Well, yes and no.

Bandwidth prices might become cheaper, but there is still infrastructure, where costs tend not to decrease too much, as well as the workforce (which is steadily increasing).

Since you can get 256k unlimited already for Rs500, maybe in 6 years you'll get 1-2mbit/s for the same price. 750 might get you 4mbit/s and so on - we might provide 25mbit/s as the lowest plan by then, who knows.

Airtel broadband apathy

Like a lot of others, I too have an airtel connection, which I got 2 years back replacing a much adored BSNL, hoping for my "impatience" to be saitated. Well, apart from the other problems in the past, I recently started encuntering speed issues too (the very reason of constant speed that I got my airtel broadband for). A tarrif plan that gives me 2 mbps speed with 30 GB download limit, which I end up paying INR 2050 / month (roughly and I don't make any calls from the phone). Now I've been getting speeds around 0.14 mbps to 0.32 mbps in the day time for the past few days, my current data usage was 5 gb with a 25 gb balance to be finished in the next 12 days.

Hoping it was a minor niggle or a cable breakage, I ignored it for a couple of days, but because of my "Impatience" decided to file a complaint with Airtel. Sent a mail to the Airtel presence ID with no response for a day.

Subsequently decided to call the customer care today morning, hoping to atleast file the complaint. The female tells me she CANNOT log my complaint because their systems were down and I needed to call back after 2 hours. Somehow, managed to file the complaint through some direct calls and then starts the drama with checking of the backend n the engineer visiting me. The guy tests things which and comes to the conclusion that there has been a speed issue in the backend for the past few days.

Now, I tell him to atleast give me a timeframe of getting my speed back. To which he responds there is no timeframe and cannot commit anything on the same. I again ask him to atleast get me an email from their department acknowledging that the speed issues have been there, to which the department responds, they can't mail and I need to again contact the customer support for that.


My thoughts on this:

I end up paying a monthly fixed amount to Airtel, and at times getting dial up speeds. I also own a Reliance broadband data card, which is about 40% of the price , suffices my usage has a 10 gb data limit. The speeds are more than that of Airtel boadband, say around 1, 1.5 mbps mostly. Why at all should I continue with Airtel broadband when I can have more speeds for 40% of the price with the mobility advantage?

Need atleast one reason to not dump airtel forever !!!

Seriously is it possible? While installing Tata Sky DTH i saw a file downloaded by the STB. Then why not broadband? :imwink:

Found the following post in another forum -
"I want to make it clear that the technology behind DTH platform doesn't support to relay internet feed through it.Reason???simple,

The internet requires a two way connection (TCP/IP based, connection oriented) through which you send (upload) and recieve the data(download). But DTH is designed as a one way connection. The DTH operators only send the digital TV signal to your STB and finally to TV through Dish Antenna. Its not possible to send the signals through your Dish Antenna to satellite." :huh:

AM USING BSNL HERE IN COCHIN FOR THE PAST 9 MONTHS( A 3 G CONNECTION) TILL YESTERDAY EVENING THERE WAS NOT EVEN A SINGLE NETWORK ISSUE IT WAS PERFECT BUT FROM YESTERDAY NIGHT AM UNABLE TO MAKE ANY CALLS EVEN THE INCOMING CALLS GETS DISSCONNECTED WITHIN FEW SECONDS.

hi guyz.. im in dire need of help. i need help regarding umg 1831. some prob has arisen and the speed has got extrememly low. lower than a 2g. its some issue regarding connecting thru MP or a windows dial up connection. earlier whn i installed i used only MP to connect and dial p was no issue. but later in some thread here someone recommended to use a dial up connction to stay connected. so i set up a dialup connection too. now both r asking me to connect and if dont connect to both of them, i cant even open a page. also no facility to make a a cal , or recieve or send sms, or make a video call. and no torrent speed at all. the green mark at the bottom does not come and only a redexclamaion mark saying no incoming connections. plz help me! :(

Does the Tata Sky (the simple one not HD) remote allow subtitles for all the channels? By all I mean the following.........

Indian channels (General entertainment....Zee, Sony, Colors, Star Plus etc)
English movie channels such as MGM, WB, Zee Studio, Star Movies
English general entertainment channels such as AXN, Star World
English new channels such as BBC, CNN,
Sports channels such as Start Sports, Neo, ESPN

If yes, how to use/activate subtitles?

In the foreign lands such as the US and UK most of the channels, even live news and sport, if I am correct have subtitles as the hard of hearing need some assistance when watching TV.

I don't think that's the case - I just happen to know that this is where their main office and NOC is, so I guess they "control" the area more by default than by underhanded means.

