Is S3 a good buy now?

Posted: 01 Nov 2013 02:26 AM PDT

A friend is considering S3 as her next purchase. I tried recommending N4 but I don't think she will like it. Thanks to its camera and the fact that she loves clicking pics. And loads of them.

Is it a still a good buy? Should I recommend or is there a better option at this price range?

Headphones for Rs 2000

Posted: 01 Nov 2013 01:27 AM PDT

Well my sennheiser headphone have gone kaput and i am saving for nexus 5, so don't have much cash in hand.

Want to buy a decent headphone for max of 2000 bucks. Will use it almost exclusively music. I know genres don't matter for lower-mid level headphone, but i mostly listen to metal and rock. So clarity is more important than deep bass.

Airtel launches IPTV with HD Channels...experience?

Posted: 01 Nov 2013 01:23 AM PDT

Airtel has launched the IPTV with HD Channels just last month however the biggest setback / disappointment is that the existing customers cannot subscribe to the HD Channels. The scheme is only available for new acquisitions...which is really sad. The cost of a new HD IPTV set top box along with a free wife router is Rs 3500 (installation charges) and the HD plan will cost Rs 599/month (though there are only 12 HD channels at this time...hope they add more soon.)

I was forced to cancel by earlier IPTV + broadband connection and took a new HD IPTV + broadband connection. Received a HD STB (obviously much different than my earlier STB). The picture and sound quality is much better....I guess thanks to the new better STB and HDMI output. The STB menu / interface is really good (not like the old one) and it very responsive and fast (unlike the earlier IPTV which was very sluggish.)

Overall if you really want HD channels along with HDMI output then it is worth the trouble to disconnecting your existing connection and buying a new one for Rs3500/-.....else stick to your existing connection.

ACT Broadband Bangalore Reviews

Posted: 01 Nov 2013 01:11 AM PDT

Hello Readers,

My name is Vivek Sinha Anurag and i am going to post some "great" work shown by Act Broadband.

I applied for ACT Broadband 5 Mbps plan [its having cap value of 35GB after that speed will reduce to 256 kbps] by calling their customer care on 16th Aug 2011. I was surprised to see their lightening fast response as the representative came to my doorstep the very next day and on 17th Aug 2011 Mr Ashitt O.S. collected the money and documents and told me that withing 5 days i will get my connection and i even got sms confirmation that my request no is 142263.

Now the real story started. Even after 6 days no one ever bothered to check my request so i called customer care [ 080-42840000] to remind them and i was told that i will get it withing next 2 days. I waited for next 2 days and called them again.

I was surprised to learn a new technical term from them that they are "Uploading network" hence its taking time and soon i will get my connection. Since my work was getting affected because of their delay i applied for a BSNL connection too. Now today is 5th September and i am still waiting for the connection and to my surprise i got the BSNL broadband last week.

I tried escalating this matter and asked the customer care for any high level contact and they said that i need to mail helpdesk@acttv.in. I emailed them but i got no response.

Please note some points regarding ACT broadband before applying ACT broadband
1. They dont have nodal officer/appellate authority [against TRAI rules and i have already escalated this matter to TRAI officials with the help of pgportal.gov.in]
2. They have a customer base of 2500 users in bangalore and they are not able to manage even this small number.
3. They DO NOT PROVIDE STATIC IP [even if they claim to do so]
4. Their customer care service is useless. All you will losse is your balance by talking to them
5. They can "Upload network" [You can imagine the understanding capability of their technicians]
6. They are fast in collecting money but lazy in delivering service

Final conclusion: To be on safe side stay away from them else you will suffer like me. Morning shows the day and even before using their service i am suffering. Don't know what will happen when i get the connection and i face any problem that time.

Reliance Mobile to offer Apple iPhone 5s and 5c on contract for free/discounted pricing!

Posted: 01 Nov 2013 01:00 AM PDT

http://www.readability.com/articles/xultiac6

The telecom company will offer unlimited voice calls, SMS and 3G data for a fixed monthly fee ranging between Rs 2,500 and Rs 2,800. The subscriber will be locked in to RCom's network under a two-year contract. Under the scheme, the 16 GB iPhone 5c, priced without subsidy at Rs 41,900, will be available for a monthly fee of Rs 2,500 while the 5s, priced at Rs 53,500, will be on offer for around Rs 2,800 a month. The 32GB version will come with an upfront fee of Rs 10,000 in addition to the monthly charges. The 64GB model, priced at Rs 71,500 off the shelf, will be on offer for an upfront fee of Rs 18,000.

So, basically... 16GB models for free. 32GB model for 10K. 64GB model for 18K.

