Simplifying Tata Sky – Package Calculator Posted: 04 May 2014 02:48 AM PDT I recently got Tata Sky and I love it. It is definitely better than the ‘dabba’ cable. However Tata Sky has one major flaw – Channel Packages. Normally cable operators charge you a fixed monthly fee and in return, you get (theoretically) all the channels. But Tata Sky has this concept of ‘Packages’. In theory it is supposed to give the control in the hands of the customer. You select the channels which you want and pay only for those channels. But in reality, the system is hopelessly complicated. Being the simple guy that I am, I decided to make an app which would do all the number crunching for me and tell me the best (read Cheapest) plan for the channels which I select. Introducing ‘Tata Sky Package Calculator’: You do have a fair idea of which channels you watch. Simply select those channels in the app and when you have selected all the channels which you want, hit the ‘Continue >>‘ button. The app try all possible combinations of 4 main packages + 12 regional packs + 14 Add On packs + individual channels and will pick the one with the lowest cost. If you are happy with the plan, you can also send an email to Tata Sky reps to tell them to modify your package form the app itself. Just make sure, you have your ‘Subscriber No.’ in hand. *I don’t work for Tata Sky nor is this an official Tata Sky app. I made it for myself and it worked. I’m sharing it in the hope that others may find it useful. Remember with great power comes great responsibility! Give it a try here - Simplifying Tata Sky – Package Calculator | Inventika Solutions |
16th Lok Sabha General Elections of India Posted: 04 May 2014 02:40 AM PDT General Elections for electing 16th Loksabha members would happen in 1 year from now. It may even happen within 1 year as well if situation arises like current govt decides to call early elections or looses majority if coalition partners pull off support (which is less likely). So who could it be forming new govt? BJP or Congress? NDA or UPA? Narendra Modi or Rahul Gandhi? Sushma Swaraj or Manmohan Singh? Arun Jaitley or P. Chidambaram? What impact Arvind Kejriwal would have on these elections? And finally will any 3rd front succeed in forming govt at Centre?

How to configure BSNL Type 4 router to Reliance Broadband Posted: 04 May 2014 01:40 AM PDT Hello All, Im having BSNL dataone type 4 (UTStarcomm WA3002G4 router) which comes with 4 lan ports and wifi. Now I would like to use it for Reliance BroadBand connection as it is the only connection available in my area. I was able to configure it and use. But what actually I want is to use it for multiple systems which previously I was to able to do with same router for Airtel,Bsnl connections. Problem with Reliance is that userid, password details are to given in browser always. So is there any that it can be given in router directly and thereby using the router with mulitple connections. Regards, krishna. |

Why cant be Dlink Modem used as a Dedicated Router? Posted: 04 May 2014 12:42 AM PDT Hello Everyone.
I am working with BSNL as a Broadband technician for the last 2 years and ive came aross all kind of modem+routers but the most peculiar i find belong to Dlink.
Whenever i try to pair Dlink DSL modem+router (4 port) with any other service provider like Airtel or our local ISP Ortel i find that most of the time the Dlink fails to work.
Recently one of my clients wanted wireless capabilities for his Ortel Cable Internet . and brought a Dlink 2750u Dual Antenna Modem +Router (4 port with DSL, its a new model not the older one). Upon configuring the device i found that only the LAN sharing was working and the wireless was not working. So, i brought another Dlink 2750u from the office (a 3 year older model, single antenna). After following all the steps exactly as before this time the wireless was working but not the Lan.
I called up Dlinks customer support and they told 2750u is only for BSNL. i have worked with all kind of modems from a whole different range of companies ranging from TP-LInk to Digisol to our own BSNL modem. there is no problems configuring them as a dedicated router. why does the problem exists with Dlinks modem?
Or is there anything specific i have to do with Dlinks modem? have anyone else faced any kind of similar problem?
Would be grateful if anyone can help me. i really need to answer my clients haha
Just for a quick reference here is how i configured them: Lan cable from cable modem to dlink modem- bringing dlinks ip range in accordance to the cable modems ip. DHCP, NAT, tried both enabling and disabling them. no effect. Do i need to do anything with the "Layer 2 Interface" or "WAN service" ? |
Posted: 04 May 2014 12:32 AM PDT Dear fellow sufferers,
I am currently using the Reliance Thunder 1099 plan. I get frequent outages, and last month I requested termination. Retention team promised a lot and I decided to try it out for a little longer, and while outages were reduced somewhat, the service quality is far from satisfactory. For example, here are my current ping stats:
12 packets transmitted, 12 packets received, 0.0% packet loss round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 123.512/370.001/900.000/330.386 ms
Questions:
1. Are these normal, or is there some way to improve these? Whats the best way to reach someone who can help?
2. I'm sick of having to login everyday. With my previous BSNL connection, I had setup the BSNL modem in bridge mode and my Airport Extreme router in PPPoE, which worked very reliably. Is this possible with Reliance?
3. I'm currently based in Rajkot, Gujarat. Are there any other internet service providers I should consider, if I decide to switch?
Any help/advice is much appreciated! |
ACT Broadband - Application and Installation Experience Posted: 04 May 2014 12:25 AM PDT Hello Forum Members, I joined this forum to share my experience with ACT Broadband. I recently moved into my new apartment and prior to moving in I did a lot of research on the internet service providers in the area since I do a lot of work from home. Luckily I found out that ACT Broadband has coverage in my area and I called them up. On 2nd of November (Chota Diwali) there person came to collect the documents and payment at whichever time I specified. He very clearly said that since that was a Diwali weekend, my connection will get activated latest by Wednesday. He also mentioned that my apartment allready has a DP installed hence it would not be a problem at all. Now comes, 5th of October, Tuesday. I get a call early in the morning from the installation guy from ACT asking for my available time for the wiring. He was very prompt and punctual. It took a total of 15 mins to complete the wiring and he tested the connection and gave the demo. He also said that latest by 6th my connection will get activated and it did. I have not yet got a chance to test the full potential of the connection, however I can say one thing for sure, after reading multiple reviews in this forum, I was skeptical about the initial response of the company, but to my surprise, they were really well behaved and prompt in their response.
Total time it took for me to get the connection: 4 days Total calls made to ACT: 3 (including calling the sales guy)
I will post review about the speed and QOS later.
PS: I am on the 15 MBps / 40 GB plan.

Posted: 03 May 2014 10:43 PM PDT Another Tool/Gadget to finger my D.I.Y. Itch, and for those who know how it works, can easily save a couple of thousand a year.
Basic operation is, You can check TDS level twice a month, The least the reading is, purer the water is. my current reading is 21 after 1 year of usage. I am not spending 4.5k on contract this time.
New Filters and membrane installed would give readings, near 0(Zero) while normal home usage of 1 yr. should not be more than 15-25. and if you change the sediment filter in 6 months, your membrane would last twice its normal life of 1 yr as suggested by companies, but all that counts is the TDS Count, So watch and act.
new filter set would be around Rs.900 ( 3 filters) One Decent Filter membrane would be Rs.1200-1400 and companies charge 4K + for annual AMC so what they would cover extra is PUMP, and that's only Rs.1000 tops, so all in all even in worst case scenario (Blown Pump) you can save Rs.1000 and if pump doesn't needs to be replaced you save Rs.2000+ a year. other parts are considered as consumables and would be charged by AMC providers so its out of equation for D.I.Y. cost.
Last pic from phone cam before it went down for 2 days :-)
Bought Pocket Digital TDS Meter from this seller delivered a day earlier than ebay estimated time. Paid Rs.550/- after ebay discount coupon.
