South Korea not happy with Barack Obama vetoing ban on Apple products in USA

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 02:53 AM PDT

http://www.readability.com/articles/2mcpudlx

The South Korean government on Monday expressed concerns about the decision by the United States to overrule a sales ban of some Apple Inc (AAPL.O) models.

The Obama administration vetoed a U.S. trade panel's ban on the import and sale of some older iPhones and iPads, reversing a ruling that had favored South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (005930.KS) over Apple in their long-running patent battle. The move was vehemently criticized by the South Korean media as "protectionism."

"We express concerns about the negative impact that such a decision would have on the protection of patent rights," the Ministry of Trade, Industry & Energy, said in a statement.

The White House basically overturned the ban on older Apple iOS devices in the US market.

Vodafone India Hutch Acquisition Taxation Fiasco

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 02:49 AM PDT

NEW DELHI: With the Income Tax Authorities raising a demand for Rs 12,000 crore tax, telecom giant Vodafone on Saturday asserted that no tax was payable on the USD 11.1 billion deal it did with Hutchison in 2007.

The mobile operator also said it is considering to appeal to the Bombay High Court to legally challenge the claims of the IT department.

The Income Tax department on Friday had asked Vodafone to explain why it should not be taxed Rs 12,000 crore for its USD 11.1 billion deal with Hong Kong-based Hutchison in 2007 for acquiring its assets (majority stake) in the Indian joint venture with Essar.

"Vodafone is considering its next move, which includes an appeal to the Bombay High Court -- as per the Supreme Court's decision -- to legally challenge the validity of the order on the preliminary issue of jurisdiction," Vodafone said.

The tax authorities had called Vodafone for a hearing on June 14, 2010, to discuss the potential quantification of any tax on the Hutchison acquisition.

"Whilst an amount of tax has been suggested by the tax authorities, it is important to note that this is not a demand for payment... Vodafone remains confident that there is no tax to pay on this transaction," it added.

The dispute concerns Vodafone Group Plc's acquisition of a 67 per cent stake in Hutchison Essar from Hong Kong's Hutchison Telecommunications International Ltd. The I-T department is of the opinion that the transaction is taxable in the country.

Earlier, Vodafone had also approached the Supreme Court, which had refused to intervene in the tax dispute between the telecom firm and the I-T department and had asked the department to check whether it has the jurisdiction to proceed further in the tax case.

Vodafone had paid USD 11.1 billion for Hutchison's 67 per cent stake in Hutchison-Essar (since renamed Vodafone Essar) in 2007.

The government approved the deal in May, 2007, itself. After regulatory clearances were given, the tax department issued a show-cause notice to Vodafone saying the company did not deduct tax, estimated at around USD 2 billion.

In 2007, Vodafone received a show-cause notice asking why it had not done this. Following this, the company approached the Bombay High Court.

After the high court dismissed Vodafone's petition challenging the I-T department's notice, the company moved the Supreme Court in January, 2009.

The Supreme Court granted Vodafone the right of appeal to the Bombay High Court if it disagreed with the tax authorities' determination.

Indian government does not want political parties to be answerable to Right to Information Act

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 02:46 AM PDT

The cabinet on Thursday gave its nod to keep political parties out of the RTI Act by approving changes in the law to overturn the central information panel's ruling on the issue.

The proposed amendment, to be placed before Parliament on Monday, states that the definition of public authority "shall not include any political party registered under the Representation of People's Act and no litigation related to this shall be entertained by any court of law."

"Declaring political parties as public authorities under the Right to Information Act would hamper their smooth internal functioning since it will encourage political rivals to file RTI applications with malicious intentions," stated the government's note seeking an amendment in the law.

The Old Reader pivoting to a restrictive model focused on limited number of users

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 02:41 AM PDT

This was bound to happen sooner or later. The Old Reader is also shutting down. [Not exactly though]

Since we launched first public version almost a year ago up until March 2013 we have been working on The Old Reader in "normal" mode. In March things became "nightmare", but we kept working hard and got things done. First, we were out of evenings, then out of weekends and holidays, and then The Old Reader was the only thing left besides our jobs. Last week difficulty level was changed to "hell" in every possible aspect we could imagine, we have been sleep deprived for 10 days and this impacts us way too much. We have to look back.

That's why The Old Reader has to change. We have closed user registration, and we plan to shut the public site down in two weeks. We started working on this project for ourselves and our friends, and we use The Old Reader on a daily basis, so we will launch a separate private site that will keep running. It will have faster refresh rate, more posts per feed, and properly working full-text search — we are sure that we can provide all this at a smaller scale without that much drama, just like we were doing before March.

Accounts will be migrated to the private site automatically. We will whitelist everybody we know personally, along with all active accounts that were registered before March 13, 2013 — those are the people who had consciously signed up for The Old Reader rather than were simply looking for "a Google Reader replacement". And of course, we will migrate all our awesome supporters and people who donated to keep the project running (if you sent us bitcoins, please get in touch to get identified).

