Remember a few weeks back when we reported that Google was working on an ultra-affordable Chrome dongle for TVs or displays called the Chromekey? At the time, we thought Chromekey would be the device name and that you would be able to "CAST" (term used by our source) your Chrome browser from desktop or mobile Chrome browser to any display to have a bigger browsing experience. Well, according to Google Play support docs, that device appears to have been renamed to Chromecast.

hathway not providing high and data usage and charging more in mumbai

Posted: 03 Oct 2013 02:18 AM PDT

hathway provides 15 mbps connection in banglore or hyderabad for almost the same price for which it provides only a 5 mbps connection in mumbai. Even the data usage is almost double. why this partiality then? Even we pay the price then why they are enjoying the benefit of 15 mbps + higher fup and we here are left back with only 5 mbps. hathway should bring up higher speeds in mumbai too. Or else hathway is cheating the mumbai customers by taking almost the same price and providing 10 mbps less than thebanglore and hyderabad customers and that too with half the fup. I am one such frustated customer with a 5 mbps hathway plan and i cant even switchto other Isp as the local cable provider has a monopoly in my area   and they have a tie up with hathway. so they only provide hathway inn my area   :nonchalance:   :offended:   :poop:

Had no idea that Indian media was a key institution of democracy

Posted: 03 Oct 2013 02:16 AM PDT

The Broadcast Editors' Association finds Gujarat Chief Minister Mr Narendra Modi's statement against Indian media at a public rally in New Delhi today as objectionable. The BEA believes that such statement aims at demeaning Indian media, which is a key institution of democracy.

The Broadcast Editors' Association is disturbed at the attempt to project Indian media team visiting the UN in a poor light. Mr Narendra Modi's statement has been made without knowing the full facts of the matter and without realizing the dignified role media is expected to play at international fora.

The BEA would like to assure all that Indian media understands its responsibility and also it's code of conduct.

American Government is shutting down :P

Posted: 03 Oct 2013 02:11 AM PDT

http://www.readability.com/articles/r7vyfqbz

A flurry of last-minute moves by the House, Senate and White House late Monday failed to break a bitter budget standoff over President Obama's health care law, setting in motion the first government shutdown in nearly two decades.

After a series of rapid-fire back and forth legislative maneuvers, leaders of the House and Senate acknowledged there would not be a resolution in time to stop a shutdown before a midnight deadline, even as the House took steps to open talks. But Harry Reid, the Senate majority leader, dismissed as game-playing the House proposal to begin conference committee negotiations.

"We will not go to conference with a gun to our heads," he said, demanding that the House accept the Senate's six-week stopgap spending bill, which has no policy prescriptions, before negotiations begin.

The impasse meant that 800,000 federal workers were to be furloughed and more than a million others would be asked to work without pay. The Office of Management and Budget issued orders that "agencies should now execute plans for an orderly shutdown due to the absence of appropriations" because Congress had failed to act.

It is a remake of the successful 1960s television series Ironside.

The pilot was written by Michael Caleo, who also executive produces, while Universal TV, David Entertainment and Yellow Brick Road will produce the show.

According to various news outlets, the plot of the show will revolve around "A tough, sexy but acerbic police detective relegated to a wheelchair after a shooting is hardly limited by his disability as he pushes and prods his hand-picked team to solve the most difficult cases in the city."

One of my best TV series of all time becoming desi!

Colors, Anil Kapoor ink deal to broadcast '24' in India > afaqs! news & features

Anil kapoor, please do some justice with Jack Bauer.

I also read something about cast: Chunky Pandey is in it :D

As for the cast and crew, Kapoor has promised the channel that there will be no known names on the show. However, word is that Ronit Roy, Atul Kulkarni, Chunky Pandey and Vidyut Jamwar will essay some of the lead roles. And, as we already know, Kapoor will play the main protagonist, anti-terror squad leader Jack Bauer, essayed by his favourite actor Keifer Sutherland in the original version. What's more? Abhinao Deo of Delhi Belly fame will direct the show. One wonders though, who will play the middle-eastern leader Omar Hassan, the role bagged by Kapoor in the American series...

We see a remarkable tale unfold. From attempting to become a terrorist to being wrongly imprisoned under the anti-terrorism law to becoming a lawyer, a champion of human rights (particularly the Muslim minorities in India), "Shahid" traces the inspiring personal journey of a boy while following the rise of communal violence in India. The story of an impoverished Muslim struggling to come to terms with injustice, inequality and rising above his circumstances is an inspiring testament to the human spirit.

Airtel HD+ - Query on using existing hard drive partition

Posted: 02 Oct 2013 11:58 PM PDT

Hello Techie folks,

Yesterday, I upgraded to Airtel HD+, which allows us to connect to an external usb storage and record programs.

I have a query that I am hoping to get a resolution on this forum.

I have a 1 TB USB external hard drive which is partioned into 4 drives of roughly 250gb each. I plan to use one partition for HD+ STB. However, as soon as I plug in my hard drive to STB and switch it ON, it asks me to 1) Format drive 2) Go back.

I cannot format the drive, because it carries useful data and run beyond 600 gigs, which I cannot back-up somewhere else, even temporararily. I can't just lose the data (believe me, they are not movies).

I just wish that the STB should prompt me with the drive name, once I select it to format. But, I cannot try this, because, if it doesn't prompts me and formats the entire 1 TB drive, I'll be in soup.

So, if any of you have tried to connect a partitioned hard drive to HD+ STB, could you please share your experience?

Is there any way out?

Thanks in advance.

