Good Performance, Low Noise, Non Gaming Desktop!

Posted: 16 Mar 2014 02:43 AM PDT

So... With all three HDDs failing, I guess it's time to plan for a new desktop instead of risking more hard disks failure.

My basic requirement is quite simple... Need a high performance machine. I do not game but I do have a 30" display that requires a Dual-DVI input for native resolution.
I currently have a quad core AMD processor with a CM fan. 8GB RAM. 3 HDDs (500GB, 1TB, 3TB). I would be sending in the drives still under warranty for replacements or whatever. From what I understand only the 3TB WD HDD is still under warranty.

So... What I am looking for here?

I would prefer a compact cabinet like I got for my uncle. But I am not sure if it is suitable for my needs. Need something that can survive for 3-4 years. Budget? Would prefer to spend less than 40K because anything above would be obscene for what I do with it.

I would try to recycle as many parts as possible but I do not see the point really. The internals in this box right now are at least 4 years old today except for the hard drives and RAM.

So... This is what I want...

High quality cabinet

High quality PSU

A motherboard with USB 3 ports

Mid-range processor

8GB RAM (I assume my existing sticks would work fine?)

1 SSD for OS with 1 large capacity drive for data (or 1 hybrid with 1 data drive)

A low-end or mid-range GFX card that can support the display and has a decent fan!

This is what I have right now:

Need Wi-Fi dongle for TV

Posted: 16 Mar 2014 02:30 AM PDT

One of my friend is looking for Wi-Fi dongle for his 32" Panasonic LCD TV which has WiFi enabled.

The purpose is to play movies/music from PC to TV via Router.

1) What would be the price?

2) All brands support Panasonic?

Central Bank of India Mobile banking App

Posted: 16 Mar 2014 02:29 AM PDT

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.spanco.cbi

So 3 people in my house including myself downloaded it. After several attempts and mess-ups only my Dad has been able to reach to a slightly working level.

The points of failure are

a)We first need to send an SMS to a number to get user ID - Success rate - About 30-40%

b)Login & change Mpin.

c)Next time login - Success rate - About 80%

d)Need to visit website to activate mobile banking

e)Grid card authentication for activation - Success rate - varies - so far only 1 of 3 people have crossed this level

@admin was complaining about imobile app. I invite him to use this app & give his opinion :pleasantry:

Another note, it has option of delivering data via GPRS or SMS. e.g. balance enquiry - you can either opt to see balance on screen or get an sms. It does mention there will be charge for SMS - not sure if they will charge or they mean operator may charge. So switched to GPRS after login.

Group B will include Zimbabwe, which will be joined by another three teams from the upcoming qualifiers. As such, the two groups will be finalised on November 30.

HD DTH

Posted: 16 Mar 2014 02:20 AM PDT

I basically don't watch Indian Television except for sports. My parents watch Tamil entertainment channels, Tamil and English news channels, sports.

So, my requirements are simple:

  • All possible/available tamil channels (SD; HD if available)
  • English news channels - NDTV 24x7, CNN-IBN, Times Now, Headlines Today, News X etc.
  • Sports HD channels - Star HD1, Star HD2, Sony Six HD, Ten HD
  • Sports SD channels won't hurt although I'm guessing all we want to see on Star/Ten/Sony will be available in the above 4 HD channels.

I browsed the sites of Airtel, Tata Sky, Dish TV, Sun DTH and Videocon. It's all confusing.

I'd appreciate inputs towards this purpose in terms of availability, costs, quality of transmission and service. Thanks.

Xolo Q800 X edition

I wanted a mobile under 10k and after searching, bought Xolo q800 X Edition. Already have seen Xolo A500S ,Xolo Q1100 with dad and hence decided to go to xolo again. Its not like there are many great phones under 10k. Wanted to buy Lumia 525 but again felt windows is too restrictive.

ACT Broadband, how they SUCK MONEY!

Posted: 16 Mar 2014 12:05 AM PDT

If i can relate one word with ACT BB, I would call them MONEY SUCKERS!

this is how my latest bill looks like

n8L9uAml.jpg

Yes, i have been charged for 2 months and if you are ACT BB customer, you will know how pathetic their customer care actually is, first you listen to all advertisements, wait in the queue for about 10 minutes and they you will speak to a person, who has no clue what he/she is talking about.

In my case, i was told that i have been charged twice because, YOUR PLAN has been changed from Post-Paid to Pre-Paid and YOU HAVE to pay 2 months and we are doing the same for ALL customers.

I asked them very simple questions

1. How did you take this decision unilaterally, without customer agreeing to it?
2. Why dint you inform me earlier about this?
3. If i have a dispute about this, why cant i pay for only one month? - Yes, you cannot pay for one month only, because ACT HAS TOOK THAT DECISION and you CANNOT challenge them - Damn almighty stuff, we are the GOD of BB.

As usual tech did not have an answer for the same, i asked for a call back and this morning i got a call from their escalations team
  • Person from ACT who called me was RUDE - that's still OK
  • He says he cannot revert this decision as it made by their Management and says on my face, YOU CAN DISCONNECT the connection if you want to. :nono: :pissed-off:
I thought ok, this sounds like good old - Airtel Broadband in their Initial Days! (NOW they have a far better Customer care, Constant connection and they respect their customers).

