freedom 1295 and 1395

Posted: 18 Sep 2013 03:03 AM PDT

i'm currently on tata's 512 kbps plan and i'm tired of high pings though the customer care service is excellent...net hardly goes down....but its too costly...
i'm a gamer so need a high speed internet...

i was thinking to switch to mtnl's freedom 1295 or 1395 plan ...speeds are amazing and in my budget...

can anyone give a few reviews about these plans?

does mtnl offer static ip with these plans or i'll have to get it separately ?

does mtnl block any websites or throttle anything?

and how are the pings that mtnl offers?

and i'm aware that mtnl's customer care is pathetic ...

Airtel Broadband: A Money Fleecing Scheme

Posted: 18 Sep 2013 02:56 AM PDT

In first quarter of the year 2013 India's average internet speed was 1.3 mbps; far below the speed of developed countries and to some extent even some of the developing countries. To prove my point anyone can read a few news articles on the internet, and compare India's average internet speed with that of other countries, and on that list India would appear at the bottom.

In most developed countries the minimum broadband speed set for ISP's (Internet service providers) to sell broadband internet plans are at minimum 1-2mbps. In January, 2011, TRAI(Telecom regulatory Authority of India) had raised the minimum broadband speed requirement to 512kbps, but malpractices still continue, I shall share an example here latter.

Internet holds a great potential and can mean business to many. Many people make their living out of internet, and internet means money. But corporates like Airtel (one of India's leading telecom provider), and its competitors try to fleece as much money as they can from users. I have to say it's not just Airtel Broadband (mention Airtel here on), but other ISP's too. I will take Airtel's example, as I am its customer and a disappointed and helpless one.

People use internet for different purposes, some are termed as heavy users, others as light users. Heavy users are those who use up most of the internet bandwidth. Problem for ISP's are these heavy users, who clutter their networks. The only way out is by providing them with limited bandwidth since no one else is able to use up the bandwidth meant for all. But this is not the correct way as adopted by companies like Airtel -adding more user to the network rather than upgrading their broadband infrastructure for being able to handle higher bandwidth.

So how does Airtel limit the bandwidth? By adding Fair usage policy (FUP) clause, or as most people call it F**k user policy. Worst so ISP's sell unlimited internet plans with FUP, in technical terms its limited to, because FUP is a limit itself.

There are many other unfair practices, but I will just tell you few of the problems I faced, and its something all future and current Airtel customers or other ISP's customer should know.

We have been using Airtel broadband services for very long, 5-6 years tops, really can't recall when exactly. It was a Rs. 649 plans at first 256Kbps internet speed, we had this plan for a 4-5years, even after discontinued selling that plan, as I was away, and parents were light users. Some time ago they changed the plan to Rs.849 (I can't recall the exact price, it was about this much), with 512kbps speed, and FUP limit of 8 GB, beyond which the speed used to go below 256kbps. This is totally an unfair practice, as TRAI has set a minimum broadband speed limit of 512kpbs.

Now once you are about to reach the said FUP limit, in my case 8GB, they you get a lot of pop up, saying you are reaching the FUP limit, and consider buying additional bandwidth, which thay call SmartBytes. So these pop-up just keeps coming, and spoils the internet experience. i.e. If I am on a skype call, the call is disrupted, etc. So Airtel is just nuisance to customer, and trying to fleece $$$$. I have read a few articles on people being charged wrongly for SmartBytes,I didn't happen to me. But I was charged twice for Airtel PC secure

So I did finally fell for it, I needed a better plan, Rs. 2599 for Rapid 175, with 8mbps internet speed. Well, it was great, 8mbps speed was just awesome, was downloading content at 1mbps speed, but the real downside was the upload speed, it was too less usually 60-80kbps, to upload content! Now that was really sad, I paid Rs 2500 for 8mbps plan, which gave me a content upload rate of 80kbps! At first I thought it was a mistake, so I checked with customer care, and all he could say was 'Airtel only guarantees download speed and not upload speed'. Frankly this is sh**, 8mpbs plan for this upload speed.

I manage a few website, and one of the larger one has 8gb data, which I download to my PC, as back up. So downloading usually takes 2-3 hours, now uploading that content back to the web server will take me more than 1 day. This is bad for business.

