Whenever the powerless or the less powerful try to exercise it over the more powerful, they have always had to face the consequences of it. One thing about Internet is that it gives people a false sense of security. Since they are sitting inside the four walls, people think they are safe. Also people start having mob psychology... that they are a big group and so they are safe. When the Internet came to India, cyber laws were just not there. So people could do whatever they want on the Internet. Anyone could just go to any Internet booth or connection and create a fake id that provided the ultimate anonymity. Also Internet was not as popular as it is now. The result was that at that time, people could get away with whatever they wanted to do... a person could bring out the ultimate truth which he could not have otherwise been able to bring out... but also create bad reputations. However around 20 years later, everything is changed. The cyber laws are very very strict. They are designed to arrest just about anyone who uses the Internet, but only the authorities could decide on who is the innocent. The idea is not leave a loop hole for crime commiter, but the let the innocent go. However, the disastrous side effect is that it can be misused. There are plenty of ordinary people who still think they are anonymous on the Internet, but the truth is if the authorities really want to find somebody, it much more easier on the Internet than in the real world. Also I should say people take it that freedom of expression is absolute. They think because they have got freedom of expression, they can write anything and sometimes get carried away from the lines of decency. The problem is what is decent is different for different people... what is insult is different for different people... |