Just checked with Airtel, their SLOTS are filled in my Area and i cannot have a net connection as of now! :pissed-off: Struck with ACT BB!

And if you are someone NEW and looking for ACT Broadband, consider the below points

1. Act BB is good for downloading torrents - ONLY torrents
2. Most of the time, they have connection issues, If any existing ACT customer shows you their speed test connection, Ask them to perform similar tests for servers outside India, specially USA! you will know the difference. Or if you are an existing ACT BB customer, try playing videos in FB and you will know the difference or any of the video buffering sites.
3. You get a Ethernet cable directly from a box and if there is a power outage of more than 20+ minutes, you will not have internet, also if there is a Cable cut - You will not have internet connection for a week.
4. Report any technical issues for which a technician has to visit your place, you will have to followup more than 4 times (wait time more than 10 minutes)

Thinking of shifting from Airtel, need help with specifics

Posted: 15 Mar 2014 11:32 PM PDT

Hello guys, I am thinking about moving from Airtel to ACT since ACT has recently started rolling out in my area. Airtel is not bad, their support is pretty good, but their data caps are atrocious. I am grandfathered to a 150 GB plan which they have stopped, and the speed is not too high either (4 mbps).

The connection will be primarily be used for online gaming and heavy downloading from Steam. Anyone has any feedback pings to EU and Singapore servers in games like Dota 2 and CS GO? How about HD streams in Twitch and Yotutube? I will also probably cross the FUP every month, so I also need to know if their data tracking is accurate. Thanks!

ACT Broadband - Worst Broadband ever! Not reliable.

Posted: 15 Mar 2014 11:13 PM PDT

I'm from Bangalore and I've been using ACT Broadband for 5 months. ID 10712212

As the title says, it's the worst connection ever!!

Here are the issues I've observed so far:

  • Frequent disconnection (downtime for 10 to 15 minutes once every 2 days, sometimes it gets resolved in 5 minutes)
  • If you've have to login to portal to use the connection, do remember, the session will timeout after 24 hours. So whatever you are/were doing, will get disconnected 24 hours after your last login (This is a nightmare for me, since I play games and download stuffs.) I've tried to use so many plugins to somehow keep the session active, but all failed. So yeah, it's their servers that kick my session off after 24 hours and there is nothing I can do from my end unlike other websites and it's hard to keep track of last login time to get prepared for a disaster disconnection.
  • After 2 AM, there is a high chance for more packet loss. God knows why that happens.
  • I play more MOBA and FPS games and trust me, this connection is no good for gaming. You'll get disconnected every now and then or you'll lose some frames due to packet loss. I do have backup internet connection, which is Airtel 2 MBPS connection and it's 10 times better (reliable) than this 25 MBPS ACT broadband. Of course, when browsing website, you won't notice a difference since websites do wait few more seconds for your packets to arrive before timing out. But that's not the case with Gaming, Every packet loss counts and it drives you mad. I've tried to explain how gaming affects me (not as same as browsing, since we don't see much difference) to ACT customer care, but all they ask is, "Okay Sir can you try again browsing some other website?" WTF!
  • Also when watching movies, the movies need to be reloaded again, because this connection do lose some fragments on the way and never recover. So all the buffers is wasted and need to be buffered again. Yes I can agree, it has good speed and can load movies faster. But you'll lose more bandwidth since you'll have to reload it again. This happens to most of the websites like Viooz, putlocker etc., also this happens very rarely on youtube. I've tested watching movies on the viooz and putlocker sties using my Airtel 2 MBPS never had any issues.
  • Customer support is not 24/7 (Of course since they're new to the ISP world and might need some time to have 24/7 support, at least they could have Technical support 24/7 for God's sake) but if you lose your connection late night (which do happens all the time) you have nothing to do other than playing spider solitaire unless you have backup connection like me.
  • Also this is no connection is no good for some streaming sites, like twich.tv. But never had any issues so far with VOIP luckily.
  • Their DNS servers sucks.
  • When I called their customer service and asked them which WAN protocol they use, they put my call on hold, and then they said they use DHCP, LOL. Then I had to abbreviate WAN (Wide Area Network) and later they told me they use PPP. #Something for network engineers

I've been waiting for Google Fiber to available in Bangalore (I really hope it happens sooner) or at least Airtel comes up fiber broadband.

Can the fast internet be stored for future use?

Posted: 15 Mar 2014 10:59 PM PDT

I got myself an internet connection not too long ago. They allot 5GB, and then the speed reduces (Unlimited). I just wanted to know whether it's in the realm of possibilities to switch to slow version now and start using my 5GB later on, in the month?

