Upgraded to BBG Combo ULD 1425, Can't get BSNL to upgrade speed

Posted: 17 Nov 2013 02:32 AM PST

Hello Everyone,

I was on BBG Combo ULD 800 & I upgraded to BBG Combo ULD 1425 in Oct. Plan was changed & portal reflects my plan but there is no improvement in speed. I have gone to exchange multiple times but they say that they are not responsible for speed, I should go to the main office & file a complaint there. Which I did but there is no response since then. also raised a complaint in portal, but it gets set to "RESOLVED".

Its more than a month but my modem still syncs at 2048/512kbps. Now, how to I get these bsnl idiots to increase the speed as per the plan subscribed?

BSNL network can collapse at anytime

Posted: 17 Nov 2013 02:30 AM PST

Sources said that BSNL's MPLS network has noticed traffic load of up to 80 per cent on the network in its peak hour on its core network, whereas typical loading should not exceed more than 50 per cent of its rated capacity

NEW DELHI, INDIA: Overloaded MPLS network, on which, data traffic of many mission-critical applications of the country runs, can collapse at anytime. This collapse of network will hit badly the broadband services of BSNL, mobile broadband being delivered through 3G network of BSNL and MPLS-VPN network or leased circuit line.

This breakdown of BSNL Network will put off various government services and major part of defense communication network. There are more than 20,000 enterprise customers that rely on MPLS-VPN service offered by BSNL to run their mission-critical applications. This includes mostly banking and financial institutions and organization such as top nationalized banks, oil and gas companies as also companies of other sectors.

As a result, banking operations such as transactions through ATM and core banking processes, transactions on petrol pumps and many other services crucial for day-to-day life of people and businesses across the country can come to a halt.

CIOL has learnt from some reliable sources that BSNL's MPLS network has noticed traffic load of up to 80 per cent on the network in its peak hour on its core network whereas IP technology does not permit such high overload, due to IP packet collisions at such higher loading. Typical loading should not exceed more than 50 per cent of its rated capacity.

"Data travels on IP network in form packets. In layman terms, the situation of core network is like over-load traffic on road. If there is heavy traffic, the speed of vehicles slows down. In case there are accidents in this traffic, all the vehicles stop. Similarly, there are too many data packet collisions in BSNL's core MPLS network at such higher loading. Therefore data speed on BSNL network on many occasions becomes very slow adversely affecting broadband Internet," said a BSNL official who did not want to be named.

The BSNL's rated network capacity to handle traffic load of more than 300 Gigabit is very much underutilized due to wrong planning and inconsistent procurement policies, claimed the official. BSNL's MPLS core network has about 200 node equipment throughout the country, which comprises core, edge and access networks connecting users in various telecom circles and associated district head quarters of the country.

These 200 MPLS node equipment, using about 400 long distance media links, are getting connected to each other. With this arrangement of what is called as mesh connection, technology should provide transfer of traffic load from one to other incessant flow of data packets.

But, with such high overloading of BSNL's MPLS network on some paths, coupled with frequent breakdowns due to OFC cut and failure of some node equipment in its long distance network, the situation is becoming worse.

"We have high capacity optical fibre cables everywhere, but we don't have the capacity in node equipment to connect efficiently with each other because of irregular procurement process of critical MPLS equipment," said the official.

The links that are frequently getting overloaded and at high risk are Indore-Mumbai, Ahmedabad-Mumbai, Lucknow-Indore-Mumbai, Lucknow-Nagpur-Mumbai, New Delhi-Mumbai, Jaipur-Mumbai, New Delhi-Bangalore, New Delhi-Chennai and Jalandhar National Internet backbone.

The expansion plan of this MPLS core network was seriously upset by the internal differences between very senior officials in BSNL Head Quarters, claimed the official.

According to some BSNL officials, the nodes in core MPLS network are connected with each other through mostly Cisco equipment. These equipment are currently underutilized to the extent of one tenth of their rated capacity and an easy upgrade can be done by adding interface cards on these equipment. However, as per officials information, with the interoperability issues with these equipment, only Cisco can provide such additional interface cards required for upgradation of this network.

