Tikona Broadband User Experiences

Posted: 24 Jan 2014 02:55 AM PST

Thought I would start another thread for people who have actually used this service to describe their experience.

They have started advertising quite heavily in Bombay and their plans seem pretty decent. Their 600kbps UL plan would be excellent for me.

I really like the way they have bill limits for their limited plans as well. That shows they understand consumer concerns about enormous bills and have designed their plans to allay them.

So how good is their service? Any down time? How quickly do they respond to complaints? Really any information from people who have used Tikona would be appreciated.

Apparently the gamepad accessory for the Galaxy S4 support devices as large as 6.3 inches. So, the rumor in the market is that Note3 might feature a display as large. lol.

I think they should have added support for 8" devices so that the recently launched Note 8.0 would have worked with this!

GMO foods to be avoided

Posted: 24 Jan 2014 02:16 AM PST

In the United States, 70 percent or more of the foods in your supermarket directly or indirectly contain genetically modified (GM) ingredients. The illustration below shows how prevalent GM foods have become on grocery store shelves.

The only way to avoid GM food is to know which ingredients are likely to be genetically modified and read labels carefully, or to always choose organic foods, which are certified GM-free.

Below are estimates of the percentages of GM foods found on store shelves. To learn more about this issue, see The Threats From Genetically Modified Foods.

GM Foods Chart

Dairy/Eggs. Unless it's labeled organic or rBST-free, everything in the dairy case, including milk, cheese and yogurt, probably contains milk from cows injected with rBST, a GM hormone used to make cows give more milk. It's also likely that the cows and chickens were fed GM corn, soy and canola.

Meat. GM corn and soy are so dominant in the United States that almost everything in the meat case comes from animals fed GM crops.

Fresh Produce. Not many GM items yet, but GM sweet corn arrived in 2012.

Cereals. Unless labeled as organic, cereals probably include GM ingredients, primarily high-fructose corn syrup and other corn products, soy and milk proteins. Don't be fooled by "natural" labels; they mean nothing.

Cookies/Snacks/Chips. Almost all include high-fructose corn syrup; soy, corn or canola oil; soy lecithin and other soy isolates; or other additives derived from GM corn and soy.

Pasta/Rice/Beans. You're pretty safe here, because wheat, rice and beans are not (yet) genetically modified, but watch out for the heat-and-eat pasta meals that include GM ingredients.

Ice Cream/Frozen Prepared Meals. Unless labeled organic, these are virtually guaranteed to have GM ingredients, including corn and soy products, whey protein from rBST milk, and GM beet sugar.

Oils/Fats/Shortening. Olive oil is non-GM. "Vegetable oil" usually is GM, as are corn, soybean and canola oil. Solid shortenings are hydrogenated canola, corn and soybean oil.

Condiments/Prepared Foods. All of these items contain GM soy, corn and/or canola unless labeled organic.

Bread/Crackers. Almost all commercial bread is made with corn syrup and soy-based ingredients.

MS staff

There was a pilot flying a small single engine charter plane, with a couple of very important executives on board. He was coming into Seattle airport through thick fog with less than 10m visibility when his instruments went out. So he began circling around looking for landmark. After an hour or so, he starts running pretty low on fuel and the passengers are getting very nervous. Finally, a small opening in the fog appears and he sees a tall building with one guy working alone on the fifth floor. The pilot banks the plane around, rolls down the window and shouts to the guy "Hey! Where am I?" To this, the solitary office worker replies "You're in a plane." The pilot rolls up the window, executes a 275 degree turn and proceeds to execute a perfect blind landing on the runway of the airport 5 miles away. Just as the plane stops, so does the engine as the fuel has run out.

The passengers are amazed and one asks how he did it. "Simple" replies the pilot, "I asked the guy in that building a simple question. The answer he gave me was 100 percent correct but absolutely useless, therefore that must be Microsoft's support office and from there the airport is just a while away."

Is Windows a virus?