Giveaway : JuiceSSH Pro SSH Client for Android

http://www.androidpolice.com/2014/03/15/juicessh-hits-500000-users-celebrates-by-giving-away-free-pro-pack-upgrades-until-march-18th/

We've just hit 500k users and are giving away our pro pack for free over the weekend. (Worth £6.98)

All the details here:

http://juicessh.com/500k

Background:
JuiceSSH is developed by myself and my brother, Paul. We were fed up with the out of date ConnectBot and decided to make something that we actually want to use during our day jobs. We wanted to make the best free SSH client for Android and we believe that without the upgrade, we've achieved that.
Our pro pack then extends that to add useful functionality like CloudSync which provides backups and syncing, backed with AES-256bit encryption, comparable to that hyped by mega.com.

We're not shy and would jump at any opportunity to share our little app with like minded people that may find it of use.

Thanks for reading,
Tom

CCI orders antitrust probe against IRCTC

Posted: 15 Mar 2014 02:59 PM PDT

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has ordered an antitrust probe against Indian Railways and The Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) for alleged unfair trade practices by IRCTC while providing online train ticketing and others services.

As per the CCI order, Railways is allegedly restricting technical and scientific developments related to booking of e-tickets using IRCTC and is imposing unreasonable conditions on its recently launched e-wallet scheme. It is also levying premium charges for calls made to 139 and limiting the provisions of IRCTC authorized agent services.

Other complaints from the order

- Tickets booked online doesn't permit any concessions except for senior citizens and doesn't allow users to reserve tickets with break journeys. Users are apparently permitted to book only 10 tickets per month

- IRCTC charges a premium on the e-ticket pricing on top of which it charges a non-refundable service charge and payment gateway charges. There is also a extra agent service charge if ticket is booked through an IRCTC authorized agents.

- Huge amount of Tatkal tickets are hoarded and sold at a huge premium of Rs 400 over the normal price. These bookings start only one day in advance thereby creating artificial scarcity and illegal practices by touts and agents.

- Limiting the availability of IRCTC agents by charging high fees for agent appointments. IRCTC currently charges a one-time fee of Rs 20,000 and an annual fee of Rs 5,000, which apparently acts a barrier for smaller agents.

Hi ,

I am a loyal BSNL customer so far . But now-a-days , they seem to be more keen on raking up moolah than enhancing customer services.

So , I have decided to bid good bye to BSNL and opt for cable broadband . My local cable operator is offering WishNet . Is it good ? I have heard about Allience ... it is good. but , how is WishNet ?

Posted: 15 Mar 2014 08:23 AM PDT

Connection in Chikkalasandra, Naidu Layout, Bangalore-61

Posted: 15 Mar 2014 08:21 AM PDT

Hi, I reside in Chikkalasandra, Naidu Layout, Bangalore-560061. Does ACT serve to this area?. If yes then how early can I get a connection.

Speed/Connectivity issue.

Posted: 15 Mar 2014 08:14 AM PDT

I've been on MTNL since 2007. Lots of ups and down since then but mostly it works fine for my all move movie downloads from torrent, porn streamed fine and FIFA is also fine but very laggy at times not totally satisified there (playing since 09) but then also I blame EAsports there.

Anyways the issue is since last 2-3 weeks my speed test shows around 1.31 mbps max and earlier I was always 1.8 on mtnl website aswell as speedtest.net.

Even with that speed things should work fine right? but no I disconnect from online gaming and when it works its evry laggy. Porn takes forever to stream and surfing isnt the same anymore. Its like there is a constant break somewhere not the adsl shit that usually happens.Torrent download works fine.

I try to call them from my mobile on  but the line never gets connected and when it does a fat lady dies having an orgasm

I don't have unlimited balance you know.

So I decided to kill the laziness and reach out for the mtnl phone on the other side of the bed only to find out the phone isnt working anymore the line works not the phone as in handset or whatever.

I thought why not use the internet without the phone because i dont use the phone to call ever so I took the wire out from the splitter and connected to the modem directly..

Does that mean the reduction in speed is due to no use of the phone box.? m using the cat 6 cable whichis the best I guess from the pole to my house.

I tried complaining online and the complaint is sorted out there without even a single soul in my house knowing about it.

I can write forever about mtnl I guess. I called nextra last sunday which isnt even installed yet I'll post about it in that nextra category.

Anyways give your helpful views on this guys.

Which LED TV is Best in LG/ Samsung/ Sony 32-inch section

Posted: 15 Mar 2014 03:04 AM PDT

Hi,

I am currently having Sony 32 inch Bravia HDTV (Not FULL HD), and it is very nice.

I want a 32" FULL HD, and i would prefer Sony only, but currently Sony not making any 32" FULL HDTV without Smart TV function (if they are,.. do suggest..but i am certain, as i called them to re-confirm)

Now here are the models i am looking into.

  1) Samsung  LED 32F5100    cost around 32k-34k

  2)  LG LED 32LN5400 (it has IPS panel)  same cost as above

  3) Toshiba 32PT200   around 26k to 29k

All above three models are FULL HD

I can go upto 35k, but for best panel quality. I do not want smart features.

I plan to buy Playstation 4 later, hence FULL HD is important.

Sony comes around 40k+ with smart features, which i am not gonna use, as all those features i can use with other gadgests which i already have.

All Sony TVs below that range without smart features are just HD , not FULL HD.

If anybody is having above models, please do share your experiences.