Feedback on Smartlink broadband [Mumbai]

Posted: 02 Oct 2013 11:07 PM PDT

Hello everyone!

a friend of mine lives at Bhandup, Mumbai. he was in search of an ISP, when he came to know of the name in subject. the name was new for me too, hence did a google search. couldn't find much, except some mixed feedback on justdial (can't say for sure about authenticity of the feedback there). the ISP is based in Powai, and is a cable net provider. they have attractive plans (unltd), esp. the newly introduced 4 mbps unltd plan in just 1000/-. sounds too good to be true (and hence seems dubious)!

could anyone having any experience with them please provide some suggestions?

thanks!

Is MTNL really offering FTTH or is it FTTC ?

Posted: 02 Oct 2013 10:42 PM PDT

Hello

i live in Thane and had registered somw months ago for FTTH after seeing ad in papers. after several months i git a call from local mtnl exchange that they want to come home to install . what they actually did was to set up a normal tel line from some box outside the building cliaiming this was the FTTh cable and next day they connected a modem (without wifi) ARGT 1000 from Alphion Coporation and left. As i was traveling on the days they came, only my wife was at home and these guys told her that everything is set up and they tested speed and it is 5 mbps.  when i returned from my tour, i was surprised to see a normal tel line connected to the modem and the speed was just about 50 kbps !! I lodged a compliant and next day the technician came (again when i was not at home) and did something and left. that day i got a speed of 400 kbps but since then the connection stopped working. the "internet" light on the modem come on. I lodged complaint again and even sopke to the officer in Prabhadevi exchange but no remedy so far. they dont seem to know anything.

question is:

any of you have similar experience ? what was your connection (did they put the ONT in your home) or just a tel line /

what type of modem/router  did you get and what speeds are you able to get?

did they give a wifi router or non wifi ?

i did some internet search and could not find anything (not one single hit) about this ARGT-1000 router !

from what i read on internet this type of connection is called Fibre to the cabinet (FTTC) - running fibre optic cables from the telephone exchange or distribution point to the street cabinets which then connect to a standard phone line to provide broadband. is mtnl really giving FTTH or only FTTC ?

what type of modem is the correct one ? i believe the normal ADSL modems will not work with FTTH/FTTc and we have to go for VDSL modems - is this true ? if so which are good VDSL modems ?

any feedback/comments appreciated

Rate applicable post data transfer quota

Posted: 02 Oct 2013 09:50 PM PDT

Please tell me what this Rate applicable post data transfer quota is?

I want to know about an Airtel plan, ROTN Max 175 GB which is 2 Mbps for 175 GB and 256 kbps with Rate applicable post data transfer quota of 60 ps/min

What is this rate applicable post data transfer quota? it says 60 ps/min? Yes, its says 60 ps/min and not 60ps/mb.

Does this mean that after the monthly data quota is over you will be charged 60 ps/min despite bandwidth speed being lowered to 256kbps ?

Another Question :-

Hello. I have an Airtel Broadband plan Max 175 GB. 2 Mbps for 175 GB and then it goes to 256 kbps post that with Rate applicable post data transfer quota as Nil. I only upgraded to that plan a few months ago.

But when i checked the Airtel broadband tariff section the plan (Max 175 GB) i am using is no longer there and instead they have a new plan (ROTN Max 175 GB) which is almost the same, same price, same data limit, same everything except that it has the Rate applicable post data transfer quota of 60 ps/min.

Does this mean that i will be automatically be changed to that plan? I don't want to change to that plan, i want to keep my old plan. Can Airtel forcefully change me to that plan since the old one was discontinued.

What is ROTN ?

Please help me.

Five-year FIA cost-culling plan revealed
15/10/08

A British newspaper has revealed the FIA's five-year plan to radically slash costs, with the body's president arguing Formula One has become 'unsustainable'.

The centrepiece of the package, to be discussed with the F1 teams' alliance FOTA next week in Geneva, is the standardisation of expensive car parts that add little to the show.

The London publication The Times claims that Bernie Ecclestone, the Chief Executive of F1's commercial rights holder, backs the Max Mosley-devised plan to 'dramatically' cut costs.

Among the measures is the introduction of a controversial standard engine design for 2010, additional energy recovery systems and fuel-efficient engines for 2013, and many 'common parts' for the chassis.

"We are completely open to new ideas," Mosley, albeit insisting that engines must be made available to small teams at a low cost, said in a letter to the team bosses.

An FIA spokesman said he will not comment prior to the meeting.

RBR signs Vettel for 2009

Thursday, 17 July 2008 13:21

Red Bull Racing has confirmed that it has signed Sebastian Vettel to partner Mark Webber in its 2009 driver line-up.
A vacancy opened up at the Milton Keynes-based squad following David Coulthard's decision to retire at the end of this season, and Vettel has been widely tipped for promotion from Red Bull's 'B' team Toro Rosso.
However there has also been speculation that RBR was trying to entice double world champion Fernando Alonso away from Renault, but the Spaniard remains non-committal about his plans for next year and has been linked to a move to Ferrari in 2010.
Team principal Christian Horner said he was confident that, despite Vettel's youth and relative inexperience, the 21-year-old German was the right choice.
"We are delighted that Sebastian will be joining us next year," said Horner.
"With David Coulthard announcing his retirement as a Formula 1 driver a fortnight ago at the British Grand Prix, after careful consideration, it seemed natural to announce his replacement here at Sebastian's home race in Hockenheim.
"As he was already part of the Red Bull family, choosing Sebastian as Mark Webber's team-mate was not a difficult decision.