Tor might not be as secure as you imagine it is

Security researchers tonight are poring over a piece of malicious software that takes advantage of a Firefox security vulnerability to identify some users of the privacy-protecting Tor anonymity network.

The malware showed up Sunday morning on multiple websites hosted by the anonymous hosting company Freedom Hosting. That would normally be considered a blatantly criminal "drive-by" hack attack, but nobody's calling in the FBI this time. The FBI is the prime suspect.

"It just sends identifying information to some IP in Reston, Virginia," says reverse-engineer Vlad Tsrklevich. "It's pretty clear that its FBI or its some other law enforcement agency that's U.S.-based."

Poor attendence record of the G Family

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 02:09 AM PDT

As many as 92 of the current Lok Sabha's 545 members have attended less than 50 per cent of the sittings in the House. With the last Monsoon Session of the 15th Lok Sabha beginning Monday, this list includes Congress vice-president and would-be prime minister Rahul Gandhi, who has attended 135 of 314 sittings.

An analysis of the attendance of members, as per information on the Lok Sabha website, shows that Congress president Sonia Gandhi fares no better. While Sonia's record (48 per cent attendance) is marginally better than son Rahul's (43 per cent), their BJP counterparts L K Advani (82 per cent) and Rajnath Singh (80 per cent) are clearly far more serious about their House duties.

In fact, all the front-row leaders in the House do better than Sonia, with JD(U) president Sharad Yadav at 83 per cent attendance, Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav at 86 per cent, RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav at 79 per cent, the CPM's Basudeb Acharia at 90 per cent, BSP MP Dara Singh Chauhan at 93 per cent, the DMK's T R Baalu at 84 per cent and the JD(S)'s H D Deve Gowda at 66 per cent.

Thankfully, GooPhone and LG have come to those customers' rescue by launching the first smartphones based on a new MediaTek Triple-SIM chip. Both the leaked GooPhone X1+ (shown above) and a just-shipped variant of the Optimus L4 II (after the break) can juggle three phone lines without a big hit to battery life. Neither tri-SIM phone is high-end: the X1+ reportedly carries a 5-inch FWVGA display and a dual-core MT6572 processor, while the L4 II sports a 3.8-inch HVGA screen and an unnamed 1GHz chip.

May any one suggest me service provider with reasonable competive call rate (without any RC) at Delhi ?

RBR signs Vettel for 2009

Thursday, 17 July 2008 13:21

Red Bull Racing has confirmed that it has signed Sebastian Vettel to partner Mark Webber in its 2009 driver line-up.
A vacancy opened up at the Milton Keynes-based squad following David Coulthard's decision to retire at the end of this season, and Vettel has been widely tipped for promotion from Red Bull's 'B' team Toro Rosso.
However there has also been speculation that RBR was trying to entice double world champion Fernando Alonso away from Renault, but the Spaniard remains non-committal about his plans for next year and has been linked to a move to Ferrari in 2010.
Team principal Christian Horner said he was confident that, despite Vettel's youth and relative inexperience, the 21-year-old German was the right choice.
"We are delighted that Sebastian will be joining us next year," said Horner.
"With David Coulthard announcing his retirement as a Formula 1 driver a fortnight ago at the British Grand Prix, after careful consideration, it seemed natural to announce his replacement here at Sebastian's home race in Hockenheim.
"As he was already part of the Red Bull family, choosing Sebastian as Mark Webber's team-mate was not a difficult decision.

Fernando Alonso News and Updates

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 01:34 AM PDT

Fernando Alonso topped the timesheets on his return to Renault today at Jerez lapping the Spanish circuit a tenth clear of countryman Pedro de la Rosa. It was an impressive return to the team for Alonso as he put in 70 laps with a best time of 1:19.503s.

It was a busy day for the McLaren Mercedes team with de la Rosa putting in 111 laps in his MP4-23 while Kovalainen sixth fastest, completed 130 laps in the new machine.

Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa were third and fifth fastest respectively for Ferrari with Nico Rosberg running well in his FW29 with the fourth fastest time.

Sebastian Vettel and Sebastien Bourdais proved closely matched for Toro Rosso Ferrari with the seventh and eighth fastest times while Mark Webber was ninth best in the Red Bull Renault.

Kazuke Nakajima rounded out the top ten in his Williams Toyota ahead of Timo Glock in the leading Toyota TF108 and Giancarlo Fisichella in the Force India Ferrari. Kamui Kobayashi brought up the bottom of the timesheets in the second Toyota while Super Aguri Honda did not run after problems encountered yesterday.
Renault continued its preparations for 2008 today with Fernando Alonso taking over driving responsibilities from Nelson Piquet.

It was an important day as it was Alonso's first appearance in Renault colours since being confirmed as a 2008 race driver in December.

