MTNL VDSL2 experience

I wanted to start a new experience thread simply to discuss MTNL VDSL.

Some things to consider before/after taking a new VDSL connection

 

SNR margins (SNRM)
Below 9 dB : Poor experience with lots of HEC and CRC errors. Line will disconnect frequently.
9   - 11  dB : Ok but not ideal. Disconnections will be there if some unexpected variance is introduced by rains, humidity in the wire.
12 - 16  dB : Ideal and realistic value. Expect almost no disconnections as the line has more wiggle room for tolerating variances.
17 dB and up : God Mode. Lucky few get this on VDSL synced at 30 mbps and up. So far I have seen various stats and no one has reported this SNRM (That is because VDSL sync rates are always higher)

 

Higher you sync rate, lower the SNRM will be. Lower the SNRM, lower the connection reliability. Lower reliability means frequent disconnections. Hence ISP's have a setting in DSLAM to artificially increase SNRM value for a particular phone line. Hence you sync at lower rate and line automagically becomes stable.

 

Attenuation may not be that important after all. It reduces sync speeds over a distance but is not an indicator of connection reliability. (You can roughly calculate your line length from it. Do it here)

Apply for VDSL connection only if you are within half km. Otherwise you will get ADSL like sync rates.

I will update this entry with some of our findings. Since VDSL is somewhat new to India, this thread can help some early adopters.

 

Currently the speeds are decent for fast servers. But single streams are slow due to a bottleneck somewhere.

If the government loves to generate money from sale of cigarettes and alcohol... why is weed considered to be the bad boy?

I can drink booze but I cannot dope legally. What is the difference between the two!

The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority has recently said insurers can enter into agreements with one or more repositories. An insurance repository would provide a facility to keep insurance policies in electronic form and to undertake changes or revisions speedily. Policyholders could opt to digitise their policy or have it in the existing format. Irda has granted in-principle approval to five entities for entering the insurance repository business. These five have yet to launch operations. A senior official with one of these said, "We would launch operations within the next few months."

 

If this applies to auto insurance as well... What would traffic cops do!

Can anyone please tell me which is the best wired broadband (No FUP) in east delhi. I m a heavy downloader. I have heard of MTNL, Reliance, Pacenet, Spectranet etc. I heard that reliance is providing 4mbps thunder plans. Please tell me more abt it. Is it worth to install in my area? How's the performance of it in east delhi? or is there any other ISP which has better network in east delhi. Please do reply.

New Delhi railway station to get free WI-FI connectivity

Delhi has three stations. Only one of them is getting this feature. 

 

 

 

Once operational, passengers on all 16 platforms of the station will be able to access Wi-Fi from their laptops of mobile phones, the official said.

The New Delhi station was chosen on a pilot basis to introduce the facility at an estimated cost of Rs 80 lakh. "The system is expected to be operational in 3/4 months," the official said.

The company will install towers at strategic locations to provide the facility, which will be extended to other stations in due course, he said.

International pings are horrible on MTNL Broadband for 2 weeks now

Solution:

Quit MTNL. MTNL doesnt know how to fix DNS issue. (Its been 2 months now.. still problem persists.) 

Either go with Airtel or Joister Broadband.

As im facing PING issues on MTNL, and because of which my MTNL speed has also reduced to 1.4mbps (Im paying for 2MBPS connection).

 

And im a gamer, ofcourse we need better pings to Singapore and .. other Asian servers.
