Small States or Big States - Telangana could be new state (?)

Posted: 30 Jul 2013 03:00 AM PDT

Manmohan govt blinks, signals splitting Andhra for Telangana

HYDERABAD: Eleven days after TRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao began an indefinite fast for Telangana, the Centre on Wednesday announced that the process of formation of a separate state was being set into motion and that a resolution to this effect would be moved in the Andhra Pradesh assembly shortly. Though he did not specify the timing, there is speculation that it may be tabled as early as Thursday.

Tata Sky DTH migrating to MPEG4; Will exchange MPEG2 STBs free of cost!

Posted: 30 Jul 2013 02:48 AM PDT

We are replacing close to 5-6 million MPEG-2 SD STBs at no cost to consumers over the next year. All of this is coming in from internal accruals.

But you need to wait for one more year to see many new channels

We have been adding channels in a phased manner; the process will now be accelerated with the MPEG-4 STB. By June-July next year we should be able to revise our channel offerings to consumers,

Reliance Broadband down in Mumbai - western suburbs

Posted: 30 Jul 2013 02:35 AM PDT

My Internet service has been down for the last 4 days and Reliance Broadband customer service would promise to get it rectified. Eventually I got really pissed and asked to talk to a manager. My Krishna came online and informed me that the problem is with Reliance and BMC as Reliance has not paid the rents and BMC has cut the service and they have no "ETR" aka ETA for the service to be up. Well so I figured that this is now not working for me. I am already fishing for another provider in the Mumbai murky waters.

Apparently the Reliance Broadband service has had this problem earlier; Mr. Krishna told me so and this has been corroborated by this Forum and also my family informed me the same - I was traveling out of India and recollected the issue. Reliance and BMC have problems and all that Reliance really does is dig elsewhere and provide access. This is cheating in my opinion. If the company does not have a proper cable system, has rent issues or plain does not have the necessary infrastructure to provide a service, they should not sell the service. I may go to the consumer court for the loss of my opportunities and the time spent on call and still not having internet access.

If there are other people in the Western suburbs facing this problem, please ping me and let us get together to file a case against Reliance.

Beam Fiber: are you throttling Youtube

Posted: 30 Jul 2013 01:59 AM PDT

As soon as you rolled out the new plans this month, i have found Youtube buffering an annoying issue.

It was pretty good last month but when my speed increased to 25 Mbps (rs.1660 plan), Youtube has has become noticeably slower.

Although I love the speeds, the download speed is near perfect, the problem is only Youtube (I have to buffer a video on 360p on my 4Mbps fallback speed -this is not right).

Considering that 50% of all the browsing I do is on Youtube, this is be quite a big problem for me and I hope to hear your answer to this.

Has anybody else notice this problem

Wired Broadband in Millennium Tower, Sector 9, Sanpada, Navi Mumbai

Posted: 30 Jul 2013 01:34 AM PDT

Hi everyone,

We are living in a rented apartment in Millennium Tower, Sector 9, Sanpada, Navi Mumbai. Our requirement is high speed wired broadband (Total of 8 mbps atleast) and low ping. We are even willing to take upto 3 different broadband connections and even from different ISPs. This is because the flat has two floors and sharing a single net connection via wifi would be difficult as well as adversely impact the ping for the guys who is playing online games. Also, different isp means having backups is one net suffers downtime.

Till now only Airtel has confirmed their presence in my building but their FUP limit is ridiculous. We are willing to pay upto Rs 3000 p.m.

We have contacted a local cable operator by the name of "Om star" has told us that their connection is not available in our area.

I have also contacted Reliance about their presence in my area but they haven't reverted anything till now. Also, I am bit doubtful about their service after reading about user experiences, complaining about high ping and frequent disconnection.

Please suggest a broadband connection/ISP provided which operate in this area as I am new to this city/area.

