TataSky 7.1 Dolby Digital Plus, how to get Posted: 06 Feb 2014 11:52 PM PST For those who want to enjoy 7.1 Dolby Digital Plus or Dolby Digital 5.1 sound with tata sky +hd, plz do the following Buy an AVR/DAC with Dolby Digital + decoder and a set of 7.1 speakers connect them to Tatasky +hd Box with HDMI cable only (use Coaxial and optical for upto 5.1ch) go to organizer-> User Settings->audio settings set Hdmi to Dolby Digital(if Avr is connected through HDMI) or Spdif to Dolby Digital(If AVR is connected with coaxial or optical). by this your 7.1 system(HDMI connection) has been setup but u will still get 5.1 sound because, not all contents are in 7.1 sound, so choose a movie which as per internet information says that has DD+ 7.1 sound like RAOne. 2nd and most imp thing the box supports 7.1 but the firmware in +hd box is still old and supports only Dolby Digital. to get Dolby Digital plus(7.1) the STB firmware has to be upgraded. I have already mailed tata to do that and I request all of u to plz ask tata sky to upgrade the firmware of STB to support Dolby Digital Plus along with Dolby Digital. Once they upgrade it, you will see the option of DD+ in Audio Settings along with DD and PCM. set it to DD+ to get 7.1 sound when a 7.1 content is shown. |

Testing ATM OAM segment ping... FAIL Posted: 06 Feb 2014 07:53 PM PST Hello, I have an unlimited 512kbps MTNL ADSL connection in New Delhi. Ever since I upgraded from 256 kbps to 512 my internet connection keeps dropping very frequently, many times when it is in the middle of loading a page, it'll just hang, then i'll reload the page and itll come up at regular speed. The thing is that this will happen every 20-30 seconds! Basically this is the diagnostic test report: >> Testing Ethernet LAN connection ... PASS >> Testing ADSL Synchronization . PASS >> Testing ATM OAM segment ping ... FAIL >> Testing ATM OAM end to end ping ... FAIL >> Ping Primary Domain Name Server . PASS >> Ping Yahoo! ... PASS So basically this is an ATM OAM issue. I have been hounding MTNL for 3 weeks and they are absolutely clueless, its quite comical seeing the lineman try to figure it out! Oh, and after looking around for a solution I found one where someone advised changing the TCP MSS to 1360 bytes (from 0), so I did that and the issue did improve a bit, however the above diagnostic still keeps happening with both the ATM OAMs still failing and the connection still going idle, though a little less often. Anyway, this issue is killing my productivity, someone please help! Cheers, Kabir |
Posted: 06 Feb 2014 07:49 PM PST This is a short review of Nextra fiber to the home (ftth) broadband for anyone else wondering whether they should take the plunge. I had earlier thought to wait for a week and then post but seeing how i had time on my hands and how stable and smooth everything is going I am doing it now, will post any negative developments here if they do occur. Minimum speed offered is a fast 10mbps, i have subscribed to 10mbps 80GB FUP @ 1899 as going further up was mostly a waste for me with just 5 internet sharing devices, with most of the heavy lifting being done by the desktop. An awesome difference from adsl is upload and download speeds are nearly the same.. Post FUP is a manageable 512kbps up and down...something i griped about a lot with airtel with its 256kbps. A minor detail is that the fup data is calculated on a prorated basis-Even though i subscribed on the 30th, my billing cycle is 20/19 and the data in my balance was 53.xxGB and not 80 which was to be used till the 19th. There would also probably be monthly fluctuation for the 30/31/28 days (unlike airtel with constant 80GB). I was on airtel bb for the last 5 years with speeds progressing from 256kbps to 512 to 2mbps to the final 4mbps (when 8mbps suddenly became feasible for my area faced with competition from nextra) for the last month of its usage. Airtel was much better than what i had been used to before, but with its own often deeply irritating flaws and crappy experiences. It will not be missed ![]() Installation Fiber had already been installed upto my house leading upto an ericsson modem which has outputs to a lot of stuff, the society intercom being one of them. Installation was just a matter of connecting the ethernet cable to my own WiFi router, registering this router's MAC with nextra (something that needs to be done again if you change your router), and setting the internet connection mode to DHCP. The tech exec was quick to show up and the connection was up and running within 18 hours of document collection. You immediately receive a password for the nextraworld website on your registered mobile number. Initial Issues Websites sometimes would fail to load and show up as a blank page instead, a deeply irritating issue which will scare you to make any sort of financial transactions with the connection (even though i know there are safeguards in place). The exec was helpful enough to troubleshoot and gave an assurance it will be fixed within the day. Posted about this on another thread. The issue seemed to originate with nextra's banner ad injection on webpages sometimes. It was being used to show the customer promotional offers and other information for the connection. Something that I did not like one bit. Called up the cust care, the operator was quick to understand my problem and did not deny the practice or give any mindless reason like malware. Assured that it would be forwarded to the backend and be deactivated. Sure enough I received a call from the backend from a well spoken exec and he confirmed my request for disabling this 'feature' a final time and that was the last I saw any injections or that issue of websites not loading. It has been smooth sailing ever since. General usage Pings I am not an online gamer, I am content with single player mode Dirt 3 ![]() They are better than airtel, unlike what i stated before in another thread when i hadn't tested so thoroughly. Below are some comparative shots for a general idea- ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Speeds Speed is not very noticeable for lighter websites, though 1080p youtube now plays effortlessly and switches seamlessly to this mode and bitmeter reports full 10mbps when doing so. Something that is very important for me and that rarely happened with airtel. A 1080p youtube screenshot with bitmeter graph. ![]() Uploading is a similar story, dropbox uploads are speedy as well using nearly all of the bandwidth. Torrents from IPT yield full speed of 1.1 to 1.2MBps which i use a lot for tv shows (I don't abide by copyright laws for them ![]() ![]() ![]() Stability The connection is stable as ever but can only comment on this after some time. I have the modem and router hooked up to an APC home UPS i had lying around uselessly to avoid a disconnect in the time it takes for the society gensets to kick in. However, I have yet to see its results, the airtel connection would not drop with this setup, not so sure about fiber. Despite the earlier hiccups nextra did live up to my expectations. Airtel was very cooperative for a change for registering my disconnection request, and it would be done so within the week. Adios airtel. Bottom line: I can never go back to adsl again! |

