Best WiFi router for Tikona

Posted: 13 Dec 2013 11:20 PM PST

I am a regular user of Tikona having 2 mbps plan. And my connectivity seems to be good most of the time because the tower is not fo far from my home.
Hmm.. I recently bought a new Dell laptop and I uses Apple Ipad and Samsung Galaxy Tab also,
I went to nehru place yesterday, but got confused as which Wifi router I should buy to use the Internet on various devices at home both wirelessly as well as wired.
I have a desktop also.
So which wifi router I should buy to use with tikona! My budget is around 1500-2200 Rs.
I want to use the desktop wired, and laptop, Ipad & samsung galaxy tab wirelessly, and laptop wired if the range is not adequate to go to the floor above(I can extend and keep a seperate wired lan connection to that room, in case to use in the absence of enough signal).

Please suggest me.

Regards, thanks in advance.

Thunder 699, Pune: Frequently getting logged out, cannot log back in immediately

Posted: 13 Dec 2013 10:20 PM PST

Hi,

Last month, I shifted from BSNL to Reliance after about 6 years. Opted for the Thunder 699 plan. While I'm downloading torrents it works fine, even at 10 hours at a stretch with very stable speeds of 220-250 KBps.

But when the connection is idle (no downloading/uploading of torrents), I get logged out randomly. Sometimes after 10 min, sometimes an hour. Not just that, even when I am browsing, or streaming a YouTube video, I get logged out at times. While that's not a problem, I cannot log back in immediately. The Reliance login page just doesn't open. I have tried the following:

- entering the IP address of the login page.

-trying different browsers

-trying 4 different "auto-login" software

Nothing works. I have to restart my router and my computer and wait for random amounts of time.

What could be the issue?

Location: Pune

Router: D Link 2750u

OS: Win XP

Your suggestions/help would be really appreciated.

BJP wants abolition of income, sales, excise tax

Posted: 13 Dec 2013 10:19 PM PST

http://profit.ndtv.com/news/economy/article-bjp-favours-abolition-of-income-sales-excise-tax-374631?ch=34434

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) favours abolition of income, sales and excise tax and the party may include it in its vision document to be unveiled ahead of general elections next year.
...
Former BJP president Nitin Gadkari, who is in charge of preparing the party's vision document, 'India Vision 2025', said that the party is deliberating the matter.
...
"We were talking about tax and although we have not decided as yet...there is a suggestion of complete abolition of income, sales and excise tax," he said at a function on political agenda of political parties.
...
Mr Gadkari said that the total revenue of the country is Rs. 14 lakh crore and 1.5 lakh bank branches are operating in the country presently. "If we abolish these taxes and if we apply around 1 or 1.5 per cent of expenditure or transaction tax, then we will get revenue to the tune of around Rs. 40,000 lakh crore. So those 3.5 lakh people who are using beacons of various colours now, they will not be required anymore as no tribunals or commissioners will be required," he said.
"So I think along with transparency, there should be time-bound result-oriented administration coupled with right way of economic reforms and if it so happens, then the 1.5 lakh banks operating now will become 10 lakhs. There is another suggestion of doing away with Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 notes...we are deliberating on these proposals as we want transparency..." Gadkari said.
...
Echoing Mr Gadkari's thoughts, senior BJP leader Subramanian Swamy said that there was no shortage of resources in the country and "if one had auctioned the natural resources properly, one did not have to have income tax at all".
...
Giving details, he said if the government had auctioned 2G spectrum, it would have got at least Rs. 1.76 lakh crore as extra which went to private hands.
He maintained if the government had auctioned the coal blocks, it would have got Rs. 11 lakh crore and by auctioning the oil sites, Rs. 24 lakh crore could have been realised.

What a good thought :)

Caution: Facebook is monitoring your unreleased posts in status update

Posted: 13 Dec 2013 08:56 PM PST

Facebook is monitoring what you just type but end up not hitting the 'post' in the status update. It is analyzing thoughts that we have intentionally chosen not to share. Facebook wants to know why you didn't publish that status update you started writing.

So Facebook considers your thoughtful discretion about what to post as bad, because it withholds value from Facebook and from other users. Facebook monitors those unposted thoughts to better understand them, in order to build a system that minimizes this deliberate behavior.

This feels dangerously close to "ALL THAT HAPPENS MUST BE KNOWN," a motto of the eponymous dystopian Internet company in Dave Eggers' recent novel The Circle.

I am not aware whether this is in the right section or has it been previously shared. I tried searching the forum.

I find this quite shocking & disturbing. Since the beginning, I've considered g+ as a better option but majority of my friends didn't migrate to the much better community hence I have to use zuckerberg's social service.

