Gigabit Router + Modem

Posted: 25 Nov 2013 02:45 AM PST

I'm planning to get a Gigabit Router and modem for my MTNL connection wanted to keep the modem and router seperate to avoid any disconnection so took this route , I'm looked around and since my love for Asus Router is on higher side i see Asus RT N15U and Asus RT N16U , and it seems RT15U is nothing but N13U with gigabit and great looks only concern for me being the vertical stand and connection LAN cables to it.RT N16 have DD WRT router but it seems a quite a old router now but still kicking ass against the older model , also there is TP Link WDR 4300 750 which i dont have much info on

For modem i see TP Link 8817 , DLink DSL-2520U or something else should i look for multiple Ethernet port in modem or just 1 would be ok ?

One year of Backblaze for USD 25

Posted: 25 Nov 2013 02:35 AM PST

I was sort of waiting for this one. Very good deal.

For the next three days only, you can get a whole year of unlimited backup with Backblaze for only $25 (50% off!)

This is probably the cheapest cloud service you can find in the market today. The only problem is that it is a cloud syncing service so you cannot use it to store data that you can later remove from your computer.

The traditional Boxing Day Test returns to South African shores for the 2013-14 season with India scheduled to play the first of three Tests in the home summer. CSA cancelled the fixture last season and opted to play three T20s against New Zealand over the festive period instead in the hope of attracting bigger in-stadium audiences. Although the matches were sell-outs, there was a public outcry about the lack of a Test match and with India visiting this season, the administrators have reinstalled the fixture and handed it back to its usual home, Kingsmead in Durban.

Yes Johannesburg this time rather than Centurion.

Which broadband is available in HSR Layout 1st Sector Bangalore

Posted: 25 Nov 2013 01:44 AM PST

I'm going to move to HSR Layout 1st Sector in the following week. I contacted Airtel and unfortunately they don't have network feasibility here. This absolutely surprises me to know that Airtel still don't have their network in one of the prime residential places of Bangalore. To be honest I searched all over the internet to know what all ISPs are available and there are not many. I heard of TTN network as most used broadband here in 1st Sector, but all over the internet its users are down voting and cursing it.

I hope this is my last resort to ask this question on broadband forum, if anyone is staying here in 1st Sector, do you know what all ISPs are available here? If you've heard of TTN Network, is it really that horrible as its users say?

I'm really internet starved and frustrated to my depths, this is my new home and they still don't have Airtel here. I can't stay alive on shitty Airtel 3G and expensive 4G anymore . Lord knows what the hell is taking so much time.

Guys, I'm from chandigarh and on 1350UL plan. (4mbps till 20gb 512after)

And its been 2 weeks since the problem is happening. I'm using Netgear n300. Net keeps randomly disconnecting. And i have to reset modem/router then it works and again down.. repeat

Dunno if its BSNL or the Router. What should I do? Laptop ain't the problem, as disconnection occur on my ps3/tablet as well.

Its been really annoying. Help a brother out?

Help needed regarding purchase of a router.

Posted: 25 Nov 2013 01:39 AM PST

I finally convinced my mum to ditch MTNL's ADSL connection and switch to FiveNet. I later realised that my DLink ADSL2+ router wont work with FiveNet. Now after a lot of researching, I found the following 2 routers the best for my use...

As you may know, I'm not a genius in this field and have no clue what important specs one should look out for when buying a router. Well, I want your help to decide which of the above 2 router I should purchase.

DD Direct Plus renames as FREEDISH with 120 channels

Posted: 25 Nov 2013 01:38 AM PST

http://www.indiantelevision.com/digital/y2k13/nov/novdig55.php

Direct to home TV (DTH) subscribers are in for a bonanza. And it's coming courtesy the government-owned Doordarshan which has rechristened its free DTH service DD Direct+ as FREEDISH. Not just that. It is all set to get a makeover à la its private sector DTH cousins and launch snazzy call centres. There's more: a new package of 120 channels which will require activation of a new range of consumer set top boxes (STBs) is being introduced.
DD sources say that the work contract for the same has already been finalised and the equipment is currently being shipped. "We currently have 17 million active subscribers and expect to add a million subscribers per month once we start the 120 channel STB service," says a DD official.