The BSNL official further alleged that taking benefit of monopoly due to interoperability issues, Cisco vendors are quoting high prices for such interface cards comparable to the equipment itself.

CIOL made attempt to reach Cisco on this non-interoperability issue but no comments or clarification was received by the time this report went online.

"There is pressure on senior officials in southern telecom project to finalize this tender in favour of a particular vendor," further alleged the official.

Contrary to this claim, another senior official of southern telecom, BSNL who is closely involved with the tender, denied such allegations.

"The tender was canceled because the shortlisted vendors could not meet some eligibility and technical criteria. Cisco is original equipment manufacturer for only one of six vendors that were shortlisted. We have no issues relating to financial bids and there are no external pressures for favoring any particular vendor," further said the official.

This official also mentioned that the tender will be re-floated within a week and with some relaxation in eligibility and technical criteria.

"We urgently need to expand our IP MPLS network. We are going to float this tender within this week with some relaxation in the tender norms," said the STP official.

When contacted by CIOL for a clarification pertaining to this issue, BSNL CMD Gopal Das said he did not feel that the BSNL network is overloaded. He also added that at the moment he is not aware of the tender floated by the department for the procurement of equipment to expand the network.

ACTIVATION OF EVDO on NORMAL CDMA SIM

Posted: 17 Nov 2013 01:56 AM PST

Hi all there I want to ask is there someone who has activated BSNL EVDO services on a Normal CDMA Sim? I have bought a second hand BSNL Teracom U-500 data card and I am going to buy a CDMA sim to activate EVDO services. So do I need to go through any process or just slide-in SIM and start using EVDO? I asked a person on this forum he is able to connect to only 1X mode.

A short review

Posted: 16 Nov 2013 11:23 PM PST

This is a short review of Nextra fiber to the home (ftth) broadband for anyone else wondering whether they should take the plunge.
I had earlier thought to wait for a week and then post but seeing how i had time on my hands and how stable and smooth everything is going I am doing it now, will post any negative developments here if they do occur.

Minimum speed offered is a fast 10mbps, i have subscribed to 10mbps 80GB FUP @ 1899 as going further up was mostly a waste for me with just 5 internet sharing devices, with most of the heavy lifting being done by the desktop.
An awesome difference from adsl is upload and download speeds are nearly the same..

Post FUP is a manageable 512kbps up and down...something i griped about a lot with airtel with its 256kbps.
A minor detail is that the fup data is calculated on a prorated basis-Even though i subscribed on the 30th, my billing cycle is 20/19 and the data in my balance was 53.xxGB and not 80 which was to be used till the 19th.
There would also probably be monthly fluctuation for the 30/31/28 days (unlike airtel with constant 80GB).

I was on airtel bb for the last 5 years with speeds progressing from 256kbps to 512 to 2mbps to the final 4mbps (when 8mbps suddenly became feasible for my area faced with competition from nextra) for the last month of its usage.
Airtel was much better than what i had been used to before, but with its own often deeply irritating flaws and crappy experiences. It will not be missed .

Installation

Fiber had already been installed upto my house leading upto an ericsson modem which has outputs to a lot of stuff, the society intercom being one of them.

Installation was just a matter of connecting the ethernet cable to my own WiFi router, registering this router's MAC with nextra (something that needs to be done again if you change your router), and setting the internet connection mode to DHCP.
The tech exec was quick to show up and the connection was up and running within 18 hours of document collection.

You immediately receive a password for the nextraworld website on your registered mobile number.

Initial Issues

Websites sometimes would fail to load and show up as a blank page instead, a deeply irritating issue which will scare you to make any sort of financial transactions with the connection (even though i know there are safeguards in place).
The exec was helpful enough to troubleshoot and gave an assurance it will be fixed within the day. Posted about this on another thread.

The issue seemed to originate with nextra's banner ad injection on webpages sometimes. It was being used to show the customer promotional offers and other information for the connection. Something that I did not like one bit.

Called up the cust care, the operator was quick to understand my problem and did not deny the practice or give any mindless reason like malware. Assured that it would be forwarded to the backend and be deactivated.