Thanks in advance

Chief Minister misspelled as Thief Minister in Sikkim

Ouch!

http://ibnlive.in.com/news/sikkim-chief-minister-spelled-thief-minister-in-english-textbook/410422-3-230.html

The standards of Engish language in Sikkim has stooped to a new low. A look at the Class V text books shows glaring errors. The error can be witnessed in just one page of the Elementary Environment Science text book.

The Chief Minister is named 'Thief Minister'. Four officials have been suspended over the incident.
Among other howlers, Hectares are 'hectores' and certified is 'cerelified'. The textbook has been published by Delhi-based Tulip Publications. Teachers have been asked to make corrections in textbook.

Firefox's Australis Theme May Have Disastrous Consequences For Users Who Customize The Browser

Posted: 30 Jul 2013 01:07 AM PDT

The new Australis theme has been looming around the heads of the Firefox community for a very long time. Most of what we - that is the public - know about the theme is that it will modify how Firefox looks as it will replace the current default theme when it is released. What many Firefox users may not be aware of though is that Australis is more than just a theme replacement as it will affect the way we customize the browser.

It has not been made clear up until now what this really means and while nothing has been set to stone yet, according to Mozilla, some of the proposed changes will affect many users of the browser. Here is a list of (proposed) changes to customization options as discussed on Bugzilla:

     * The Add-ons toolbar (former status bar) will be removed. Mozilla plans to move all add-on icons formerly displayed in the bar in the main navigational toolbar instead (just like Chrome does).     * Custom toolbars will be removed. Icons displayed in those toolbars will be moved to the main navigational toolbar as well.     * The back, forward, reload and stop buttons as well as the url bar will be placed at the beginning of the main toolbar. They can no longer be moved to another location.     * Items can no longer be placed in the menu toolbar. All items that have been placed there - by add-ons for instance - will be moved to the navigational toolbar instead.     * Small icons will no longer be supported.     * Third party toolbars such as Ask, AVG, Babylon or Norton will remain untouched.     * The tabstrip's customization area is limited to one area on the side of the tabs closest to the menu button. All items displayed in the tabstrip will be displayed there.

firefox australis

Again, Mozilla notes that this has not set in to stone yet and that users can voice their opinion on Mozilla's Dev mailing list.

Probably the greatest strength of the Firefox web browser besides its awesome add-on support are the customizations that you can make to the browser. You are not stuck with a browser that you cannot modify at all (Chrome) but can use it just the way you like it. If you want the add-on bar you can display it, if you do not, then you leave it disabled. The same is true for other toolbars, the location of add-on icons and browser icons that you can place almost anywhere, or the option to display the old menu bar or the single Firefox button.

Taking that away from users, or part of it, is a huge issue and I'm not sure if Mozilla is really aware of that. What's your take on the proposed changes?

Androidly-The first real smart watch

Posted: 30 Jul 2013 12:36 AM PDT

A bunch of Indian whiz-teens overtook IT giants like Apple, Google, Samsung and Sony in bringing out a fully functional smart watch. Androidly Systems, the Delhi based start-up has given the watch also the same name-Androidly. They claim it to be the  as the smallest Android device in the world.

And, who made it? A team of five who prefer to call themselves 'team of dreamers' One of them is in his late teens, the other four in early twenties! All bitten by the computer bug and the entrepreneur bug.

Tech Specs :

416 MHz processor
256 MB RAM
8 GB of storage via SD card
2 megapixel camera
2-inch, 320 x 240 pixel capacitive touchscreen
GPS / aGPS, accelerometer, Bluetooth 2.0, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g and GSM network support
And the machine runs on Android 2.2 Froyo

Airtel chennai users,Some questions for you..

Posted: 29 Jul 2013 11:35 PM PDT

Hi guys I'm thinking about shifting to airtel, Ive been a long time user of bsnl (for like 10 years now), now thinking of  shifting.

I'm thinking about taking the rapid 80gb plan (80gb, 8 mbps, 512 kbps after quota).

1) Do you really get the speed advertised? I've seen youtube videos of it, but is it really true? And how is the upload speed? I've heard 0.8mbps is the upload speed for most airtel plans. I'm currently stuck with 300kbps upload with bsnl, so this will be a massive boost.

