No Audio Video from HDMI Intermittently

Posted: 19 Mar 2014 02:36 AM PDT

Last 2-3 days I facing issue with HDMI output from Airtel Digital TV HD STB. Intermittently there is no Audio Video from HDMI connection. TV (Sony) displays "No Signal". If I select component connection on TV, there Audio Video is received. After I restart STB, Audio Video will be coming through HDMI, but it may again lost after sometime.

Which LED TV is Best in LG/ Samsung/ Sony 32-inch section

Posted: 19 Mar 2014 01:26 AM PDT

Hi,

I am currently having Sony 32 inch Bravia HDTV (Not FULL HD), and it is very nice.

I want a 32" FULL HD, and i would prefer Sony only, but currently Sony not making any 32" FULL HDTV without Smart TV function (if they are,.. do suggest..but i am certain, as i called them to re-confirm)

Now here are the models i am looking into.

  1) Samsung  LED 32F5100    cost around 32k-34k

  2)  LG LED 32LN5400 (it has IPS panel)  same cost as above

  3) Toshiba 32PT200   around 26k to 29k

All above three models are FULL HD

I can go upto 35k, but for best panel quality. I do not want smart features.

I plan to buy Playstation 4 later, hence FULL HD is important.

Sony comes around 40k+ with smart features, which i am not gonna use, as all those features i can use with other gadgests which i already have.

All Sony TVs below that range without smart features are just HD , not FULL HD.

If anybody is having above models, please do share your experiences.

Huawei E303C not working with BSNL 3G SIM

Posted: 18 Mar 2014 11:05 PM PDT

When I use the BSNL 3G SIM on a Mobile phone, it works well.

But when I insert this SIM in a Huawei E303C datacard, it does not open any sites.  The Mobile Partner application registers to BSNL network and even the Connect button gives me a connection.  But I cannot use Internet.

I had a backup BSNL's own 3G datacard.  I tried using the BSNL 3G SIM on it and it works well.

Does this indiciate that the BSNL 3G SIM is blocked on other data cards?

Nextra Fiber Broadband Review

Posted: 18 Mar 2014 09:45 PM PDT

This is a short review of Nextra fiber to the home (ftth) broadband for anyone else wondering whether they should take the plunge.
I had earlier thought to wait for a week and then post but seeing how i had time on my hands and how stable and smooth everything is going I am doing it now, will post any negative developments here if they do occur.

Minimum speed offered is a fast 10mbps, i have subscribed to 10mbps 80GB FUP @ 1899 as going further up was mostly a waste for me with just 5 internet sharing devices, with most of the heavy lifting being done by the desktop.
An awesome difference from adsl is upload and download speeds are nearly the same..

Post FUP is a manageable 512kbps up and down...something i griped about a lot with airtel with its 256kbps.
A minor detail is that the fup data is calculated on a prorated basis-Even though i subscribed on the 30th, my billing cycle is 20/19 and the data in my balance was 53.xxGB and not 80 which was to be used till the 19th.
There would also probably be monthly fluctuation for the 30/31/28 days (unlike airtel with constant 80GB).

I was on airtel bb for the last 5 years with speeds progressing from 256kbps to 512 to 2mbps to the final 4mbps (when 8mbps suddenly became feasible for my area faced with competition from nextra) for the last month of its usage.
Airtel was much better than what i had been used to before, but with its own often deeply irritating flaws and crappy experiences. It will not be missed .

Installation

Fiber had already been installed upto my house leading upto an ericsson modem which has outputs to a lot of stuff, the society intercom being one of them.

Installation was just a matter of connecting the ethernet cable to my own WiFi router, registering this router's MAC with nextra (something that needs to be done again if you change your router), and setting the internet connection mode to DHCP.
The tech exec was quick to show up and the connection was up and running within 18 hours of document collection.

You immediately receive a password for the nextraworld website on your registered mobile number.