In the end all I can conclude is by saying Airtel and many other ISP's are not really upgrading their infrastructure, cluttering their network by adding more customers, fleecing money from the customer, and doing malpractices, etc. In time I hope these problems are addressed to, and TRAI is able to act on it, and work towards customers benefit and not towards the ISP's.

My intention here was not to defame Airtel or any organization, all I trying to educate the current and the future customer the problem that exists. Also leave you with a image, with details on average internet speed, and average price for it in various countries. This would give most of a bit of idea what we people are missing.

Frequent Disconnection / ADSL blinking Issue on MTNL Broadband

Posted: 18 Sep 2013 02:54 AM PDT

Hi,

I am a user of 849NU plan of MTNL Triband service since August based out of Navi Mumbai.

All of August, i was very happy to have a lovely connection and good speeds, with a pretty good tariff.
But now since the past 15 days I am suffering from very intermittent net connection.
Although I am connected to the internet, sometimes the webpages take ages to open, and never open, while at other times it opens instantly. Also downloading has the same pattern, sometimes I get very good speeds of upto 200 Kbps, while other times there is no download. Although all download sites show good Triband Speed, but it is the intermittent connection that is the problem.
This problem has crept up in the last 15 odd days, and I have tried everything but no change has been noticed.

Has anyone else faced a similar problem, and if yes, whats the work around. The people at MTNL classify this as a slow connection problem, but that is exactly not the issue, as I do get good speeds intermittently.

Somebody please help me.

Hathway HD Bangalore - how to subscribe for HBO premium channels

Posted: 18 Sep 2013 02:39 AM PDT

Hi,

I am a Hathway HD subscriber in Bangalore. Recently, HBO premium channels were shown free on both HD and SD.

Now the channels have gone blank as the free preview is over.

I have inquired about this by calling Hathway but no one able to give a clear answers to my questions. Not sure if anyone from this forum has heard anything from Hathway. If yes, please help. My questions were:

1) What are the rates of subscription for HBO premium channels in HD?

2) Can it be subscribed on a monthly, quarterly, yearly basis? Any discounts if done for a longer duration?

3) Who needs to be paid (Hathway or LCO) to access these channels?

The Hathway office is in Ulsoor which is far from my area where I live (HSR Layout) and is a pain to go there and make monthly payments.

Thanks,

Abhishek

Hathway HD Bangalore - HD access charges payment

Posted: 18 Sep 2013 02:36 AM PDT

Hi,

I live in Bangalore and have subscribed to Hathway HD. Recently, my first 1 year subscription got over and I was asked to pay Rs. 2200/- to Hathway Ulsoor office. I had to personally go there and make the payment though it is far from my place.

Is there any other way to make the payment - online? I inquired about it in the Ulsoor office and the person told me to register in hathway.com and make online payments.

I have tried registering with all possible permutations and combinations...but the site just doesn't register me. I am positive, I supplied my correct Customer number and other details but it gives an error message "invalid email" after I submit the form.

Anyone in this forum who has been able to successfully register can enlighten me?

Thanking you in anticipation.

Fast & Furious 7

Posted: 17 Sep 2013 11:52 PM PDT

OMG I'm waiting for this movie.

Around the time when Fast Five was hitting the home video market, reports surfaced about the next franchise installments, with rumors indicating that Jason Statham may be the next high profile star to join the franchise.

As it turned out, Brit actor Luke Evans nabbed the role Statham was thought to take initially and Fast & Furious 6 was shot by itself. According to today's big scoop from AICN, much of that initial plan may actually hold true.

According to their sources, at the end of Fast & Furious 6, when Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and Brian O'Conner (Paul Walker)'s team of stunt drivers successfully help out Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) in taking down Owen Shaw (Luke Evans) in exchange for their freedom, there's an additional scene that leads into Fast & Furious 7.

It may end up being a post-credits sequence much like the tease of Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) returning in the Fast Five button, but this one starts with an inside-car view of someone's hands on a steering wheel of a parked car, with Japanese voices coming though a police scanner in the vehicle. An external shot reveal it to be a custom reinforced Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

The scanner asks for all units to respond to a car chase between a black and orange Mazda RX-7 and a grey Nissan 350Z, and so the Mercedes books it in pursuit. We still don't see the driver but the Mercedes is running parallel on another street to the high-speeding Mazda and Nissan, before cutting left, onto the same road, and sideswiping the Mazda, flipping it as a result, with practically no damage to the Mercedes.

