Lawful Intercept and Monitoring Systems already in place?

Amid fresh controversy following reports of the U.S.'s Prism programme targeting the Brazilian President, and the impending launch of the Indian government's own Central Monitoring System (CMS) project, an investigation by The Hindu reveals that the Internet activities of India's roughly 160 million users are already being subjected to wide-ranging surveillance and monitoring, much of which is in violation of the government's own rules and notifications for ensuring "privacy of communications".

While the CMS is in early stages of launch, investigation shows that there already exists — without much public knowledge — Lawful Intercept and Monitoring (LIM) systems, which have been deployed by the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DoT) for monitoring Internet traffic, emails, web-browsing, Skype and any other Internet activity of Indian users.

Compact Desktop with Optical Drive

Posted: 19 Nov 2013 10:41 PM PST

OS would be nice. Not necessary.

Just need the CPU part as it would replace a nearly 10-15 year old machine at Fufaji's place.

Requirements are just basic. The current machine is probably a first or second generation Pentium running Windows XP :o so anything is an upgrade.

I personally plan to install Ubuntu as the requirement is basically to browse the web, download and print PDF files, open documents and files from CDs.

I could get something made from my local hardware guy. But considering getting a branded machine because of simple needs. Super compact cabinet would be nice.

Checked out Dell India website. Even the crappy configurations are priced at around 35K (including LCD etc). I am guessing I would have to get a custom unit? :\

Microsoft acquiring Nokia (Devices and Services Divisions)

Posted: 19 Nov 2013 10:27 PM PST

Confirmed now.

Nokia Corporation today announced that it has signed an agreement to enter into a transaction whereby Nokia will sell substantially all of its Devices & Services business and licence its patents to Microsoft for EUR 5.44 billion in cash, payable at closing. Nokia expects to book a gain on sale of approximately EUR 3.2 billion, and expects the transaction to be significantly accretive to earnings.

Subject to the closing of the transaction, Microsoft will acquire substantially all of Nokia's Devices & Services business, including the Mobile Phones and Smart Devices business units as well as an industry-leading design team, operations including all Nokia Devices & Services production facilities, Devices & Services-related sales and marketing activities, and related support functions. At closing, approximately 32,000 people are expected to transfer to Microsoft, including approximately 4,700 people in Finland. Nokia's CTO (Chief Technology Office) organization and patent portfolio will remain within the Nokia Group. The operations that are planned to be transferred to Microsoft generated an estimated EUR 14.9 billion, or almost 50%, of Nokia's net sales for the full year 2012.

Additionally, Microsoft will become a strategic licensee of the HERE platform, and will separately pay Nokia for a four year license. This revenue stream is expected to substantially replace the revenue stream HERE is currently receiving from Nokia's Devices & Services business internally. If the transaction closes Microsoft is expected to become one of the top three customers of HERE.

Gigabit Router + Modem

Posted: 19 Nov 2013 10:08 PM PST

I'm planning to get a Gigabit Router and modem for my MTNL connection wanted to keep the modem and router seperate to avoid any disconnection so took this route , I'm looked around and since my love for Asus Router is on higher side i see Asus RT N15U and Asus RT N16U , and it seems RT15U is nothing but N13U with gigabit and great looks only concern for me being the vertical stand and connection LAN cables to it.RT N16 have DD WRT router but it seems a quite a old router now but still kicking ass against the older model , also there is TP Link WDR 4300 750 which i dont have much info on

For modem i see TP Link 8817 , DLink DSL-2520U or something else should i look for multiple Ethernet port in modem or just 1 would be ok ?

What The Fish

Sudha Mishra is a divorced and grumpy woman has just come back to her home in Vasant Kunj, New Delhi. While she was away, Sumit, her niece's fiance was given the responsibility to take care of the house and was clearly instructed to feed the fish and water the plants. At the end of the holiday when Sudha reaches her quaint house and starts its inspection with detective accuracy. Everything seems to be in order but is it? Sumit threw a helluva party for all his friends at Sudha's house, broke all the house rules and also handed it over to the most nefarious characters!

Information about Honesty Net Solutions

Posted: 19 Nov 2013 08:08 PM PST

I wanted to opt for either fivenet or 1&1. Both are unavailable in my area. Now, local cablewala provides Honesty. And, he quoted unlimited 2Mbps plan for 1599 rs/ month, and 15000 rs/ annum.  I liked the plan of 4Mbps @Rs. 1100, for 50GB, it is a prepaid plan inclusive of taxes.I dont know the tariffs of Honesty, it is not given on their website as well. if you could tell what the tariffs are or how to contact honesty, if I want to try to get connection directly from them, if they do so?

Need latest hardware - Wired Modem Only

Posted: 19 Nov 2013 08:05 PM PST

I have BSNL 8Mbps plan. With my old 2008 Beetel Modem, i am getting a speed of about 4.6 Mbps or so. But when I borrowed a newer 2011 Beetel 450TC1 Modem Router from my friend to see if it helps, the speed went up to ~6.2 Mbps. I would like suggestions of people here on a good Modem. I have multiple Wireless Routers, so dont need a Modem Router. Another thing is with a Modem router, i've had port forwarding issues to access my home content from the outside - e.g. security cam, NAS etc. Please suggest me a good ADSL 2+ modem. If you are aware of a good model from the US, I can source that too.

I did look at some models and find TP-Link 8816 / TP-Link 8817 and DLink 2520U as some of the newer ones. I would personally prefer Linksys or Netgear, but cannot find just modems in these brands.

Huawei MT882 router boot problems

Posted: 19 Nov 2013 07:54 PM PST

Hi,

I have a Huawei MT882 ADSL+ router and a linksys WRT54G. I have a bridged connection. From past few days, the router has a weird problem. The connection drops suddenly and the router is in initialization state, i.e the power led is greed, the ADSL link led is orange and the LAN led does not turn on even when connected to linksys router through LAN cable (linksys is powered on). But the USB led is turned on. After several power switch on and offs, the LAN led turns to orange and the link LED blinks and stays steadily green. When the router is in this state, I can login to the configuration page.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanking You

Satish