Airtel Broadband likely to soon offer 512kbps post FUP on all plans

Posted: 13 Dec 2013 08:30 PM PST

It seems finally Airtel is coming back to it's senses, they have decided to increases post FUP speed to 512 Kbps across all plans which will come into effect from 29th November.Just few days ago I saw a thread here mentioning the increase in speed to 512 kbps in Jaipur,I got excited and called the Customer Care just to inquire the same(i also wanted a PLAN CHANGE)..I think there is still a need to Increase their quota GB's of data provided in their initial plans.I was on 2 Mbps 10 GB FUP RS 700+taxes(100 calls free),I shifted to 1299+taxes with 15 GB( 8 Mbps) data and 1000  local calls free.I am not a heavy downloaded,my bandwidth usage is somewhere between 20-25 GB per months with a decent usage of phone so that plan suits well to me.

I just hope they should increase their FUP speed to at least 1 Mbps, specially in their high end plans!!

Stay away from ACT, Jayanagar 4th T Block, ACT is shameless.

Posted: 13 Dec 2013 08:23 PM PST

To whom it may concern,

I've been using ACT for a long time, it started off well, kept me happy for a few months and then ACT got shameless and they just don't care about anything anymore. You are doing an atrocious job.

So I'm putting it out for people to warn that you SHOULD stay away from ACT, trust me, they just don't care whatever you do. You don't pay, they don't care, you shout on the phone, they don't care, you are nice to them, they don't care. So yea, looks like they made of customers and are stealing their money anyway thus the shamelessness.

Please think upteen times before you call them and say you want a connection.

We have 3 connections alone running in my house, these are the phone numbers registered

1. 974036895x
2. 953804999x
3. 990091029x

I've been having serious problems with the internet, we all use it often and there are disconnections every other alternate day, No kidding. Nobody, I repeat, NOBODY attends to us. What is your problem really in this area? Why don't the technicians attend ASAP? They take days to come and fix a problem when you call, and then the next day, it disconnects and then nobody hears you out.

I've been thinking, you should remove the "GOOD" testimonials off your website and replace them with what we write here.

I still have Airtel running in my house, I'm glad this has been my backup, now if you guys don't attend/call me the moment you read this mail, I'm going to have this connection disconnected since it's been really useless for me. I can't keep paying for services that aren't attended.
I'm not going to pay the month's bill because, I see that that's the only way I get get your attention and have you called.

Shame on you, ACT.

Five-year FIA cost-culling plan revealed
15/10/08

A British newspaper has revealed the FIA's five-year plan to radically slash costs, with the body's president arguing Formula One has become 'unsustainable'.

The centrepiece of the package, to be discussed with the F1 teams' alliance FOTA next week in Geneva, is the standardisation of expensive car parts that add little to the show.

The London publication The Times claims that Bernie Ecclestone, the Chief Executive of F1's commercial rights holder, backs the Max Mosley-devised plan to 'dramatically' cut costs.

Among the measures is the introduction of a controversial standard engine design for 2010, additional energy recovery systems and fuel-efficient engines for 2013, and many 'common parts' for the chassis.

"We are completely open to new ideas," Mosley, albeit insisting that engines must be made available to small teams at a low cost, said in a letter to the team bosses.

An FIA spokesman said he will not comment prior to the meeting.

Many SIMs incorrectly deactivated on 11 Dec 2013

Posted: 13 Dec 2013 07:28 PM PST

Vodafone has incorrectly deactivated my main mobile SIM along with many others on 11 Dec 2013.

Vodafone states that it was a TRAI directive to deactivate all SIMs issued to foreign nationals that are more than 90 days old.
However DoT, TRAI and even the Vodafone Customer Application From (CAF) clearly state that,

Section 10b of CAF
ii) If he/she is foreign national (not being a tourist) then Services will be available only during period of validity if his/her visa.
iii) If he is a foreign tourist then services will be available only during the period of validity of his/her visa or three months from the date of activation of Services whichever is earlier.

I am on an OCI visa which is 'lifelong' and I met others in the store on 'employment' or other types of enon tourist' visas who have had their SIM deactivated.

It is clear that Vodafone is at fault and made a mistake by including non tourist visa foreign nationals in the deactivation when they should have not.

What is disappointing however its Vodafone total lack of responsibility in fixing this error at the earliest.
•    CSR at the store insist that Vodafone was just following TRAI regulations and it is not their fault.
•    Customers are being asked to reapply by submitting all documents and photograph and new CAF just to reactivate the same number.
•    Activation will take 48 hrs and requires a new SIM during which time the customer is left with no mobile connection.
•    Vodafone will not guarantee that the credit on the pre-paid account will be carried forward once the number is reactivated. (I had just under Rs 1000 + a 3G data pack)
•    It has taken me 3 hrs of my time to try to sort this out with Vodafone (First on the phone, and then at the store), and 36 hrs later the new SIM has not yet been activated.

Given that many of those affected like myself will suffer direct financial loss from lost business plus the time out of our work schedule to get this sorted at the store. I expect Vodafone should provide some sort of compensation.

Does anyone know how this can be escalated,
- file a complaint with TRAI?
- is there a Consumer Rights body?
- legal action?

