ACT broadband from best to worst

Posted: 22 Sep 2013 03:02 AM PDT

I have applied for transfer of connection as I have moved to a new house on 14th sep 2013.

My ticket number - 1221583.

The house is in the same area where I was residing earlier ( Nagawara, Bangalore - 560045).

Already 8 days are over from the day I raised the ticket. But still nobody has contacted me from ACT so far. I called up customer care almost 10 times. All the time I get the same stereotype answer that they forwarded to the concerned department. I am in urgent need of the connection; but these type of lazy action and lazy words from them irritates.

Note that, when I have applied for new connection 2 years back, they were very quick to call back, they were quick to install and everything was perfect. But now, they have SWALLOWED enough money and not willing to move their back to do their work.

So PATHETIC service from ACT broadband.

Romedy Now Channel available on Hathway

New Channel called "Romedy Now" is being telecased on channel 140 on Hathway. Read somewhere that this channel will show both movies and serials in the romance and comedy genres. Not sure if the channel is being telecasted just as a free preview like those HBO channels.

Feedback required for a story being done by CNBC Awaaz

Posted: 22 Sep 2013 02:10 AM PDT

I am doing a story on slow broadband speeds in India. It would be really nice if I could get an insight into the problem faced by broadband consumers probably through a brief interview/interaction with you. I would also like to know if consumers are getting any relief from Trai.

Alright. Post your feedback in concise points. I personally have no clue about TRAI helping out broadband customers in India. From what I read here, nodal officers and that pgportal something?

The traditional Boxing Day Test returns to South African shores for the 2013-14 season with India scheduled to play the first of three Tests in the home summer. CSA cancelled the fixture last season and opted to play three T20s against New Zealand over the festive period instead in the hope of attracting bigger in-stadium audiences. Although the matches were sell-outs, there was a public outcry about the lack of a Test match and with India visiting this season, the administrators have reinstalled the fixture and handed it back to its usual home, Kingsmead in Durban.

Yes Johannesburg this time rather than Centurion.

Difference between underground cable and overhead lines for broadband

Posted: 22 Sep 2013 12:21 AM PDT

What is the difference between underground cabling of broadband and providing broadband via overhead wires[similar to cable tv]?

Can you let me know about the pros and cons of both in terms of speed and reliabilty?

DSL not stable

Posted: 22 Sep 2013 12:09 AM PDT

The DSL light on my BSNL wifi modem becomes unstable during night time especially after 7:00pm and gets stable for only like 5-10 minutes and then again starts blinking.
I'm a gamer so the frequent disconnections at night don't allow me to play online.
I don't face such problems during day time.
The plan I'm using is BBG ULD 1425 PLUS COMBO
Also as per this plan I should get a speed of 4MBPS but while testing with BSNL speed tester it usually shows a speed of 2.5-2.7MBPS

Any help would be appreciated thanks

Changed BSNL plan

Posted: 21 Sep 2013 11:51 PM PDT

So I was using BSNL 1350 Annual Plan (13500 + taxes), 4 mbps for 20 GB then 512 kbps, but BSNL has been hiking the costs

a. Rs.75 increase in plan

b. 11 months cost instead of 10 in case of annual plans

c. removal of 1% discount on online payment

d. changing to free calls from all network to only BSNL network

So my cost would be expected to go up from around 15k per annum to around 18k

Wanted to remove, but the other options are scarier & am a bit hesitant to go back to the only other service that was decent (Airtel) which is still equally costlier.

Hence, now when the time for the renewal of online payment came. I have decided to test waters first by switching to a monthly lower plan of 900 + taxes per month (expect cost to be 12k per annum, 2 mbps for 8 GB, 512 kbps beyond).

On the look out for other ISP options & may probably switch to the lowest plan possible (500/600 ones) while I test the new ISP.

So looking forward to recommendations of ISPs around Anna Nagar, Shenoy Nagar, Kilpauk, Kellys in Chennai

(Uptime is primary, reasonable speed & then cost would be the factors)

Reliance is ruled out & unless Hathway has improved a LOT in the last few years is ruled out as well...

