to know, is it really this hard to port my number to BSNL ?
Why are they treating the customers like that ?

Do i really need to submit my local residence proofs too ? ( I submitted my Passport, License and PAN Card, but still they were not satisfied).

Airtel connection at Hennur Cross

Posted: 03 Mar 2014 01:06 AM PST

Hello Airtel,

I have been using Airtel service for more than 5 years and was very happy with the Broadband service. I had to shift my home to new locality in Bangalore which is 3.5 Kms from Ring road (Hennur Cross, K Narayanpur Cross). Customer service checked for feasibility and said the extension point is 1 kms away from the given address. I know this place had many apartments like Gina Ronvilla, DX Max, YMR and also Ferns Residency.  Given these many prospectus customer base it make logical to put extra cable to this place. Please let me know if you do so.

Blandings

Posted: 02 Mar 2014 10:26 PM PST

Blandings will star Timothy Spall as the amiable and befuddled Lord Emsworth (Clarence to his friends), with Jennifer Saunders as his indomitable sister Connie. The six self-contained half hour episodes are written by Guy Andrews (Lost In Austen, Absolute Power) who is also executive producing.

Danny Cohen, Controller, BBC One, says: "PG Wodehouse was a comic master, and we are very excited about bringing his stories to life for a new generation of television viewers. I'm sure that the equally brilliant Timothy Spall and Jennifer Saunders will do justice to Wodehouse's work, and I hope Lord Emsworth can put up with all the noise of the production."

Describing the series Guy Andrews says: "Blandings Castle is dysfunction junction, the home of a chaotic family struggling to keep itself in order. Clarence Emsworth, ninth earl and master of Blandings Castle, yearns with all his soul to be left in peace; preferably in the company of his beloved pig, The Empress. But he never is. There is always someone who wants him to do something. Presiding over the blitzkrieg on his equilibrium is the baleful figure of his sister Connie, with whom he shares the house; at her shoulder is Clarence¹s brainless younger son Freddie and a panoply of friends, enemies, servants, spongers, private detectives, bookies and confidence tricksters.

"Only Beach, his loyal and long-suffering butler, provides consolation. Storm-battered Clarence, somehow never vanquished, occasionally makes everything right through an inspired or accidental intervention.

"For any writer, it is the rarest privilege imaginable to have Wodehouse legitimately available as source material. Instead of just stealing from him as we usually do."

HTML5 Video Playback Speed Controller for Google Chrome

Posted: 02 Mar 2014 10:07 PM PST

Lean in and speed up your video learning with handy shortcuts to accelerate, slow-down, and rewind your video via your keyboard.
HTML5 video provides a native API to accelerate playback of any video. The problem is, many players either hide, or limit this functionality. For best results playback speed adjustments should be easy and frequent to match the pace and content being covered: we don't read at a fixed speed, and similarly, we need an easy way to accelerate the video, slow it down, and quickly rewind the last point to listen to it a few more times.
Once the extension is installed simply navigate to any page that offers HTML5 video, and you'll see a speed indicator in top left corner. Hover over the indicator to reveal the controls to accelerate, slowdown, or rewind the video (10 seconds + lowers playback speed). Or, even better, simply use your keyboard:
- a - will rewind video 10s and lower playback speed.
- s - will lower playback speed.
- d - will accelerate playback speed.

Horrible speed courtsey of ACT Broadband Bangalore

Posted: 02 Mar 2014 09:49 PM PST

I am a new customer of ACT broadband, just a couple of months.

My connection speed of download is not even 1 MBPS forget the much advertised 15 or 20 MBPS....

My complaint #1756349 was logged a week back and no updates... All they have provided is lame excuses like my browser has to be changed, there is a virus in the network :-)

Pls beware of ACT