Initial Issues

Websites sometimes would fail to load and show up as a blank page instead, a deeply irritating issue which will scare you to make any sort of financial transactions with the connection (even though i know there are safeguards in place).
The exec was helpful enough to troubleshoot and gave an assurance it will be fixed within the day. Posted about this on another thread.

The issue seemed to originate with nextra's banner ad injection on webpages sometimes. It was being used to show the customer promotional offers and other information for the connection. Something that I did not like one bit.

Called up the cust care, the operator was quick to understand my problem and did not deny the practice or give any mindless reason like malware. Assured that it would be forwarded to the backend and be deactivated.

Sure enough I received a call from the backend from a well spoken exec and he confirmed my request for disabling this 'feature' a final time and that was the last I saw any injections or that issue of websites not loading.

It has been smooth sailing ever since.

General usage

Pings

I am not an online gamer, I am content with single player mode Dirt 3  so pings are not a very big issue for me.

They are better than airtel, unlike what i stated before in another thread when i hadn't tested so thoroughly.

Below are some comparative shots for a general idea-

Posted Image Posted Image

Posted Image Posted Image

Posted Image Posted Image

Posted Image Posted Image

Speeds

Speed is not very noticeable for lighter websites, though 1080p youtube now plays effortlessly and switches seamlessly to this mode and bitmeter reports full 10mbps when doing so. Something that is very important for me and that rarely happened with airtel.

A 1080p youtube screenshot with bitmeter graph.

Uploading is a similar story, dropbox uploads are speedy as well using nearly all of the bandwidth.
Torrents from IPT yield full speed of 1.1 to 1.2MBps which i use a lot for tv shows (I don't abide by copyright laws for them ).

Stability

The connection is stable as ever but can only comment on this after some time.
I have the modem and router hooked up to an APC home UPS i had lying around uselessly to avoid a disconnect in the time it takes for the society gensets to kick in.
However, I have yet to see its results, the airtel connection would not drop with this setup, not so sure about fiber.

Despite the earlier hiccups nextra did live up to my expectations. Airtel was very cooperative for a change for registering my disconnection request, and it would be done so within the week. Adios airtel.

Bottom line: I can never go back to adsl again!

Google Chromecast

Posted: 18 Mar 2014 09:18 PM PDT

Remember a few weeks back when we reported that Google was working on an ultra-affordable Chrome dongle for TVs or displays called the Chromekey? At the time, we thought Chromekey would be the device name and that you would be able to "CAST" (term used by our source) your Chrome browser from desktop or mobile Chrome browser to any display to have a bigger browsing experience. Well, according to Google Play support docs, that device appears to have been renamed to Chromecast.

Phone in 10k range

Posted: 18 Mar 2014 09:07 PM PDT

My first suggestion was to get the Moto G. But the person is not so tech-savvy, and wants some 4-5 options to choose from including atleast one Windows one. As other factors like looks may also make a difference (Even the OS feel). "Brand" is not a must but another one option in that category would be nice.

Budget is 10K. Maybe 1k more. Thats another reason why Moto G is sort of kept as "will be considered" than a sure shot by him.

Need help with config for All Round Performance PC

Posted: 18 Mar 2014 07:41 PM PDT

1. What is the purpose of the computer? What all applications and games are you going to run?

Ans:No gaming needs, some amount of Video and Image editing. HD Video and good quality music playback. Maybe a few Statistical Packages like Matlab, Mathematica, SAS, R etc.

2. What is your overall budget? If you can extend a bit for a more balanced configuration, then mention this too.
Ans: 35000 to 45000 excluding Monitor, Keyboard and Mouse. Would need a good UPS as well.