I am also going to sent an email with this pic to the mtnl so called babus so that they can see what the hell is going on in my society.

Airtel speed sucks and they have fup but atleast in my society they have a decent box installed with proper wiring. Here you can see the MTNL wiring and the box does not even has a close lid.

MS staff

There was a pilot flying a small single engine charter plane, with a couple of very important executives on board. He was coming into Seattle airport through thick fog with less than 10m visibility when his instruments went out. So he began circling around looking for landmark. After an hour or so, he starts running pretty low on fuel and the passengers are getting very nervous. Finally, a small opening in the fog appears and he sees a tall building with one guy working alone on the fifth floor. The pilot banks the plane around, rolls down the window and shouts to the guy "Hey! Where am I?" To this, the solitary office worker replies "You're in a plane." The pilot rolls up the window, executes a 275 degree turn and proceeds to execute a perfect blind landing on the runway of the airport 5 miles away. Just as the plane stops, so does the engine as the fuel has run out.

The passengers are amazed and one asks how he did it. "Simple" replies the pilot, "I asked the guy in that building a simple question. The answer he gave me was 100 percent correct but absolutely useless, therefore that must be Microsoft's support office and from there the airport is just a while away."

Is Windows a virus?

No, Windows is not a virus. Here's what viruses do:
They replicate quickly Okay, Windows does that

Viruses use up valuable system resources, slowing down the system as they do so okay, Windows does that

Viruses will, from time to time, trash your hard disk Okay, Windows does that, too

Viruses are usually carried, unknown to the user, along with valuable programs and systems Sigh... Windows does that, too

Viruses will occasionally make the user suspect their system is too slow (see 2) and the user will buy new hardware Yup, that's with Windows, too

Until now it seems Windows is a virus but there are fundamental differences: Viruses are well supported by their authors, are running on most systems, their program code is fast, compact and efficient and they tend to become more sophisticated as they mature

So, Windows is *not* a virus

New Locality Broadband Crisis. Help!

Posted: 13 Dec 2013 08:25 AM PST

I've been struggling to find a broadband connection here in Mukherjee Nagar (110009). My apartments (DDA) are relatively new - that may be a reason why I can't find a broadband connection. :\
All I am asking for is a ~1Mbps connection for under 1K per month.

My attempts have been futile so far. Paid MTNL an advance amount of 500 already about 6 months back. No word from them after paying them the advance amount.
Tried contacting Tikona - filled in their form online, also called their customer care. No response whatsoever.
Other ISP plans haven't convinced me to contact them. I've been considering IPTV by Airtel, but read about degradation of their services.

Please suggest some ISPs that can give me an affordable plan and a good service, specifically for my area.

Thanks.

Ashes 2013-14, T20Is & ODIs

Posted: 13 Dec 2013 07:33 AM PST

http://www.espncricinfo.com/the-ashes-2013/content/current/story/644797.html

Mickey Arthur has been sacked as Australia's head coach less than three weeks before the start of the Ashes. Cricket Australia is yet to officially announce the decision but the chief executive James Sutherland and general manager of team performance Pat Howard are due to hold a press conference in Bristol on Monday morning (UK time) to confirm the move.

Darren Lehmann, the successful Queensland coach, is considered a leading contender to replace Arthur at short notice. Lehmann is in England having just finished a tour as mentor of the Australia A outfit and has won rave reviews for the tough and somewhat old-school approach he has taken with Queensland since he was appointed in 2011.

But whatever the case, the axing of Arthur has left the Australian camp in a shambles on the eve of the Ashes campaign. The squad was due to meet in Taunton on Monday ahead of their first tour game against Somerset, with some of the players having been part of the Australia A squad, some having been playing in the Champions Trophy and others having been warming up in county cricket.

The traditional Boxing Day Test returns to South African shores for the 2013-14 season with India scheduled to play the first of three Tests in the home summer. CSA cancelled the fixture last season and opted to play three T20s against New Zealand over the festive period instead in the hope of attracting bigger in-stadium audiences. Although the matches were sell-outs, there was a public outcry about the lack of a Test match and with India visiting this season, the administrators have reinstalled the fixture and handed it back to its usual home, Kingsmead in Durban.

When I put the sim first time in the mobile I received three APN settings, one for browsing their portal which is Tata Docomo Dive In, one for MMS and one for all other activities which is Tata Docomo Internet. But most of the time my mobile is not able to connect to the Tata Docomo Internet APN which is for general propose, but some times when it does connects i get good speed and able to access internet normally. But I can connect to the other APN Tata Docomo Dive In without a problem which is for accessing their portal but with Tata Docomo Dive In setting I'm not able to access internet through any apps like facebook, opera mini, maps and etc. I tried calling customer care but it turned out to be no use :( I think Docomo is trying to cheat people by offering cheap net plans which is of no use... Any solutions??? Or anyone else facing such problem?