Arriving at the Jerez circuit yesterday evening, the Spaniard spoke to the engineers to understand how the first day of the programme had gone, and to prepare for his two days work with the team.

His first day behind the wheel gave the Spaniard the opportunity to drive a car in accordance with the 2008 electronic regulations, and most significantly without traction control. It was also a good opportunity to reacclimatise to the team with which he has worked for six years in the past.

At the end of the session, having covered 70 laps, the overall result was an encouraging first day as Alonso topped the timesheet with a best lap of 1:19.503s.

Fernando Alonso
"The result of my first day in the car is encouraging. I could not wait to drive again, but at the same time I was a bit tentative. I quickly settled back in to the team and everything went well. We made good progress throughout the day, but there is a lot still to do. I had to adapt at first to the car and get used to driving the car without traction control, but I am convinced that that soon I will be used to this and will not remember what is was like to drive with traction control."

Frequent Disconnection / ADSL blinking Issue on MTNL Broadband

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 01:03 AM PDT

Hi,

I am a user of 849NU plan of MTNL Triband service since August based out of Navi Mumbai.

All of August, i was very happy to have a lovely connection and good speeds, with a pretty good tariff.
But now since the past 15 days I am suffering from very intermittent net connection.
Although I am connected to the internet, sometimes the webpages take ages to open, and never open, while at other times it opens instantly. Also downloading has the same pattern, sometimes I get very good speeds of upto 200 Kbps, while other times there is no download. Although all download sites show good Triband Speed, but it is the intermittent connection that is the problem.
This problem has crept up in the last 15 odd days, and I have tried everything but no change has been noticed.

Has anyone else faced a similar problem, and if yes, whats the work around. The people at MTNL classify this as a slow connection problem, but that is exactly not the issue, as I do get good speeds intermittently.

Somebody please help me.

Same scam. Textual content costs them nothing. You would pay when you load images and links. Freaking nuisance. Of course, on Android devices, you would end up paying a lot more for background internet activity as well. If you are already paying for a data plan, your savings would be negligible.

ACT broadband Bangalore worst service

I am a customer of ACT broadband for last six months, i opted for 15 Mbps 40 GB plan, from 1st of this month i started experiencing .38-.44 mbps speed, i lodged a complaint and the feedback i received are really funny

1. I utilised 40 GB in four hours of previous day , i don't know whether that is possible by anyone to use- No auto updates are on and i requested them, which website or to which ip the system was connected and used this ? No reply from them

2. Then the customer service executive told, i might have used a router without password, the funniest part is There is no router at my home and i connect the cable directly to one PC

3. I also heard similar issue from my friends, ACT is not a reliable service provider, This is the problem with the unknown brands, you get a grievance redressal .

I DON'T SUGGEST "ACT BROADBAND" IN BANGALORE FOR ANY ONE LOOKING FOR A NEW BROADBAND CONNECTION

Thanks,

Former Champ: Schu could return to racing

Saturday 1st December 2007

Former F1 Champion Alan Jones reckons Michael Schumacher may be considering a comeback after an impressive test at Barcelona two week's ago.

Although Schumacher retired from F1 at the end of the 2006 season, the German returned to action with Ferrari at the Spanish track in the first of the winter tests.

The seven-time World Champion proved to be the man to beat as he dominated the timesheets during his two days of testing.

And although Schumacher has stated many times that his test does not mean he will be making a competitive comeback, Jones reckons the thought has to have crossed Schumi's mind.

"After nearly a year out of the saddle, I can image him thinking, 'Maybe I'd like to have another go.' It must be just like coming back from an extended Christmas break," Jones told Autosport.

"He used to take a couple of months off at the end of each season, so another few months won't make a big difference. Two or three years might have done.

"It's a win-win situation: Ferrari gains from his expertise and he enjoys it. And you can never rule out a comeback - he might be thinking, 'I'm really enjoying this!' Money won't be his motivation, it will be to prove a point.

"Niki Lauda was out for several seasons and came back and won the title. Michael could do the same."

Schumacher misses Massa's wedding day

Dec.3 (GMM) A representative for Michael Schumacher has played down speculation that he may have fallen out with his former Ferrari teammate Felipe Massa.

In the presence of many of his Ferrari colleagues, 26-year-old married his fiancee Rafaela Bassi, who is 27, in Sao Paulo last Friday, according to reports from Brazil and Italy.

Among the 800 guests were team bosses Jean Todt and Stefano Domenicali, as well as Mario Almondo, Aldo Costa and Luca Baldisserri -- but not Schumacher, his 2006 teammate.

Massa's countryman Rubens Barrichello also attended, reports said.

Days earlier, the former seven time world champion, Schumacher, won a karting event hosted by Massa in the southern Brazilian city of Florianopolis.

The German newspaper Bild am Sonntag said Schumacher had celebrated Massa's impending marriage with his former teammate and friend in the days prior.

A representative for Schumacher said: "Michael is currently in the United States for a family vacation."
