SMPS fan, absolute necessity or BS

Posted: 15 Feb 2011 02:58 AM PST

Thanks guys, but i was told by my local service guy that it was not possible to replace just the fan, i would have to replace the whole SMPS (i will take that with a pinch now that you have told me it is, my present SMPS came with the chassis, iball, and hasn't given me any trouble in 4 years), also i checked, that same fan also doubles as the chassis fan. I certainly am going to follow your advice and replace it as soon as i find the time, meanwhile, apart from being a wiseguy in my first post above, i was also seeking some reassurance that if anything did go wrong, it would affect just the power supply and not the rest of the system. Thanks again, will keep you posted.

Pardon me but you can not download the world in two days.
It is just beginning of getting bandwidth costlier. In the future, no unlimited tariffs will be offered from any company. All companies are upgrading their network. They will not offer anything free or unlimited until cost will be covered which they have spent legally and illegally. So, Wait and watch how this will roll. The future network is coming with fiber and LTE/3g.

Spectranet has wireline broadband option. So it is possible.

Hi I have a UMG 1831 USB Data Modem. I want to buy a BSNL 3G Sim to use it with my laptop. I am currently living in Chennai. I called the customer care 4 times and they could not answer my questions. I want to know the following please:

1. What is the process for me to get the Sim with 3G Service activated?

2. What recharge do I have to do to get a Prepaid Unlimited Plan on the card?

3. I heard I have to do some other recharge before I can recharge for the Prepaid Unlimited Plan of Rs. 1499. Is this true?

When a person buys a data card BSNL provides a sim with it.Its just a normal 3g sim with a "normal mobile number" which you can buy individually also. Its just that BSNL provides it as a package with data card. The activation procedure, recharging, topup are all the same for that sim too.You can also use that sim in any gsm mobile and make calls and stuff. If you have a third party data card (unlocked btw) you may use this sim in that card too.

Which services you use on that 3g sim depends on the plan you have chosen (voice plan) or (data plan). The data card has no relation to the 3g sim.You catching my drift.

I ll tell you what I did. That will clear this up.

I first got a 3g sim for 59 rupees. After it got activated, I recharged it with 120 rupees. This 120 rupees recharge put me in the GL-120 plan.I got 200MB of free usage plus 150 rupees of talktime.I used a lot of net on the mobile itself and also connected it to the pc via usb cable and did net on the pc too using mobile as a modem.I depleted the 200MB of free usage within few hours. After it got over whenever i did some net my account balance started decreasing as I got charged for data usage. This was normal. Next thing I did was got a recharge of 1500 for unlimited data plan. The actual cost is 1499 but in certain circles its 1500.Its a normal recharge.Nothing different. Once i did the recharge I got a message recharge successfully done. Then i started using net. There was no decrease in the balance amount as I was now in unlimited internet plan.Later on I got a data card from ebay.Inserted the sim into it and using it to do net on the pc.

Thats it.

Finally few of my doubts are clear after reading your post. I have just 1 more doubt though if you could help me clear out. The thing is I want to buy bsnl 3G Sim. I want to know if I buy a normal sim for Rs 59 and top it up with Rs 99 (gives unlimited 3g service for iPad for 1 day) will i be getting iPad 3g Service on the sim activated?

All Channels now as A la carte in Tata Sky DTH

Posted: 14 Feb 2011 07:57 PM PST

For the past 2 years i'm looking forward to these my pack option. When i heard the news about this recently then i thought this is the right time to buy a DTH. This DTH is purely for my nephew kid. In the regional packs(Tamil) i chose 8 channels & Discovery,Nat Geo, Animal Planet,Disney,Cartoon,Star Movies. Later on i wish to add Discovery science & turbo. Yeah, its costly in a way for just 14 channels. If he grew up he would ask for sports channel too....LOL.

That said these A la carte options are only for minority/limited users. If u need all the channels then you've choose other packages available.