The mystery Mercedes stops and out steps… Jason Statham, as Ian Shaw, brother to Luke Evans' character. He walks up to the flipped over Mazda RX-7 and in it sits Han Seul-Oh (Sung Kang). That's right. The franchise has come full circle and merged with The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, director Justin Lin's first entry into the series (he's directed every installment since).

Mind blown? FYI, this isn't Jensen Ames Statham from Death Race or Frank Martin Statham from the Transporter series or Handsome Rob Statham from The Italian Job, this is Ian Shaw Statham from Fast & Furious, typecast car skills included.

We can therefore assume the grey Nissan is The Drift King Takashi's (Brian Tee) ride. Will Lucas Black return to the franchise as Sean Boswell? Hit me up on Twitter @rob_keyes and let me know if you dig this idea.

Microsoft acquiring Nokia (Devices and Services Divisions)

Posted: 17 Sep 2013 11:03 PM PDT

Confirmed now.

Nokia Corporation today announced that it has signed an agreement to enter into a transaction whereby Nokia will sell substantially all of its Devices & Services business and licence its patents to Microsoft for EUR 5.44 billion in cash, payable at closing. Nokia expects to book a gain on sale of approximately EUR 3.2 billion, and expects the transaction to be significantly accretive to earnings.

Subject to the closing of the transaction, Microsoft will acquire substantially all of Nokia's Devices & Services business, including the Mobile Phones and Smart Devices business units as well as an industry-leading design team, operations including all Nokia Devices & Services production facilities, Devices & Services-related sales and marketing activities, and related support functions. At closing, approximately 32,000 people are expected to transfer to Microsoft, including approximately 4,700 people in Finland. Nokia's CTO (Chief Technology Office) organization and patent portfolio will remain within the Nokia Group. The operations that are planned to be transferred to Microsoft generated an estimated EUR 14.9 billion, or almost 50%, of Nokia's net sales for the full year 2012.

Additionally, Microsoft will become a strategic licensee of the HERE platform, and will separately pay Nokia for a four year license. This revenue stream is expected to substantially replace the revenue stream HERE is currently receiving from Nokia's Devices & Services business internally. If the transaction closes Microsoft is expected to become one of the top three customers of HERE.

Take advantage of night unlimited 2am-8am

Posted: 17 Sep 2013 10:51 PM PDT

Since I am seriously compromised on FUP with BSNL and affordability of the BSNL plans, I was considering taking an additional connection 2Mbps for the night 2am-8am. Got the idea from someone else here. Was wondering if anyone has used it and how they schedule the downloads?

I have a timer plug, which I can make it turn on and off at 2:15 and off at 7:45am. So I can switch on the modem and router automatically. To this I should connect my NAS which should wake on lan and start downloading once the internet comes on. Only issue is my NAS has only one ethernet port and so if I need to use the second internet, then I need to figure out how the NAS can take IP from 2 routers between certain times...

Anyone done this successfully? Thanks for any ideas/suggestions.

I have a Micromax modem (MMX353G) and I want to sell it at low price BECAUSE this 3g Modem is ridiculous, THERE IS NO SETTINGS TO CHANGE DNS ADDRESS and it is worth to mention that it is an adware. It will always open Micromax home page.

Friends, instead of starting new thread for each news, I thought of opening a separate thread for F1 news. So, here I start...

Standardising Formula One machinery
Five-year FIA cost-culling plan revealed
15/10/08

A British newspaper has revealed the FIA's five-year plan to radically slash costs, with the body's president arguing Formula One has become 'unsustainable'.

The centrepiece of the package, to be discussed with the F1 teams' alliance FOTA next week in Geneva, is the standardisation of expensive car parts that add little to the show.

The London publication The Times claims that Bernie Ecclestone, the Chief Executive of F1's commercial rights holder, backs the Max Mosley-devised plan to 'dramatically' cut costs.

Among the measures is the introduction of a controversial standard engine design for 2010, additional energy recovery systems and fuel-efficient engines for 2013, and many 'common parts' for the chassis.