The Blacklist

Posted: 01 Nov 2013 12:53 AM PDT

Raymond "Red" Reddington, one of the FBI's most wanted fugitives, surrenders in person at FBI headquarters in Washington, D.C. He claims that he and the FBI have the same interests: bringing down dangerous criminals and terrorists. Reddington will cooperate, but insists that he will speak only to Elizabeth Keen, a rookie FBI profiler. Keen questions Reddington's sudden interest in her, though he claims that Keen is very special. After the FBI brings down a terrorist he provided information on, Reddington reveals that the terrorist is only just the first of many. In the last two decades, he made a list of criminals and terrorists he believes the FBI can't find because they didn't know they exist and that they matter the most. Reddington calls it "The Blacklist".

User Review: Google Nexus 4 16GB

Posted: 01 Nov 2013 12:41 AM PDT

Posted Image

So I have finally managed to grab this phone, all thanks to a friend of mine in US who was able to get one for me for $420. I was really frustrated with manufacturers (Motorola!) screwing the customers by backing out of promised OS updates and I had pledged that my next phone would be a Nexus for sure. The phone is really a steal for the price it’s selling for. It has a premium feel to it when we hold it (sans the poetic borderline bumper). The display I feel is very good, coming from my Motorola Electrify with a crappy pentile display. The glittering back glass with the Nexus logo in silver is really a visual treat, the only reason for me getting a bumper instead of a case. The hardware revision of my device is 11 and I am not having any common issues reported by various Nexus 4 users especially on hardware revision 10 devices i.e. buzzing earpiece, distorted sound from earpiece and speakers, yellow tint on screen after using it for longer periods, rattling sound, creaky microUSB port etc.

Coming to the software part, the android version that it came with is 4.2 but as soon as I connected to a Wifi network for initial setup, it prompted me about a software update available and it updated itself to 4.2.1. I have already unlocked the bootloader and rooted the device as I’m lazy to install more than 130 apps, where Titanium Backup helps a lot. I have not installed a custom recovery yet as I suppose we won’t be able to install updates pushed by Google. The lockscreen widgets are cool too. The GPS gets a fix in less than 10 seconds, which is really good as my previous phones took more than 30 – 50 seconds to get a fix. I tried Android Beam/NFS with a friend having S3 and it worked without issues too. The OS is very polished and very snappy and there is hardly any lag noticed while using different apps. I was amazed to see the level of multitasking abilities of this device. Switching between apps is ‘maska’. The only thing I’m missing are the notification toggles like Cyanogenmod, which I was addicted to. Although the double finger swiping menu thingy serves a bit, still I would have loved notification toggles.

The call quality is better than my Motorola Electrify, something which I didn’t expect. The sound on the earpiece is very loud at full volume and I had to reduce it. On my Electrify it was always on maximum volume. The speaker is also loud enough but the sound is suppressed when the device is lying on a flat surface, still easily audible though. The sound from earphones is descent while using stock audio player but I use Poweramp which provides a much better sound quality. The network reception is also good enough, didn’t notice any issues yet.

Now the gaming part, I installed Asphalt 7:Heat just to test the GPU capabilities and played it for around 15 – 20 minutes and I didn’t notice any frameskips, uninstalled it as I’ve completed it already. In NFS Most Wanted I was able to notice some minor frameskips here and there, which happened probably because of the early thermal throttling bug which is yet to be fixed. The device does get warm while playing games and while using internet on 3G.

I am yet to test the camera properly as I hardly use it. Tried Photosphere but was not successful in getting a proper result. I think it requires practice.

The battery life is pretty average, again something Google would probably fix in the next update. Some users have reported better backup after flashing some custom kernels with undervolting capabilities, available on XDA, something I won’t be trying so soon. I get around 24 hours backup from 100 to 5% based on my usage. It may improve as this is just the second day. I was getting around 30 hours on my Motorola Electrify with a Tegra 2 and 1700mah battery. I was expecting at least similar battery backup.

I also have not benchmarked it as I don’t care. But if anyone wants me to do it, please let me know. If anyone wants me to check anything specific, I would happily oblige.

Apologies for bad quality pics, friend has taken my camera. This is taken using my Motorola Electrify.

The biggest post by me on IBF. Phew!!!

Posted: 01 Nov 2013 12:19 AM PDT

I am using Beam Internet connection with speed of 1 mbps in Hyderabad. I will upgrade to 4 mbps or 10 mbps by next month.

My Objective is to share the Beam Internet through wireless/Wifi to my Android/BB Phones and ethernet to desktop.

At present I am able to connect only one by plugging in directly the RJ45 of the Beam cable to the ethernet port of PC.

what is the hardware/Wireless Router that i have to buy..... Am using the desktop which is not wifi capable .

will there be a problem to configure wireless router with desktop pc which is not wifi capable . If yes , how do i solve it???

Am not tech savvy...... am little poor in tech words...... and suggest me wireless routers under Rs. 1500/-.........

The Beam broad band connection procedure:
Connect the RJ45 jack to the ethernet port of the computer.
Open the broser.
A dynamic IP gets assigned to the computer and a login screen pops up where we enter the uesr name and password.

