Unable to ping / ssh between two computers over Beam Tele wifi Posted: 04 Aug 2013 02:43 AM PDT Hi,
I am subscribed to 25 mbps plan from Beam Tele. I have no issues with the speed nor with the FUP which is 70 Gigs. My problem is since I have a wifi router provided by Beam, I wanted to share data between my laptops over ssh. However, I am neither able to ssh nor I am able to ping over Beam connection. However, if I switch to my other connection (BSNL) I can easily transfer files between my computers over ssh.
Beam customer support is not very helpful. I am hopeful that I will be able to find help in these forums. |

Which company and model is recommended for bike batteries? Posted: 04 Aug 2013 02:32 AM PDT Looks like the Exide battery I purchased last year for my bike just last year is dead again. I found the warranty card but as usual, it is not filled up properly so there are no dates marked on it.
I guess I would buy a new one. And I think Exide is not recommended for bikes. I could not locate an existing thread but I think there was a discussion before where people recommended other companies for the same.
Which company's battery should I get this time around for my Yamaha FZ16? |

Posted: 03 Aug 2013 11:37 PM PDT I am hoping you might be able to point me in the right direction --
My parents live in Alaknanda and I am trying to set up a broadband connection in their apartment before I get there. I need a fairly fast connection (10Mbps) with low latency times (50ms?). I want to be able to set up the service for my parents to be able to use their ipads to play scrabble and facetime with us. Once I set it up (wifi router) I want the service to work with NO FURTHER INTERVENTION. I'd be willing to sacrifice some speed for reliability and pay a premium for the reliability.
1. What providers would you recommend? 2. I am unfamiliar with some of the jargon and would like some clarification, if possible:
Is broadband in India offered through an existing phone line ? dedicated Cat5/6? Coaxial RG5/6 cable? Fiberoptic T1 line?
3. Does the provider install the line coming into the apartment and provide the gear (modem router)? I noticed airtel has something called fiber net? any thoughts on how well they support their product?
Thank you for any help!

Very slow speeds on MTNL FTTH Fibre Network Posted: 03 Aug 2013 07:02 PM PDT For the last 3 days, I am getting speeds of 0.2 - 0.5 Mbps. While last week I was getting 9.8 dl / 4.8 ul.
I spoke with 2 people at MTNL. One mentioned that I had crossed the free usage cap, which is rubbish as when I checked with another person, I am well under it. The 2nd guy mentioned getting all the joints checked between my building and the exchange.

Weird BSNL Broadband Connection Problem :( Posted: 03 Aug 2013 12:30 PM PDT Hi, So, I am getting a weird problem with my BSNL Broadband. My password has been reset to "password" but its not working and I am getting error 691 (id/pass error). But I am putting all right info as I am not a new user but 5 yr old BSNL user.
So, it all started when there was some problem in my line and SNR value went down to 6. And then both phone and broadband were dead. DSL Link was not stable at that time. So, I complained and got my line rectified but still DSL link was not stabling. Then my local exchange change some jumper or etc. Then the link got stable. But now this error came ERROR 691 and that too when I never changed password and it was saved in modem from before. So, I thought maybe some generic error, I call customer care to reset my password. But even after then it wont work. I tried using all passwords i.e. my old one and the new reset password but its not working at all. All I get is Error 691.
So, anyone please help me how to solve it? What could be the possible reason behind this? Coz the exchange people told me that they can see that password was reset succesfully but still not working. My exchange people have no idea why its happening. They don't even know whats SNR Margin value. LOL
Currently my SNR is 7 but the link is stable. Only error is that dialing problem - ERROR 691. |

MTNL Broadband VDSL2 User Experiences Posted: 03 Aug 2013 10:53 AM PDT I wanted to start a new experience thread simply to discuss MTNL VDSL.
SNR margins (SNRM)
Higher you sync rate, lower the SNRM will be. Lower the SNRM, lower the connection reliability. Lower reliability means frequent disconnections. Hence ISP's have a setting in DSLAM to artificially increase SNRM value for a particular phone line. Hence you sync at lower rate and line automagically becomes stable.
Attenuation may not be that important after all. It reduces sync speeds over a distance but is not an indicator of connection reliability. (You can roughly calculate your line length from it. Do it here) Apply for VDSL connection only if you are within half km. Otherwise you will get ADSL like sync rates. I will update this entry with some of our findings. Since VDSL is somewhat new to India, this thread can help some early adopters.
Currently the speeds are decent for fast servers. But single streams are slow due to a bottleneck somewhere.