"We are completely open to new ideas," Mosley, albeit insisting that engines must be made available to small teams at a low cost, said in a letter to the team bosses.

An FIA spokesman said he will not comment prior to the meeting.

Tata SKY+ New DVR STB split wide open (The inside with photos :)

Posted: 17 Sep 2013 02:33 PM PDT

Well its a sturday and I didnt really have anything else today , woke up at 6am and there was no electricity , so I decided it was time to use the new TATA SKY + DVR STB in a diffrent way .

So I decided to open it up to see what they have hidden inside , what kinda upgrade we can try ourselfs to get more recording time , can we transffer the recorded videos to a PC ....and guys the answers were all positive!!!

Opening the Tata sky STB is one of the easiest experiments I have ever done (this may vary from person to person , opening your STB up causes your warranty to be void , so please do this at your own risk - this is not my responsibility nor is it the forums , but all I can say is its very hard to do something wrong and mess it up ) .

Opened up the 5 screws of the STB , one on each side and 3 at the back of the stb , this causes the upper lid of the STB to slide off , so once the screws are removed just gently slide the top of the STB open.

To see if this is possible connected this HDD to my PC :
Vola.... The file format is FAT 32 !!! so what you would ideally need to do is
Buy a new SATA - Desktop HDD - create one big partition and format it in FAT 32 and then connect it to the STB and it should simply work (I havent tried this yet , but will do it next week , but i dont have any doubts it will just work).

The good thing is in case you have recorded something important and you need to transffer to the PC you can do it this way (since the file system is FAT 32!!

Screen shots of the HDD connected to my PC :

After all this o just put back everything to gether , and switch on the STB and well everything just worked like nothing happened :)
Feedback appriciated!

Sony Play Station 2,

While I plan to list this item on Ebay/OLX soon, I just wanted to know what my friends on IBF would suggest.

I've got a PS2 (SCPH-9004CB) against some outstanding amount, the playstation 2 is sealed pack, and comes with bill (but in my name)

and is genuine, un-touched.

What should be the fair price I should be looking at ???

Thanks...........

Edit:

Flipkart lists the same for Rs.6830/-

Should I sell it for 5800, do I have a chance with giving 1000 off

Changed BSNL plan

Posted: 17 Sep 2013 12:03 PM PDT

So I was using BSNL 1350 Annual Plan (13500 + taxes), 4 mbps for 20 GB then 512 kbps, but BSNL has been hiking the costs

a. Rs.75 increase in plan

b. 11 months cost instead of 10 in case of annual plans

c. removal of 1% discount on online payment

d. changing to free calls from all network to only BSNL network

So my cost would be expected to go up from around 15k per annum to around 18k

Wanted to remove, but the other options are scarier & am a bit hesitant to go back to the only other service that was decent (Airtel) which is still equally costlier.

Hence, now when the time for the renewal of online payment came. I have decided to test waters first by switching to a monthly lower plan of 900 + taxes per month (expect cost to be 12k per annum, 2 mbps for 8 GB, 512 kbps beyond).

On the look out for other ISP options & may probably switch to the lowest plan possible (500/600 ones) while I test the new ISP.

So looking forward to recommendations of ISPs around Anna Nagar, Shenoy Nagar, Kilpauk, Kellys in Chennai

(Uptime is primary, reasonable speed & then cost would be the factors)

Reliance is ruled out & unless Hathway has improved a LOT in the last few years is ruled out as well...

The general cricket discussion thread

Posted: 17 Sep 2013 11:01 AM PDT

Why this thread?

So often, we have some random thought or point to make/discuss , and I personally sometimes skip it as I feel it is not worthy of a new thread & feel its unfair to hijack an existing thread...

Would recommend creating new thread for any big news & as usual we have threads for specific series/tournaments.. This is for something general random posts related to cricket...Kind of the Cricket Offtopic thread...

Will start with one post

Airtel offered me a new plan

Posted: 17 Sep 2013 10:47 AM PDT

Airtel called me today and said since I'd taken Smartbytes for 12gb last month, they wanted to offer 125 fup plan(80gb now) at the same speed(8mbps) for 50rs extra.

I also heard they are giving 3g at 2g rates in my area these days.

Is airtel on a PR improving spree? Anyone got offers like this?