2)How is the ping to singapore (and other servers like eu/us)? This is actually the most important part for me as I play a lot, dota/sc etc. Specifically If there are dota 2/lol players here what is your ping to the sea server? and could you do a tracert of sg.logon.battle.net.

With bsnl I normally get anywhere between 40-90 ping to singapore, and 250 to the U.S, and 150-200 to EU. But off late I've been getting terrible pings (normally this is fixed by restarting your modem till you get a good ping..but it doesnt seem to be working). do you get the same low pings in airtel, or it higher?

3) Customer support: Now I know this is non existant in bsnl, so anything would be a huge improvement, but in bsnl I knew a lineman who could atleast get people to look at something at times (mostly connection down, line dead kinda issues). But airtel I'd have to rely on the phones. So is it worth anything at  all?

4) blocked websites: Another thing that bsnl has started doing recently, a lot of filesharing and image hosting sites are blocked, I've heard airtel is pretty strict on this too. On bsnl I've gotten by using proxies, can you do the same on airtel?

So yeah, I've heard a lot of bad stuff about airtel, but also a lot of people tend to swear by it, so I'm really confused.

Online streaming is not smooth on Reliance Broadband

Posted: 29 Jul 2013 11:27 PM PDT

Hello,

I apologize if this topic is already discussed.

Installed reliance broadband 2days back, 2Mbps pack.

I get proper speed while torrent download, once i got 10Mbps for a torrent (downloaded a movie-700MB in 34mins.)

Youtube works fine. Can watch 480p videos without any issue.

But when it comes to online streaming (other than youtube), its not at all smooth. Video keeps stuttering all the time, for all video qualities 240,360,480
I cleaned all cache and all such things needed to be done.

As i have not disconnected my previous internet connection (BSNL 512kbps ) yet, i tried streaming there. Its smooth for 240p.

Please help me with this.

Is there any software that can help me use the full bandwidth while surfing?

Regards.

ACT Broadband Bangalore Reviews

Posted: 29 Jul 2013 10:30 PM PDT

Hello Readers,

My name is Vivek Sinha Anurag and i am going to post some "great" work shown by Act Broadband.

I applied for ACT Broadband 5 Mbps plan [its having cap value of 35GB after that speed will reduce to 256 kbps] by calling their customer care on 16th Aug 2011. I was surprised to see their lightening fast response as the representative came to my doorstep the very next day and on 17th Aug 2011 Mr Ashitt O.S. collected the money and documents and told me that withing 5 days i will get my connection and i even got sms confirmation that my request no is 142263.

Now the real story started. Even after 6 days no one ever bothered to check my request so i called customer care [ 080-42840000] to remind them and i was told that i will get it withing next 2 days. I waited for next 2 days and called them again.

I was surprised to learn a new technical term from them that they are "Uploading network" hence its taking time and soon i will get my connection. Since my work was getting affected because of their delay i applied for a BSNL connection too. Now today is 5th September and i am still waiting for the connection and to my surprise i got the BSNL broadband last week.

I tried escalating this matter and asked the customer care for any high level contact and they said that i need to mail helpdesk@acttv.in. I emailed them but i got no response.

Please note some points regarding ACT broadband before applying ACT broadband
1. They dont have nodal officer/appellate authority [against TRAI rules and i have already escalated this matter to TRAI officials with the help of pgportal.gov.in]
2. They have a customer base of 2500 users in bangalore and they are not able to manage even this small number.
3. They DO NOT PROVIDE STATIC IP [even if they claim to do so]
4. Their customer care service is useless. All you will losse is your balance by talking to them
5. They can "Upload network" [You can imagine the understanding capability of their technicians]
6. They are fast in collecting money but lazy in delivering service

Final conclusion: To be on safe side stay away from them else you will suffer like me. Morning shows the day and even before using their service i am suffering. Don't know what will happen when i get the connection and i face any problem that time.