Take advantage of night unlimited 2am-8am

Posted: 21 Sep 2013 11:50 PM PDT

Since I am seriously compromised on FUP with BSNL and affordability of the BSNL plans, I was considering taking an additional connection 2Mbps for the night 2am-8am. Got the idea from someone else here. Was wondering if anyone has used it and how they schedule the downloads?

I have a timer plug, which I can make it turn on and off at 2:15 and off at 7:45am. So I can switch on the modem and router automatically. To this I should connect my NAS which should wake on lan and start downloading once the internet comes on. Only issue is my NAS has only one ethernet port and so if I need to use the second internet, then I need to figure out how the NAS can take IP from 2 routers between certain times...

Anyone done this successfully? Thanks for any ideas/suggestions.

Where is FTTH available in Delhi?

Posted: 21 Sep 2013 11:41 PM PDT

I want a fibre connection for better pings for gaming, using a MTNL broadband as of now(decent connection, 40-60 pings in india servers in mumbai, hyderabad etc), since MTNL FTTH seems the cheapest i would like to have it only.
Any idea what areas it is available in general?
I myself live uttam nagar(near vikas puri and janak puri) so it would be great it someone can confirm its availability here.

ACT worst broadband in service and product

Posted: 21 Sep 2013 09:36 PM PDT

Hi Every one,

I have chosen 40gb FUP with 15mbps plan last month by paying 6 months in advance.

--The power connection issues were there before

--Later the FUP usage was getting over in 3 to 4 days

--Initially it was the issue with server calculation and did reset

--After when I was out of two town for a week the usage of 40gb got over again

--When I have sent multiple emails there was no response

--Atlast I have got a call asking we are unable to solve the issue, because I was sending multiple emails they were forcing me to cancel the connection and refund my money

--Account number: 390085

This is the horrible service team I have ever seen and only broadband who is asking to cancel the connection because of their issue???

Please be aware of the broadband as they never get back to you and never service a customer anytime.

Even ACT who is monitoring this forum cant help as the decision of cancellation seems to have come from ACT management.

Regards

Airtel 4G LTE speeds are now restricted at 10mbps in all circles

Posted: 21 Sep 2013 07:16 PM PDT

I am from Pune. Had two demos in last two days (25 and 26 June 2013). Must admit the sales guys were very cooperative. Scanned my entire apartment, only 2 bars in gallery and a window but still was getting 10 down 5 up. Airtel guys said the range is a big problem, you have to be in 300 to 400 meter periphery from the tower. So we tried the speed tests on terrace too.

Now, this is where it gets interesting. On terrace (of our 8 floor building), the single was full. I was expecting significant speed improvements.

But to my astonishment they were still stuck on 10 Mbps down and 10 Mbps up. No improvements on download speeds, even after single improvement from 2 bars to full 5 bars? Occasionally we hit 12 Mbps for a brief second, but that's it.

We tried downloads from different sites, same story.

System reboots, dongle reboots, same story.

It was a ZTE MF880 with MiMo support.

I can recall a demo some time early this year, where a Huawei E392 was cranking 33 down and 11 up in inorbit mall. Was very impressed back then.

So what's going on here? Even on full bars, I am not getting any speed improvements past 10Mbps down and 10Mbps up.

Is it a device issue? ZTE MF880 supports only 67 down / 17 up, while Huawei E392 is 100 down / 50 up.

OR Airtel is throttling the bandwidth?

Anyone having a different experience?

Not sure if real.

Google Play

- A photo and video mode, supporting many features (burst mode, timer mode, scene mode, shutter speed on Sony devices, ...)
- A panorama mode, currently semi-broken
- A PicSphere mode, open-source replacement of Google's PhotoSphere, to do 360° sphere shots
- A review drawer, by sliding from the top of the screen (in portrait). It shows your latest pictures.

Sony Play Station 2,

While I plan to list this item on Ebay/OLX soon, I just wanted to know what my friends on IBF would suggest.