No, Windows is not a virus. Here's what viruses do:
They replicate quickly Okay, Windows does that

Viruses use up valuable system resources, slowing down the system as they do so okay, Windows does that

Viruses will, from time to time, trash your hard disk Okay, Windows does that, too

Viruses are usually carried, unknown to the user, along with valuable programs and systems Sigh... Windows does that, too

Viruses will occasionally make the user suspect their system is too slow (see 2) and the user will buy new hardware Yup, that's with Windows, too

Until now it seems Windows is a virus but there are fundamental differences: Viruses are well supported by their authors, are running on most systems, their program code is fast, compact and efficient and they tend to become more sophisticated as they mature

So, Windows is *not* a virus

Delhi Chief Minister would be under purview of AAP's version of the Jan Lokapal Bill

Posted: 24 Jan 2014 01:02 AM PST

Jan Lokpal Bill almost ready, CM office in purview: Arvind Kejriwal - The Economic Times

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal today said that his office has been kept under the purview of Jan Lokpal Bill, whose broad contours have been finalised, and will be taken up in the cabinet early next week.
"The Chief Minister office will be under the Jan Lokapal Bill," Kejriwal told reporters here after emerging from a high level meeting of the bill drafting committee and the government's senior officials.
A senior official said the meeting was chaired by Kejriwal to discuss the fine prints of the bill. He added that the bill was almost ready and within a couple of days all the work related to it would be completed.

Now we are getting close to a point where Congress might rethink their one-way support to AAP. lol.

M.K. Alagiri suspended from DMK

Posted: 24 Jan 2014 12:21 AM PST

I am not knowledgeable about South Indian politics but this looks like a big thing.

DMK suspends Alagiri from party - Livemint

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party on Friday announced that it has suspended M.K. Alagiri, former Union minister and elder son of party chief M. Karunanidhi.
"As disciplinary action for providing strong opinions against the party leading to a confusion within the party, as it will cause further disruption, Alagiri has been suspended for a short time," it said in a statement.
On 5 January, DMK disbanded its Madurai unit headed by Alagiri, stating that it was not maintaining discipline and disobeying the orders of Karunanidhi.
Two weeks ago, Karunanidhi had warned Alagiri of expulsion if he did not toe the DMK party line on political alliances.

I imagine this is similar to Congress suspending Rahul Gandhi? :D

Jabong Co-Founder Manu Jain Quits. To start new venture.

Posted: 23 Jan 2014 11:20 PM PST

I guess we could soon see the launch of Rebong.

Jabong co-founder quits to launch own venture — www.financialexpress.com

Just after two years of launch, Manu Jain, one of Jabong's co-founders, has parted ways to start his own online venture through a partnership. The Gurgaon-based portal, which follows both marketplace and inventory models, was founded in January 2012, much after some of the other online retailers had come into play. It was co-founded by Arun Chandra Mohan, Praveen Sinha and Lakshmi Potluri and later Jain joined as co-founder and managing director.

On Wednesday, Jabong.com confirmed the development, stating that Jain left the company last week to start his own venture. Jain could not be reached over phone. Jain had already met with venture capitalists in this regard. Details of his plan are expected to be revealed next month.

Jain, a 32-year-old IIT-Delhi graduate, had told FE three months back that he believes his best phase is yet to arrive. He has worked previously with McKinsey & Co for five years, which he said he did for imbibing the benefits of a process-driven environment and carefully evaluating business opportunities before taking the plunge to become an entrepreneur.

Microsoft acquiring Nokia (Devices and Services Divisions)

Posted: 23 Jan 2014 10:48 PM PST

Confirmed now.

Nokia Corporation today announced that it has signed an agreement to enter into a transaction whereby Nokia will sell substantially all of its Devices & Services business and licence its patents to Microsoft for EUR 5.44 billion in cash, payable at closing. Nokia expects to book a gain on sale of approximately EUR 3.2 billion, and expects the transaction to be significantly accretive to earnings.

Subject to the closing of the transaction, Microsoft will acquire substantially all of Nokia's Devices & Services business, including the Mobile Phones and Smart Devices business units as well as an industry-leading design team, operations including all Nokia Devices & Services production facilities, Devices & Services-related sales and marketing activities, and related support functions. At closing, approximately 32,000 people are expected to transfer to Microsoft, including approximately 4,700 people in Finland. Nokia's CTO (Chief Technology Office) organization and patent portfolio will remain within the Nokia Group. The operations that are planned to be transferred to Microsoft generated an estimated EUR 14.9 billion, or almost 50%, of Nokia's net sales for the full year 2012.

Additionally, Microsoft will become a strategic licensee of the HERE platform, and will separately pay Nokia for a four year license. This revenue stream is expected to substantially replace the revenue stream HERE is currently receiving from Nokia's Devices & Services business internally. If the transaction closes Microsoft is expected to become one of the top three customers of HERE.

Based on Frank Miller's latest graphic novel Xerxes, and told in the breathtaking visual style of the blockbuster "300," this new chapter of the epic saga takes the action to a fresh battlefield—on the sea—as Greek general Themistokles attempts to unite all of Greece by leading the charge that will change the course of the war.