Fake BSNL speed test results ! Posted: 03 Aug 2013 10:46 AM PDT Hey! I don't know whats wrong with BSNL i am getting fake results on two of speed testing websites(I.e. Speedtest.net and bsnlspeedtest.in) . I have tried almost all the available servers in india. I am getting around 1.50 - 1.60mbps on all on them but whenever i try to download something ,the download speed stays at 115-120kBps ? Isn't it supposed to be 200+kBps ? I know i have a 1mbps FUPED connection but i am just curious why the hell i am getting fake results with BSNL network !! |
BSNL 3G connection disconnects every few minutes-Unstable connection- Electronic City , Bangalore Posted: 03 Aug 2013 10:42 AM PDT Hi all there,
I bought BSNL HUAWEI 3G 14.4 mbps data card in the year 2012 for 2600 and added plan for around 500 i remember so that time my initial cost to acquire bsnl 3g datacard connection with bsnl 3g 14.4 mbps data card or device was around 3000 Rs. I have been using there service for almost 10 months without much problem with very high speed when surfing late night like 2 or 3 am. I have seen speeds like 12-13 mbps while surfing and 100MB file download would take less than 9 minutes !
But since last 20 days my internet disconnects every few minutes. I have called the customer service but they say there is no problem in my account with it having good balance and all seems okay. I registered the complaint on
http://mis.bsnl.co.in/pgs/internet/pgwebregn.asp
and got a docket number. The case closed at the head office in two days time with the comment " Please check your device is properly connected and if problem persists visit the nearest customer service center which is like 10 KMs from here and costs 22Rs in bus + 50 Rs by auto = 72 Rs one way travel.
I went there and met the manager and she told me to call one man who seems to be a technical person there and i have been following up with him and he is going to send one person at my location to check the issue i believe. I am going to follow up with him and see if he can fix the problem. So far for the past 20 days I am with non existent bsnl 3g connection.
This is crucial time for me as i have a lot of important work on internet. I suggest you guys to have generic datacard and have the option to connect to any network like reliance or tata or any other in case one fails. If you depend on one network and it fails and no help comes your way for several days then its really a waste of time and money.
I had done a recharge of 550 Rs for 3 GB day + 4GB night( this plan has been discontinued now i hear) for a period of 30 days and out of 30 days I had hardly used my card for 7-8 days and since then i have a very unstable connection. It disconnectes every few minutes and it's a pain to connect again and again. I can't use the card on Linux machine at all as i have to unplug the device and plug it in back again to be able to connect so i have no option but to connect using windows which i am not a big fan of these days.
So not able to have consistent connection, disconnects frequently..sometimes as early as after 2 minutes of connecting to the netwiork.I am working on it and i am in touch with the technical guy at the bsnl. I wanted to share my experince and know if anyone else is having similar issue from my location? I have used my 3g data card from two locations in Bangalore : Electronic city and BTM area and both the places I am having the issue so i know it's not related to the area where I am.

Does Tata Docomo block tethering of 3G connection? Posted: 03 Aug 2013 10:40 AM PDT I recently ported my Vodafone connection to Docomo. I have a Nokia Lumia 920, but I realized that I'm unable to use my phone's data connection as a wi-fi hotspot. Other devices can connect to my Lumia 920 when internet sharing is turned on, but the connection just doesn't work on the other devices. But I'm able to browse the internet and download on my phone at 3G speeds without any problems. So I just wanted to know, does Tata Docomo block tethering of its 3G connections? If not, are there any manual seetings I need to enter, to enable internet sharing? Please let me know if ay of you are able to use a mobile Docomo connection as a wi-fi hotspot. If this has ben possible for you, that means there is probably some issue with my phone or settings. Please help me out. Thank you. |

Horrible Service by Tikona in Bangalore - Hebbal Kempapura Posted: 03 Aug 2013 10:01 AM PDT This is a verbatim transcript of an email I sent their contact center manager j.nair@tikona.in today
Hi all
I know that Mr. Nair will not read this email. All your customers who post their grievances on your forum cannot be wrong
I have a 4Mbps unlimited connection - User ID 1107736051
I stay in Bangalore and am connected through the Vishesh Complex Access Point
On and off I have been facing problems with the connection : No connection or dropping connection or low speed
The latest instance was yesterday
a) At 12:34 PM I tried your toll free number - the standard recording said that all agents were busy. Instead of offering a callback option, the message said that my number was noted down and that I would get a call back - that never happened.
c) At 8:50PM I called the tolled number and spoke with Aniketh believing that that the earlier callback requests were logged. I demanded that he puts his manager on the line. He said that if I want a manager I have to email this id. He did not even bother to understand why I was asking for a manager
d) From 8:50PM to 9:30PM I tried to send mails from both my Yahoo account and my daughter's gmail account - obviously neither went through because of the network speed issue
e) At 9:44 PM Rupesh took my call, confirmed that Aniketh had requested a senior to call me back and that the callback did not happen.
f) He 1st mentioned that he was unable to access the Bangalore AP. However on the 3rd attempt he was able to and said that the AP was good and that my roof top device was dropping signals. He organized an engineer's visit today
g) Your local engineer Raju ( Ph 9035882309 ) got the connection through but was not able to fix the speed issue. He said the issue was with the main Access point and that he would log a complaint with the concerned team. He seemed to be in a hurry to leave.
h) I called you tech support line around 1PM and spoke with Neha ( tolled number ) who said that the problem was not with the Access Point but with the roof top device. When I wanted to speak with a senior she offered a callback in 1 hour - that did not happen
i) I called back around 2:30PM spoke with a lady called Shalaka - who also offered a call back that did not happen
j) By that time we had a power outage and there was no power when I spoke with a person called Dinesh who said he was an L2. When I demanded that he puts a manager on the phone he said that ( a ) there were no managers on the phone and that he was the senior most person and ( b ) that if I wanted a manager I had to mail you.
k) Please tell me how on earth does a customer with a poor / dead internet connection mail your team in an emergency when your other staff are not helpful
My technical issue is still not resolved. What I have seen about Tikona till now is that :
1) You are a bunch of cheats - your IVR tells lies ( the callback requests are never logged ), your seniors do not heed the callback requests logged with your L1 agents. 2) When you reply to a customer's grievance it is very often in the form of an automated email that does not address the customer's issues
This mail goes verbatim on to your grievances forum and all other forums where Tikona customers have complained about your service
If any one wants to call me do so before 11:30AM - after that I leave for work and am not back till after 11:30 PM. I do not take personal calls when I am at work