How to connect Beam cable Broadband to a wireless router

Posted: 31 Oct 2013 10:58 PM PDT

Hi All,
This is my first post and I would like to congratulate all the member's and the Administrators for making this forum so interesting.

I recently shifted from BSNL broadband to Beam Internet connection.
Earlier I used to connect BSNL to D Link DSL-G604T model ADSL wireless router . The internet was shared simultaneously to Desktop through ethernet and Laptop through wireless from the the router.

My query is in two parts. Objective is to share the Beam Internet in a similar fashion as above through wireless to laptop and ethernet to desktop.

At present I am able to connect only one by plugging in directly the RJ45 of the Beam cable to the ethernet port of PC or Laptop.

Q1) Can I share beam cable internet using my existing ADSL wireless router?
Q2) If not what is the additional hardware I need to purchase? Is there a way to connect the beam cable connection to a regular wireless router and distribute? Alternatively will installing two LAN cards on my desktop and bridging them solve the problem?

The Beam broad band connection procedure:

Connect the RJ45 jack to the ethernet port of the computer.
Open the broser.
A dynamic IP gets assigned to the computer and a login screen pops up where we enter the uesr name and password.

Query: Can I do the same by connecting the cable to a wireless router.
I will buy one if it is confirmed. The Beam technical support does not inspire confidence.
Please help.

Thanks
Jagdish

Remember to reset your connection before midnight on last day of the month!

Posted: 31 Oct 2013 10:56 PM PDT

Since today was the last day of the billing cycle, I have my downloads on since early morning. I do not want this usage to end up getting counted in next month's cycle because the session continued past midnight.

Should I reset my modem before midnight tonight?

I lost around 4GB data on Airtel Broadband last year which they refused to add back to my account which basically got me to dump them permanently.

MTNL VDSL Installation queries

Posted: 31 Oct 2013 10:53 PM PDT

I'm a MTNL triband user and thinking to shift to VDSL.

Have some queries:

1. What are the installation charges including the set up, the wiring and the one-time deposits?

2. Is it necessary to keep a telephone or can I get rid of it as nobody uses land-line here. If I cannot get rid of it, then what's the monthly charge for the telephone?

3. What is the monthly charge for the VDSL wireless router?

Posted: 31 Oct 2013 09:33 PM PDT

Hey guys, needed some help regarding setting up my wifi.

I hav a Dlink wifi router DIR-524

Used to use it on my old Fivenet connection, however due to some issue had to change to hathway.

The engineer managed to setup the connection, however he was'nt even ready to help me out with setting up my wifi.

I've put the router(wifi) on DHCP mode and connected to the modem. (resetted the modem too)

Already called hathway customer care telling them to release my ip / unbind. However the internet still wont connect.

Any help would be appreciated.

*The internet does connect when plugged directly into the PC.

TP-Link TL-WR740N configuration for Hathway Broadband

Posted: 31 Oct 2013 09:27 PM PDT

Hi Guys, I recently got a Hathway connection. I bought a TP-Link TL-WR740N router separately as it available for Rs. 890/- on amazon.in (who delivered it to me in 18 hours!!!) whereas the provider was charging me Rs. 2000/- for it. So this was clearly a good decision but now I am stuck with configuring the router :(:( It obviously did seem quite straight forward which is why I thought I would do it myself. I have chosen PPPoE and entered the right username and password I went into the advanced section in the WAN section and provided the service name provided to me. The problem is the router is not getting connected to the internet. When I check the system log on the router it shows me a bad username and password. I have rechecked the credentials and they work fine for me over Ethernet So I know that is not the problem. Can someone tell me if I am missing something.

Felipe Massa leaving Ferrari at the end of current season

"From 2014 I will no longer be driving for Ferrari," the driver said in a post on Instagram and Twitter. "I would like to thank the team for all the victories and incredible moments experienced together.

"For next year, I want to find a team that can give me a competitive car to win many more races and challenge for the Championship...," he added.

LOL.

RBR signs Vettel for 2009

Thursday, 17 July 2008 13:21

Red Bull Racing has confirmed that it has signed Sebastian Vettel to partner Mark Webber in its 2009 driver line-up.
A vacancy opened up at the Milton Keynes-based squad following David Coulthard's decision to retire at the end of this season, and Vettel has been widely tipped for promotion from Red Bull's 'B' team Toro Rosso.
However there has also been speculation that RBR was trying to entice double world champion Fernando Alonso away from Renault, but the Spaniard remains non-committal about his plans for next year and has been linked to a move to Ferrari in 2010.
Team principal Christian Horner said he was confident that, despite Vettel's youth and relative inexperience, the 21-year-old German was the right choice.
"We are delighted that Sebastian will be joining us next year," said Horner.
"With David Coulthard announcing his retirement as a Formula 1 driver a fortnight ago at the British Grand Prix, after careful consideration, it seemed natural to announce his replacement here at Sebastian's home race in Hockenheim.
"As he was already part of the Red Bull family, choosing Sebastian as Mark Webber's team-mate was not a difficult decision.
