Aadhaar for Scholarship and Students

Posted: 22 Aug 2013 02:28 AM PDT

Business Line : News / Education : Aadhaar enrolment, a must for students, says UGC

After being a facilitator of cash benefit transfers, LPG supply and provident fund, Aadhaar will now turn vital for students too. In a communication sent to universities, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked them to ensure Aadhaar enrolment by their students.

“Universities and each of the affiliated colleges may appoint a nodal officer for helping the students for Aadhar enrolment,’’ Akhilesh Gupta, Secretary, UGC said in a circular. It was proposed to link Aadhaar with students’ bank account numbers so that there could be direct cash transfer of scholarships and fellowships, he said.

The UGC also directed the students to collaborate with concerned State/central authorities engaged in Aadhaar enrolments to speed up the work. Though no last deadline has yet been fixed by the higher education regulator, the circular said, “This needs to be taken up on high priority.”

Some universities have already started preliminary work for the task. “Yesterday, we spoke to officials concerned and requested them to set up a separate camp to enrol students of the university,’’ a functionary of the University of Hyderabad told Business Line on Thursday.

The enrolment process might begin by next month, he added.

The process is expected to be massive given the fact that there are over 250 universities in the country.

A good number of students depend on scholarships from the Social Welfare Department for reimbursement of mess bills besides merit scholarships and fellowships for research-related programmes.

BSNL - Good riddance !

Posted: 22 Aug 2013 01:46 AM PDT

I had two BSNL broadband connections, one of which dated back to 2004-5. Since last two years one of my connection was giving problem during rainy season, during rains it used to frequently disconnect and my complaint to them met deaf ears. Once a pro BSNL customer, I finally decided to get rid of them and shift to airtel, I applied for surrender of both my connections and two new connections from airtel. Got the airtel connection the very next day, where BSNL took 10 days and various visits to get one of my connection disconnected, while they refuse to disconnect another one on the pre-text that they need the modem they had provided me to be returned. The modem in question was given to me in 2010 upon opting for 1yr committed period ( I had disconnected my line for a year in 2009, so it was kind of new connection in 2010), their service record shows "FREE" modem, and they saying that I need to return them the "FREE" modem. Hilarious, I know, I went and spoke to the DE who is not willing to listen, spoke to the CO, who says she cant do anything and I need to speak to the DE, at the end frustrated I was, I requested the CO to charge me for the modem in the next bill but at least disconnect the broadband. She says she will try to speak to the DE and get it charged in the next bill and let me know. They don't even understand the meaning of "FREE".

Finally, good riddance ! (provided they disconnect by charging me for the modem Rs 1000/-)

ACT broadband Bangalore worst service

Posted: 22 Aug 2013 12:24 AM PDT

I am a customer of ACT broadband for last six months, i opted for 15 Mbps 40 GB plan, from 1st of this month i started experiencing .38-.44 mbps speed, i lodged a complaint and the feedback i received are really funny

1. I utilised 40 GB in four hours of previous day , i don't know whether that is possible by anyone to use- No auto updates are on and i requested them, which website or to which ip the system was connected and used this ? No reply from them

2. Then the customer service executive told, i might have used a router without password, the funniest part is There is no router at my home and i connect the cable directly to one PC

3. I also heard similar issue from my friends, ACT is not a reliable service provider, This is the problem with the unknown brands, you get a grievance redressal .

I DON'T SUGGEST "ACT BROADBAND" IN BANGALORE FOR ANY ONE LOOKING FOR A NEW BROADBAND CONNECTION

Thanks,

Android smartphone in Rs. 10000-12000 price segment

Posted: 21 Aug 2013 11:58 PM PDT

So a friend of mine is looking to buy an Android phone. He essentially started with a Windows Mobile based HTC smartphone. Switched to Blackberry. Has been using a featurephone for the last couple of months. Now wants an Android device.

His budget is between Rs. 10-12K. He can at max stretch it to Rs. 14K but not above.

I suggested him to take my Galaxy Nexus for Rs. 10K as I would most likely get the Moto X which it is launched this month or next. But he wants to look at options for new phones.