I don't believe Tikona provide LAN hub - it seems to be something more for the domain of cable ISPs (Tikona is wireless, and by many user accounts on this forum, not very good).

guys i was the lucky one. i ported from Airtel to BSNL (postpaid) in karnataka! i made some quick decision before porting, like paying all dues including last bill generated. then went to BSNL and placed Mobile Number Portability request. crossed my fingers till 6 days and woilaaaa, no. got ported. well, to be frank Airtel people kept calling me till last minute of porting, infact even after BSNL send me confirmation msg of time of porting .
airtel made all possible ways of convincing me , but last they were really ran out of offers.
i ported airtel not because of cost, but because of poor network and customer abusing . like my friend said in previous post, they used activate and services without my consent and some time send half months bill and rest half month in next month bill. this was really annoying.

anyways, to tell you fact BSNL is not the less in terms of customer service. BUT BUT they will never activate any service without my consent. infact if i need to activate some service, i need to visit BSNL cc showroom.
inconvience is the convience!!!! trust me.

If any of their private peers are new, then it probably means they've struck a deal in between when you last looked and now. Such is the nature of the internet - things change (and these graphs tend to change AT LEAST daily).

And one of the networks they peer with is... themselves (AS55577). I'm not sure why they peer with IANA. And the other looks to be some kind of movie studio.

But they still buy 100% of their bandwidth off of Tata, as seen by the route propegation graph.

Why did they give HD channels? Airtel DVR does not support HD. It has HDMI port but that's just for connection. Only Reliance and Tata are having HD DVR set top box.

Airtel just has a NON recorder HD box as far as I know

hi friends there is the software named qmat (google it ) used in old method of backing up firmware of huawei e220 for manual unlock (method and soft can be found by googling) and also soft named huawei bin tool ,and all other flashbox software used to flash mobile phones have ability to back up firmware. so find a friend having umg 1831 with original firmware back up its firmware and save it as bin format then u can flash it on ur modem by using QPST tool (found on forum) or above mentioned softwares aslo u can integrate the bin file in firmware updater exe by using reshack


also some one having original firmware of umg 1831 pls post the parameters of all default nv items they can be saved to txt file format using QPST tool

Sim Crash

Recently I bought a BSNL 3G sim and recharged for Rs.4200 and I also bought the Huawei UMG 1831 USB Modem. It worked fine for 2 weeks and then my sim crashed. I thought it was a manufacturing defect and bought a new BSNL 3G sim. Its not even been 2 days with this new 3G sim and it has crashed again. Both the times it was working fine till my last use but the sim showed it had crashed when I inserted it the next time. My USB Modem says that sim is not being recognised and when I insert the sim in the phone it says "sim crash : contact serive provider". I am using it on Mac OS X Snow Leopard and can anyone tell me what could possibly have gone wrong?

Geohotz does not need any introduction if you use apple product and you have unlocked iphone by yourself. Right now, Geohotz is having hard time.

Well, doesn't look like we will be getting GeoHot's (whose real name is George Hotz) untethered iOS 4.2 jailbreak anytime soon. What's worse is that Sony seems to be trying to make an example of the dude with a lawsuit. According to the Washington Post, a recently filed restraining order against the famed hacker, was recently granted by the courts. This was over the key he released that allowed for PlayStation 3 owners to put another operating system on their console.

Sony's claim is that it opened the door to piracy. While it's true that the other OS feature does open the door to piracy, it doesn't necessarily mean that GeoHot condones piracy. He's gone on the record saying that (of course we can't read the guy's mind, either).

We don't claim to be legal experts, but as far as we know jailbreaking a device is legal. The restraining order bars him from releasing the code, and forces him to remove it from his website despite the fact that it's already all over the internet. He must also turn over all his computers, hard drives and anything else that can be used as evidence.

Simple, right? Just delete anything you don't want them to see. Not so fast, as that would probably just be considered attempting to destroy evidence, and get him into real trouble. Let's just hope he doesn't have some strange kind of porn or nudie pics saved on his computer.

Anyone else think Sony should just hire him to help build security into their next system?

As you are probably aware, iPhone jailbreak master Geoge Hotz, also known as Geohot is in a spot of bother with Sony over his Geohot’s jailbreak for the PS3 so much so that Sony is taking Geohot along with the failOverflow team to court.

I haven’t looked into all the technical and law wrangling of the dispute as it is for the PS3 but as Geohot is known for his jailbreaking of the iPhone I thought I’d pass this along and apparently you can sift through the information on the lawsuit if you wish by hitting up Here.