The pubcasters' current 59 channel STBs cost Rs 1200, while the 120 channel STBs are expected to be priced at Rs 1400.  The 59 channels include 21 DD channels and 38 other channels offering a wide variety of entertainment, musical, devotional, educational, news, international channels.
"We are now working towards offering 120 channels free of cost for a lifetime to DTH consumers," he adds.
So what happens to the old STBs? "Well, if the existing customers want to switch to 120 channel STB, they will have to buy the new one," says the official.
DD is also deviating from the past as subscribers to its FREEDISH 120 channel service will need activation of their STBs.

Good move by DD for "Aam Aadmi" :)

BTW Free DTH Service by BBC in UK is known as FREESAT.

Spectranet FOX

Posted: 25 Nov 2013 01:18 AM PST

recently i got this spectranet connection. They did underground fiber optic cabling and started the service called spectranet FOX in my area. the plan is 12 to 16 mbps  for 6 months. looking at the speeds they will provide, i got my airtel BB service discontinued.

I AM HIGHLY DISSATISFIED WITH THE CONNECTION.

 1) promised speeds 12-16 mbps ,you never get the promised speeds throughout the day. even right now i am getting just 3-5 mbps.

why do ISPs do this? come on! if you dont want to give constant speeds then why the hell do you have to make false promises?

when they visit your home for a demonstration, such good marketing skills, overselling their product, promising this and that.

but when it comes to the connection, its very poor.

2) its a daily glitch in the connection. from timings 9 pm to 12 pm i always get very low speeds like 1 mbps and very high pings touching 200 ms. i've got to play online games , but with such a pathetic ping im not able to play the games properly. and this is very irritating!

and this happens everyday

3) when i had the airtel connection i used to watch alot of youtube, surf internet and the data limit was 8 gb. with these activities not even half of my data limit was used, and around 4-5 gb was left unused per month.seldom, i used to download movies because once the data limit was reached, then speed degraded to 256kpbs(reason to change spectranet ISP). using this connection, in last 1 week the 5 gb of data usage has been shown in my spectranet account(5gb data volume used)

i myself have downloaded around 700mb of data THAT'S IT! i can accept even if i had watched 1080p HD videos on youtube, i could accept that i could've consumed data but still cant find what has used 5gb. if it could've been a theft over wi-fi, but whenever i am at home i connect through LAN cable and switch of the wifi service and whenever im not at home i switch off the router. then how come 5 gb of data has been consumed?! and i cant buy this fact that ONLY net surfing at watching videos on youtube would've consumed so much of data. i really find that spectranet is a cheat on this part.

if someone using the same net plans from spectranet and facing the same issues please reply and put forward some solutions to my problem, so as how to get the promised service from my ISP.

13 Days completed and no connection

Posted: 25 Nov 2013 01:16 AM PST

Hi,

My userId is 479122. (Complaint No: 0001421447)

I had submitted the documents and payment on 9th November. On 12th Nov, I got message the document is accepted and broadband will be connected within 10 days. On 20th I enquired about the status of connetion and was told that it will be done by 22nd and they will call me before coming for laying cable. on 22nd morning, I again called and enquired as it was already 10th day, they said cable will be layed by 23rd and connection will be active by 24th. I waited for call from them then again called in evening, when response was it will be done by 9:30 PM. Which didn't happened. Again when i called on 23rd, there was a standard response, "it has been escalated and this request is being taken on priority basis".

It has already crossed 15 days since i submitted documents.