About him? He is a Facebook addict. Other than that his company uses Google Apps. So, needs are quite basic. I do not think he would be running complex games on the phone. Usable camera would be great.

What would you guys suggest?

Anil Kapoor to play Jack Bauer in Indian version of 24

Posted: 21 Aug 2013 11:16 PM PDT

One of my best TV series of all time becoming desi!

Colors, Anil Kapoor ink deal to broadcast '24' in India > afaqs! news & features

Anil kapoor, please do some justice with Jack Bauer.

I also read something about cast: Chunky Pandey is in it :D

As for the cast and crew, Kapoor has promised the channel that there will be no known names on the show. However, word is that Ronit Roy, Atul Kulkarni, Chunky Pandey and Vidyut Jamwar will essay some of the lead roles. And, as we already know, Kapoor will play the main protagonist, anti-terror squad leader Jack Bauer, essayed by his favourite actor Keifer Sutherland in the original version. What's more? Abhinao Deo of Delhi Belly fame will direct the show. One wonders though, who will play the middle-eastern leader Omar Hassan, the role bagged by Kapoor in the American series...

MTNL Broadband VDSL2 User Experiences

Posted: 21 Aug 2013 10:38 PM PDT

I wanted to start a new experience thread simply to discuss MTNL VDSL.

Some things to consider before/after taking a new VDSL connection

SNR margins (SNRM)
Below 9 dB : Poor experience with lots of HEC and CRC errors. Line will disconnect frequently.
9   - 11  dB : Ok but not ideal. Disconnections will be there if some unexpected variance is introduced by rains, humidity in the wire.
12 - 16  dB : Ideal and realistic value. Expect almost no disconnections as the line has more wiggle room for tolerating variances.
17 dB and up : God Mode. Lucky few get this on VDSL synced at 30 mbps and up. So far I have seen various stats and no one has reported this SNRM (That is because VDSL sync rates are always higher)

Higher you sync rate, lower the SNRM will be. Lower the SNRM, lower the connection reliability. Lower reliability means frequent disconnections. Hence ISP's have a setting in DSLAM to artificially increase SNRM value for a particular phone line. Hence you sync at lower rate and line automagically becomes stable.

Attenuation may not be that important after all. It reduces sync speeds over a distance but is not an indicator of connection reliability. (You can roughly calculate your line length from it. Do it here)

Apply for VDSL connection only if you are within half km. Otherwise you will get ADSL like sync rates.

I will update this entry with some of our findings. Since VDSL is somewhat new to India, this thread can help some early adopters.

Currently the speeds are decent for fast servers. But single streams are slow due to a bottleneck somewhere.

Formula-1 News and Updates

Friends, instead of starting new thread for each news, I thought of opening a separate thread for F1 news. So, here I start...

Standardising Formula One machinery
Five-year FIA cost-culling plan revealed
15/10/08

A British newspaper has revealed the FIA's five-year plan to radically slash costs, with the body's president arguing Formula One has become 'unsustainable'.

The centrepiece of the package, to be discussed with the F1 teams' alliance FOTA next week in Geneva, is the standardisation of expensive car parts that add little to the show.

The London publication The Times claims that Bernie Ecclestone, the Chief Executive of F1's commercial rights holder, backs the Max Mosley-devised plan to 'dramatically' cut costs.

Among the measures is the introduction of a controversial standard engine design for 2010, additional energy recovery systems and fuel-efficient engines for 2013, and many 'common parts' for the chassis.

"We are completely open to new ideas," Mosley, albeit insisting that engines must be made available to small teams at a low cost, said in a letter to the team bosses.

An FIA spokesman said he will not comment prior to the meeting.

MTNL VDSL Installation queries

Posted: 21 Aug 2013 08:27 PM PDT

I'm a MTNL triband user and thinking to shift to VDSL.

Have some queries:

1. What are the installation charges including the set up, the wiring and the one-time deposits?

2. Is it necessary to keep a telephone or can I get rid of it as nobody uses land-line here. If I cannot get rid of it, then what's the monthly charge for the telephone?