The only thing i hate about DTH is, it is a prepaid only. I always love postpaid....haha....that's me

  • Bhandup
  • Borivali
  • Chembur
  • Colaba
  • Dadar
  • Goregaon
  • G T B Nagar
  • J B Nagar
  • Jogeshwari
  • Kala Chowki
  • Panvel
  • Santa Cruz
  • Thane
  • Vakola
  • Vile Parle

Which means that we should be able to service those areas and some of the surrounding areas almost immediately (for example, Bhandup's PoP would probably service Vikhroli and Mulund, Dadar's PoP would service Mahim, Shivaji Park and Prabhadevi etc).

Again, this is subject to cabling and things of that nature, and this list is subject to change, expansion, and may not be all inclusive. Furthermore, none of this is particularly useful until we can actually turn everything on.

Aha GTB Nagar... Does this means u might be able to provide service in the Sion region??? Or maybe the Pop was established before u started encountering problems with the local cable guys & as such the Pop there now is just for location reasons(read a stepping point to other Pops)... I m hoping the answer is in the former but have a feeling its the latter :( ...

PS As someone mentioned u should seriously start looking at mini townships like Hiranandani Thane or powai & some others like lodha group townships as potential markets... The reason being simple... The prices in these places is at least a 20% premium over the nearby areas as such attracting a higher income class of people who might be more willing to adopt ur service... Infact Hiranandani Powai is a hotspot for foreign exec to rent flats even though they have a higher price & a remote location... Also u can have tie ups in the future with these Builders so that their future projects come preinstalled with ur fibers cables thus making u an more attractive options for the purchasers of these flats... Just my 2 cents...

TechTalk: Mobile Call Charges May Go High

Posted: 14 Feb 2011 07:55 AM PST

Trivandrum: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), on Wednesday, has recommended a six-fold jump in 2G spectrum cost for operators. This is after the Comptroller and Auditor General's (CAG) findings that the exchequer has lost an estimated amount of Rs. 1.76 lakh crore in 2008 by selling 2G licenses bundled with start-up spectrum at Rs. 1,658 crore to pan-India operators.

The operators are currently paying Rs. 1,658 crore for the contracted 6.2 MHz spectrum for pan-India license but TRAI has come out with a new rate of Rs. 10,972.45 crore. Also, each MHz of additional spectrum held by operators should cost a one-time charge of Rs. 4,571.87 crore (all India). However, this would vary from circle to circle and operators would be required to pay only for those circles, where they hold extra spectrum. TRAI has also recommended that the suggested prices should be made effective from April 1, 2010.

This would mean that our mobile bills are going to multiply in the coming days. Imagine the call rates being Rs. 5 or Rs. 6 per minute, for local calls. That would be "disastrous", as the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), the general body for GSM service providers, says.

"This would mean that my mobile charges are going to triple or even more. My father lives abroad and if the call charges are going to be hiked, all I can do is reduce my dependency on mobile phones and make use of cheaper internet based services like Skype or GTalk," says Arun Shajan, Quality Controller, Hilton Hyundai, Trivandrum.

"Also, in the long run, this is going to cause heavy loss for the government as more and more people would turn to the aforementioned services," he adds.

Major telecom operators like Bharti and Vodafone have raised their concern over the new recommendations by TRAI, terming them as "flawed, illogical and discriminatory" against the old operators. The COAI also commented that it is like "changing the goal post in the middle of the game."

However, the telecom operators in Trivandrum, when contacted chose not to comment on this. "I'm not aware of any such issues and as such I have not been intimated about any call charge hikes," says Jyothi Shankar, XX, BSNL, Trivandrum.

Telecom minister Kapil Sibal also criticised the CAG for the methodology used to arrive at the presumptive figures.

Hi,
Slow updates from the project.
The project is on hold now. I forgot the biggest clearance one needs here is a verbal NOC from your parents. Dammm they have changed their minds actually worried that big players will crush me in a short time + plus my less profit public benefit attitude .... now they want me to get into well settled family business. Its time to start convincing them.
(In background progress continues): The hardwares have been ordered. Ubiquiti products will be here by last week feb. The tower guy was good and suggested some alternative low cost tripole based installations. A couple of friends ready to trade roof space for free internet and yes in a written agreement. In total 3 access point on PTMP design will be installed.