I fear if this is the condition before they have given the connection, what will be the service when some fault happens. If i have to wait so long for getting the connection, I can wait for another 1 month before Airtel 4G tower is setup in my locality. Thankfully i didn't disconnected my airtel 4G connection. currently airtel 4G is dropping off frequently but at least I can work. If I wait for ACT to provide connection i'll be jobless for sure.

Just a thought if airtel can setup a new tower in 2 months for ticket resolution, can't ACT lay fiber cable in 10 days for new connection.

Regards,

Lokesh

BBG FN COMBO 600 speed is very slow

I am getting a very low speed on BBG FN COMBO 600 connection. I have tested it in "http://speedtester.bsnl.co.in/" and it shows as "417.10kbps" = "52.14 KB/sec" which is very slow.

Expected is "2Mbps" = "200KB/sec". What should I do ? Can someone throw some light on this ? Has anyone experienced this earlier ?

Fair Usage Policy - How many of you agree with my usage policy ?

Posted: 24 Nov 2013 10:14 PM PST

Although I have posted this here, it is applicable to anyone who has to deal with the shit called FUP. I have a 16 Mbps/80 GB plan from Airtel. Now there are some months where I do download beyond the 80 GB limit, but this is very rarely. Like say twice or thrice a year. Most of the time I am averaging 40-50 GB. Now, my point is shouldnt I be allowed to carry forward my unused data. I mean, I did pay for it. If not that then give me my money back for the unused data or adjust it with the bill. Are they any ISPs inside or even outside of India practicing this ? or am I just kidding myself.

Does Airtel support DSL Bonding (MLPPP)?

Posted: 24 Nov 2013 09:41 PM PST

What I need: Atleast 8 mbps Download and 4 mbps Upload for 1080p Skype video calls.

What I have now: 8 mbps Download but only 0.5 mbps upload. (Airtel)

I have no option of ISPs such as ACT which can offer 4+mbps of upload speed. Only Airtel or BSNL.

So i did some research and found that we can combine/bond multiple DSL connections (at ISP end by MLPPP) to increase the bandwidth.

Any idea if Airtel supports DSL bonding (in Bangalore)? Or do you guys have any suggestions about how I can get 4+ mbps of upload speeds..?

The young Japanese driver had a quietly impressive first full year of Formula 1, shaking off the wild reputation he had earned in the junior categories and delivering five points finishes.

Nakajima also steadily closed the gap to his highly-rated team-mate Nico Rosberg, eventually out-qualifying the rapid German on four occasions.

Hamilton pleased after maiden MP4-23 run

10 Jan 2008

McLaren's Lewis Hamilton is feeling positive after completing his first laps in the team's 2008 challenger, the MP4-23, on Thursday. Hamilton was in action at Jerez alongside new team mate Heikki Kovalainen, as the British squad continued their three-day private test at the Spanish circuit.

"It was fantastic to get my hands on the MP4-23 this morning in Jerez," said the 23 year-old. "I saw the completed car for the first time on Monday at the team's launch in Stuttgart and I have been pretty impatient since then! My first run was at 09:10 and my first impressions are encouraging.

"I covered over 103 laps, which is 456kms, today. Considering this is only the second day the car has been on track, I am pretty happy with that. We have a lot of work to do, but now we have a real understanding of where we are starting from. I will be back in the MP4-23 with Heikki tomorrow and I am looking forward to continuing the programme and moving forward."

Kovalainen, who got his first taste of the new car on Wednesday, alongside tester Pedro de la Rosa, was equally pleased with his own progress.

"Today was my second day with the MP4-23 and I have now been able to complete over 447kms in total," said the Finn. "We are all still spending time learning about the car and starting to get used to it. That we were on track for 204 laps in total today is definitely helping us to learn and progress with the car.

"For me in particular the car is very different from last year, and I have been focusing on that side of things. Settling into the team has been very easy."

Hamilton clocked the day's best time, a 1m 19.132s, while Kovalainen's best lap was completed in 1m 19.462s. The duo will continue to test at the track on Friday.