I also heard they are giving 3g at 2g rates in my area these days. |
Is ACT cutting off your internet if you run Bittorrent? Posted: 06 Feb 2014 04:53 PM PST Of late I have noticed that if i start up Bittorrent my internet browsing stops working although Bittorrent itself is connected to the internet ie BTorrent will still be downloading/uploading.
If I completely quit Bittorrent even then my internet will not work for at least 10 minutes (although the connection itself is fine).
Is ACT doing this or is this caused by Bittorent itself? I have made some changes in Bittorrent (reduced no. of outgoing/incoming connections) but the problem persists.

Reqstg Tikona users in Bangalore to share feedback Posted: 06 Feb 2014 04:23 PM PST First of all, I don't have any other options for broadband as AirTel has ruled out the feasibility for a connection due to lack of ports in my apartment and ACT BB, who is my current ISP does not have feasibility to transfer my connection to my new apartment. |
Posted: 06 Feb 2014 04:16 PM PST Feedback whether positive or negative should be passed to the appropriate person. That's what I believe in.
This is the timeline of how my installation experience has been with ACT BB.
11 Nov-2013 - I applied for a new ACT BB connection today in Kundanahalli Gate, Bangalore. I will keep you posted on the developments.
11-Nov-2013 - Cheque payment made to Sales executive, Babu Reddy, details filled on form and submitted to him.
12-Nov-2013 - At 1616 hrs, IST I receive a call from Mukund who is the ACT technician saying that the wiring has been completed to my apartment on the third floor and i would be receiving a call today at 1700 hrs, IST for username and password. Mukund confirms that I can use my internet connection from tonight. http://reviews.cnet.com/routers/netgear-wgr614-54-mbps/4505-3319_7-21218238.html
In case, someone wants to have the contact details of the sales person & field engineer of ACT for Kundalahalli area, let me know. Speed test shows rocking upload and download speeds. I am on Act Force plan. 12-Nov-2013 1159, IST - First level checks indicate amazing speeds with YouTube where I can watch videos without buffering in Full HD. I will keep posting various workloads I consider to be bandwidth intensive and would update this thread.
Any downtime or disconnections will also be reported. |

Google Maps and Google Earth Updates Posted: 06 Feb 2014 02:25 PM PST "Google Earth utilizes broadband streaming technology and 3D graphics, much like a videogame, enabling users to interactively explore the world-- either their own neighborhood or the far corners of the globe," said Keyhole general manager John Hanke. Unlike Google Maps, Google Earth also lets users rotate their view to see terrain and buildings, and add annotations to maps. Google Earth can be downloaded for Windows; a Mac version is currently in development. Read more |