Sure enough I received a call from the backend from a well spoken exec and he confirmed my request for disabling this 'feature' a final time and that was the last I saw any injections or that issue of websites not loading.

It has been smooth sailing ever since.

General usage

Pings

I am not an online gamer, I am content with single player mode Dirt 3  so pings are not a very big issue for me.

They are better than airtel, unlike what i stated before in another thread when i hadn't tested so thoroughly.

Below are some comparative shots for a general idea-

87310429.png  87310372.png

87310532.png  87310506.png

87310561.png  87310602.png

87310723.png  87310654.png

Speeds

Speed is not very noticeable for lighter websites, though 1080p youtube now plays effortlessly and switches seamlessly to this mode and bitmeter reports full 10mbps when doing so. Something that is very important for me and that rarely happened with airtel.

A 1080p youtube screenshot with bitmeter graph.

yt_zps5a2a5bbe.png

Uploading is a similar story, dropbox uploads are speedy as well using nearly all of the bandwidth.
Torrents from IPT yield full speed of 1.1 to 1.2MBps which i use a lot for tv shows (I don't abide by copyright laws for them ).

Capture_zpsa06d04e6.png

3009123699.png

Stability

The connection is stable as ever but can only comment on this after some time.
I have the modem and router hooked up to an APC home UPS i had lying around uselessly to avoid a disconnect in the time it takes for the society gensets to kick in.
However, I have yet to see its results, the airtel connection would not drop with this setup, not so sure about fiber.

Despite the earlier hiccups nextra did live up to my expectations. Airtel was very cooperative for a change for registering my disconnection request, and it would be done so within the week. Adios airtel.

Bottom line: I can never go back to adsl again!

DishTV SD Recorder

Posted: 16 Nov 2013 09:46 PM PST

Thinking to buy a DishTV SD Recorder. They say its just 1000 for existing customers. Anyway, is there any alternative? I'm also looking for a alternative DTH.

Also, share your experience of the recorder. I'm exhausted of changing channels with 3 digit numbers, and with the blank channels in between. I hope the recorder box will have a good conditioned Favorites option, because the current favorites in traditional old STB disappear when rebooted and also there are some problems using it.

No 5.1 Audio in HD channels

Posted: 16 Nov 2013 09:35 PM PST

One of the many reasons why I have subscribed for Videocon d2h was their 5.1 audio in HD channels.
I was enjoying 5.1 audio in Star Movies HD and Star world HD channels till Dec 2011.
But for the past one month there is no 5.1 audio.

When I checked with the customer care, their response is not encouraging. They simply said, they may provide 5.1 audio at a later stage, but are not committing any dates.
The worst part is, I have already paid my yearly subscription and they are refusing to refund any money if I cancel my subscription.

So, please think twice before going for Videocon d2h and that too going for yearly payment.

Anyone using Karbonn A30 ?

Posted: 16 Nov 2013 09:03 PM PST

Anyone here using Karbonn A30 mobile phone ? I am looking for a phone with big screen but small price to be used dedicatedly as a video player on the go.
I know it has lower resolution for the giant 5.9" screen and all but if anyone here is using it themselves please give your opinions.
I know it is discontinued but I think I can find used ones on Olx Quikr etc.

EMV enabled credit cards now mandatory in India‽

Posted: 16 Nov 2013 11:52 AM PST

1.) All the new Debit or Credit card issued by banks will allow usage in India only. If the customer wants carry out international usage, the cards will have a EMV chip embedded on the card and will pin enabled.

2.) For existing Debit and Credit card customers, the issuing bank will need to convert the normal cards (which have traditional magstrip) into EMV chip and pin enabled (this will be one for users who have used the card internationally atleast once). The process will needs to be completed by June 30th 2013.

3.) Banks will put a threshold limit on international usage beyond which users will not be able to spend. The limit will be decided by Bank based on the risk profile of user. This process will needs to be completed by June 30th 2013.

With all international cards now being enabled for EMV Chip and pin, it will not be possible to use them online ( this is extra layer of security, where user will have to input pin number after usage of card) as most of the online merchants will not have a facility to input pin during process of payment authentication.