3. What is the monthly charge for the VDSL wireless router?

worst customer service by tata docomo

Posted: 21 Aug 2013 01:37 PM PDT

Recently I had worst service experience with tata docomo. I am using SIM of tata docomo with internet connectivity. In last week, to my surprise, two times  I felt that my balance was reducing at a much higher rate. Once it was reduced to zero and another time just after my recharge some rupees were deducted. When I inquired about this with service center they were not able to give any satisfactory answer. Moreover they blame me that I might have downloaded something....so pathetic...I have decided that I will switch to some other service provider.

Mobile operator in Mumbai / Maharashtra circle with decent 3G ?

Posted: 21 Aug 2013 01:33 PM PDT

Thanks to Failtel who deactivated and recycled my prepaid number few months back, I will now have to get a new mobile phone number in either Mumbai or Maharashtra circle (after 2 months). I use only prepaid mostly because of lesser calls and very less SMS messages.
But I am interested in getting a 3G connection for the number I will be getting.
The phone will be used in Pune and Mumbai so I would prefer something which has 3G in both these circles.
Which operator should I opt for ? The operator should have decent 3G connectivity and decent plans. Unlimited usage on 2G after 3G quota is over would be great but not really required.

On Phones, Lock screen widgets start in a 'minimized' state when the screen turns on. To view the the full widget, 'maximize' it by swiping down. This is how Lock screen widgets work on Android 4.2. We are looking into ways of altering this behaviour without negatively affecting the user experience.

On Tablets, Lock screen widgets show in the 'maximized' state by default.

Indian government to monitor all communications through Central Monitoring System

Posted: 21 Aug 2013 10:29 AM PDT

Starting from this month, all telecommunications and Internet communications in India will be analysed by the government and its agencies. This means that everything we say or text over the phone, write, post or browse over the Internet will be centrally monitored by Indian authorities. This totalitarian type of surveillance will be incorporated in none other than the Central Monitoring System (CMS).

The Central Monitoring System (CMS) may be another step in the wrong direction, especially with the lack of privacy laws to protect Indian citizens against potential abuse. Yet, all telecommunications and internet communications are to be monitored by Indian authorities through the CMS, despite the fact that it remains unclear how our data will be used.

It will be connected with the Telephone Call Interception System (TCIS) which will help monitor voice calls, SMS and MMS, fax communications on landlines, CDMA, video calls, GSM and 3G networks. Agencies which will have access to the CMS include the Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW), the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the National Investigation Agency (NIA), the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), the Narcotics Control Bureau, and the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Last October, the NIA approached the Department of Telecom requesting for connection with the CMS to help it intercept phone calls and monitor social networking sites without the cooperation of telcos. NIA is currently monitoring eight out of 10,000 telephone lines and if connected with the CMS, NIA will also get access to e-mails and other social media platforms. Essentially, CMS will be converging all the interception lines at one location for Indian law enforcement agencies to access them. CMS will be capable of intercepting our calls and analyzing our data on social networking sites, and also tracking encrypted signals. Thus our attempts to protect our data from ubiquitous surveillance would be futile.

Would recommend creating new thread for any big news & as usual we have threads for specific series/tournaments.. This is for something general random posts related to cricket...Kind of the Cricket Offtopic thread...

A Few Concerns Regarding the New 50MBps Plans

Posted: 21 Aug 2013 09:58 AM PDT

Hey,

I've been a subscriber since Oct of last year (187792) and am currently on the ACT BB DOUBLE PREMIUM plan which is 10MBps till 75GB. I am considering switching to the new ACT BB SOHO Value plan which is 50MBps till 250GB for Rs. 3299 p/m. I currently have two concerns:

1. Why is the post-FUP speed 2MBps when we are paying more than Hyderabad who has a post-FUP speed of 6MBps?

2. Will I be able to switch back to my current plan if I decide the 50MBps plan is not worth it? I absolutely detest the current roster of plans so I do not want to choose between my current plan and a 25MBps plan.

Thanks guys,