I've got a PS2 (SCPH-9004CB) against some outstanding amount, the playstation 2 is sealed pack, and comes with bill (but in my name)

and is genuine, un-touched.

What should be the fair price I should be looking at ???

Thanks...........

Edit:

Flipkart lists the same for Rs.6830/-

Should I sell it for 5800, do I have a chance with giving 1000 off

Tata SKY+ New DVR STB split wide open (The inside with photos :)

Posted: 21 Sep 2013 06:34 PM PDT

Well its a sturday and I didnt really have anything else today , woke up at 6am and there was no electricity , so I decided it was time to use the new TATA SKY + DVR STB in a diffrent way .

So I decided to open it up to see what they have hidden inside , what kinda upgrade we can try ourselfs to get more recording time , can we transffer the recorded videos to a PC ....and guys the answers were all positive!!!

Opening the Tata sky STB is one of the easiest experiments I have ever done (this may vary from person to person , opening your STB up causes your warranty to be void , so please do this at your own risk - this is not my responsibility nor is it the forums , but all I can say is its very hard to do something wrong and mess it up ) .

Opened up the 5 screws of the STB , one on each side and 3 at the back of the stb , this causes the upper lid of the STB to slide off , so once the screws are removed just gently slide the top of the STB open.

The good thing is its a regular SATA Desktop (not laptop) HDD.
It Can easily be replaced with another HDD say a 500 GB increasing your recording capacity by 3.5 times :).

To see if this is possible connected this HDD to my PC :
Vola.... The file format is FAT 32 !!! so what you would ideally need to do is
Buy a new SATA - Desktop HDD - create one big partition and format it in FAT 32 and then connect it to the STB and it should simply work (I havent tried this yet , but will do it next week , but i dont have any doubts it will just work).

The good thing is in case you have recorded something important and you need to transffer to the PC you can do it this way (since the file system is FAT 32!!

Screen shots of the HDD connected to my PC :

http://img366.imageshack.us/img366/575/wd1zd9.jpg

After all this o just put back everything to gether , and switch on the STB and well everything just worked like nothing happened :)
Feedback appriciated!

Any review for reliance thunder broadband plans in Lucknow ?

Posted: 21 Sep 2013 12:15 PM PDT

Hello everyone !
I've just joined this forum .I'm a BSNL broadband user but really pissed off with their pathetic service .its getting worse day by day .I need to watch a lot of lectures so I need a good broadband service with at least  2 MBPS speed plans ..I reside at Indiranagar A block ,I mean in the main city and it's a posh area but when I contacted airtel ,they said sir there is unavailability of tags ,their own sales person saying that "sir! there 3-4 pending connection in my own hands too but what to do when pairs are not free " .It's ridiculous when people are ready to pay for a new connection and company saying we are out of pair rather increasing the pair for further demands.I got to know that reliance has launched thunder plans with so economical rates and having good speed plans like 2 mbps/4 mbps .so anyone here from Lucknow Indiranagar area who can give me review about reliance thunder plans with exact download speeds and up timings .Thank you!

Hathway Hyderabad: Analog signals off

Posted: 21 Sep 2013 11:32 AM PDT

Apparently the AP High Court had given a deadline for this to happen and today was the day.

So hopefully, we might see more channels being added in the digital bouquet.

Airtel Corporate plan changes - No more A2O free

Posted: 21 Sep 2013 09:50 AM PDT

So, I just got a message that Airtel no longer has minutes to other mobiles free on my corporate connection, only A2A instead of A2M/A2O (other mobiles) & also SMSes are charged. Customer care said new plans are coming and you can wait for a while (2-3 days in their words) and choose. I personally am tempted to dump Airtel. But before I do, would like feedback on which other provider is better in Chennai.

No need of 3G. So non-3G providers are also fine. Low-cost and good coverage are what I am looking at. Was paying 149+tax for 300 A2M & around 150-200 SMS you can say (which I use around 50-60%).

Also, I feel others will join the bandwagon.. So thinking if should hold on to Craptel.

P.S - For dumping, I will switch to prepaid Airtel & then move out as that seems as easier process for MNP