3. Planning to overclock?
Ans:Nope

4. Which Operating System are you planning to use?
Ans:Windows 7 64 bit /32 bit.

5. How much hard drive space is needed?
Ans:1 Tb. Would be willing to spend some additional amount on a SSD for OS and applications in addition to standard HDD

6. Do you want to buy a monitor? If yes, please mention which screen size and resolution do you want. If you already have a monitor and want to reuse it, again mention the size and resolution of monitor you have.
Ans:I have a Dell S2240L monitor

7. Which components you DON'T want to buy or which components you already have and plan on reusing?
Ans:Monitor, Keyboard and Mouse

8. When are you planning to buy the system?
Ans: Mid April

9. Have you ever built a desktop before or will this be done by an assembler?
Ans:Never built a Desktop before. Done some amount of hardware troubleshooting about 7-8 years backWould want to assemble by myself.

10. Where do you live? Are you buying locally? Are you open to buying stuff from online shops if you don't get locally?
Ans: Bangalore (S.P. Road). Open/prefer online buying provided pricing is right

11. Anything else which you would like to say?
Ans: If the stated budget is a constraint, I might be able to stretch it by 5-10k

Since my knowledge on current PC/computing technology can at best be rated POOR, what are the limitations and upsides of your recommended configuration?I would be really grateful if someone could take time out and help me understand this better.

What kind of upgrades/future proofing does this config provide me?

How important is a GPU for light/medium video/image editing?

HP Chromebook 14

Posted: 18 Mar 2014 10:59 AM PDT

So... Largely disappointed as expected. The resolution is too low for someone like me coming from a WQXGA display. Display tech is also quite poor in comparison to what I have on my (very f**ked up) Dell. I am not used to laptop keyboards so that would take a lot of time getting used to. Would have to reorganize my Chrome toolbar to fit all the icons in so little space available on that device :D And since the changes sync across all Chromes, I would have get the same compact edition on my desktop as well lol.

Anyways. It is still a laptop that comes with a 9 hour battery life. Which is what the focus is on. A backup machine to be used primarily during longer power cuts and travel. Would see if I can switch to it as my primary work machine as well. Would save a lot of power in the process. I can now get a Pogobox or a similar device for my torrent downloads and exclusively use the desktop for watching movies and TV shows!

I would eventually find out.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni Updates

Posted: 18 Mar 2014 10:33 AM PDT

New Delhi: The auctions for the Indian Premier League (IPL) have begun in the ballroom of the Oberoi Hilton in Mumbai.

The Chennai team paid the highest amount for Mahendra Singh Dhoni in the first round. Dhoni was bought for Rs 6 crore ($1.5 million) and he will be joined in the Chennai team by Sri Lanka’s spin whiz Muttiah Muralitharan who was bought for Rs 2.4 crore ($600,000).

Australian leg-spinner Shane Warne, who retired from international cricket early last year, was bought by Jaipur at Rs 1.8 crore ($4,50,000) while Adam Gilchrist was bought by Hyderbad for Rs 2.8 crore ($700,000)

Controversial Pakistani pace bowler Shoaib Akhtar will join Shah Rukh Khan’s Kolkata team for Rs 1.82 crore ($455,000).

The first round auctions saw the 'Marquee Players' being put up for sale. The Mumbai, Bangalore and Delhi teams did not take part in the first round.

A total of 78 players are up for grabs and they will be bought by eight franchises over the next 11 hours. Around Rs 160 crore ($40million) is at stake during the auctions.

But in a big blow to the IPL, Australia's Test and One-Day skipper Ricky Ponting, Andrew Symonds, Brett Lee and Michael Hussey will not be playing in the IPL in 2008 and hence they won't be auctioned.

Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid have already reached the for their team's bid

Each of the eight franchisees of the IPL will be allowed to spend a minimum of Rs 132 crore ($3.3 million) but not more than Rs 200 crore ($5 million) during the auctions.

Chennai bags Dhoni for Rs 6 cr, SRK wins Shoaib

I am very very happy that my company has got dhoni and more importantly dhoni will play for Chennai Team. I am delighted on this news. Come chennaites the first IPL tournamet will be ours. Cheer up chennaites.
