Airtel Noida - Frequent Disconnections and Reconnects

Posted: 09 Sep 2013 02:31 AM PDT

Hi Folks,

I have an airtel 2Mbps connection in Noida. For the past 2-3 days, I am getting lot of connection drops. The DSL and Internet LEDs go off on my router and then reconnect. This is happening every 5 minutes.

I had similar problem last month and that time an Airtel Engineer came and replaced the RJ-11 cable going from Splitter to the Modem. He said the old cable had carbon deposits on the contacts, so it was causing frequent disconnections. But the reonnection issues had stopped even before the engineer came that time.

Now that the isse has come back again, I think its a problem with the backend and not anything to do with my wiring or Modem.

Here is a view of my connection status. I think the SNR numbers are a bit off. Can anyone knowledgable tell me if anything is wrong with this status?

Request to @airtel_presence to provide an option to disable SmartBytes redirections

Posted: 09 Sep 2013 02:30 AM PDT

Starting a thread for you to retweet to appeal to Airtel Broadband to provide an option to disable random redirections to SmartBytes page.

Reasons?

1. Almost all users who are getting randomly redirected would probably know about SmartBytes and would do it manually if they are interested in getting a SmartBytes package. Airtel already sends an email when the user crosses 80% and 100% of his usage, that is the proper place to promote this 'scam'.
2. Random redirections are bad for the end user as it breaks the flow of browsing. It can result in data loss for users who are trying to post a comment on a blog or forum. It can lead to incomplete online transactions which can result in major headaches for the user paying for a product or service online.

Sony Playstation Vita

Posted: 09 Sep 2013 01:47 AM PDT

They launched a new version?

Looks like it!

Sony has announced a new version of its PS Vita, just weeks after announcing a price-drop across both the US and Europe. (Japan was treated to the discount back in February.) It's 15 percent lighter and 20 percent thinner than the original model and will add an additional hour of life to the battery. The new (WiFi-only) Vita will land in Japan first, on October 10th priced at 18,980 yen (about $190). Other hardware improvements (alongside pink, black, blue, grey, lime green, and yellow color options) include a micro-USB charger -- like your smartphone -- and 1GB of onboard storage. Interestingly, the screen tech has been changed to LCD from OLED, but we'll have to see it in the flesh before we jump to any conclusions on performance.

Display has been downgraded from OLED to LCD lol.

New Connection Query

Posted: 09 Sep 2013 01:47 AM PDT

I'm going to apply for new connection + broadband and bsnl is asking for rs.1100 as security deposit (600 as advanced bill + 500 as telephone security )

Do I really need to give telephone security if I am opting for combo plan?

Apart from that what are all installation charges that I can avoid by doing myself ??

AirAsia India: Tata gets permission to launch new budget airline in India!

Posted: 08 Sep 2013 11:43 PM PDT

Malaysia's AirAsia, the largest budget carrier in Asia, plans to launch a regional airline in India. The new airline, AirAsia India, will be managed by the Malaysian company and based in Chennai.

I am looking forward to the launch. We need a company with deep pockets and loads of experience to compete against these fairly new guys. Someone who is mature to handle things properly like Tata... Should be interesting. Indian government has prevented Tata from launching an airline company for decades now. Surprising he got the nod this time around.

Bharti Airtel to charge less for additional broadband usage - The Economic Times

Myntra: Brand to brand conversion tool

Posted: 08 Sep 2013 11:17 PM PDT

Ever wondered about why 'X' Jeans size 32 is looser than 'Y' Jeans size 32? While shopping online, this is a big constrain for the customers to pick the perfect fit.

Myntra.com has come out with a solution! Their Brand to brand conversion tool helps the customers to pick their ideal fit. The customer need to go to any product's detail page and click on "Not Sure of your Size",  click on the tab: "Find My Size". Further they can enter the brand and the size that fits them well. The tool will then come up with the best fit size for the product they are viewing. The customers will also see the relative measurements, the tighter and the looser size, and where and by how much will it be looser or tighter.

How does this work?

The tool is based on actual measurements of the product. Typically, most products of a particular category from the same brand measure the same. We do mathematical computations to calculate the distance between the measurements of the product the user is looking at, and the measurements of the brand and Product Category the user has worn before and considers as to fit him right. The recommended product size is the one which has the minimum distance with the measurements of the product the user is looking at.

Changed BSNL plan

Posted: 08 Sep 2013 11:03 PM PDT

So I was using BSNL 1350 Annual Plan (13500 + taxes), 4 mbps for 20 GB then 512 kbps, but BSNL has been hiking the costs

a. Rs.75 increase in plan

b. 11 months cost instead of 10 in case of annual plans

c. removal of 1% discount on online payment

d. changing to free calls from all network to only BSNL network

So my cost would be expected to go up from around 15k per annum to around 18k

Wanted to remove, but the other options are scarier & am a bit hesitant to go back to the only other service that was decent (Airtel) which is still equally costlier.

Hence, now when the time for the renewal of online payment came. I have decided to test waters first by switching to a monthly lower plan of 900 + taxes per month (expect cost to be 12k per annum, 2 mbps for 8 GB, 512 kbps beyond).

On the look out for other ISP options & may probably switch to the lowest plan possible (500/600 ones) while I test the new ISP.

So looking forward to recommendations of ISPs around Anna Nagar, Shenoy Nagar, Kilpauk, Kellys in Chennai

(Uptime is primary, reasonable speed & then cost would be the factors)

Reliance is ruled out & unless Hathway has improved a LOT in the last few years is ruled out as well...

Tennis General News

Posted: 08 Sep 2013 10:33 PM PDT

I am starting new thread for tennis (general news only - not for grand slam event)

Rogers cup is going on in Canada (3 set matches)

Federer and Nadal both are out in QF. Federer lost stupidly against Tsonga even after being up 5-1 in 3rd set :D. First time ever in his carrer Federer lost such an easy win. Anyway thats past.

Del Potro defeated practice-less Nadal in QF relatively easily. 7-6, 6-1 :D

Since Nadal lost in QF and Murray today reached final by defeating Tsonga, hence Murray gets enough points to surpasss Nadal. Nadal actually lost 800 points from Olympics last year. Official declaration will be on Monday.

So its after more than 4 years that someone other than Federer or Nadal is in 2nd place.

Federer needs to watchout. The pt difference betwn him and Murray is not much now (just 1000+) plus Federer has to defend 2000 pts from US open. So tough task. He shudnt take things lightly anymore.
