The significance of the colour back is a subjective matter which is open to interpretation. It is often seen as representing something negative. While there are numerous varied possible reasons, arguably the most universally accepted rationalization is that night, in general, is experienced by people as both negative and dangerous. Another secondary reason is probably that stains are seen to be most noticeable as dark additions to light materials.

This prejudice manifests itself in good vs. bad dualism being linked with white and black. Even today, for instance, the phrase "black day" (or even week or month), is used in reference to sad or tragic times. Another instance would be English heraldry, wherein black signifies darkness, ignorance, misgivings and uncertainty.

Almost everyone has heard of Black magic, the evil kind of magic or a simple blacklist. However, it does hold positive symbolism in places such as 'Black Watch' being the senior Highland Regiment belonging to the British Army.

England v South Africa, 2nd NatWest ODI, West End : Hashim Amla faster than Viv Richards | Cricket Features | England v South Africa | ESPN Cricinfo

Review of the day

England had declined to utilise their one DRS opportunity when Hashim Amla, on 37, was trapped in front by Samit Patel - replays suggested the third umpire would have been obliged to adjudge the batsman out - but did use it when JP Duminy, on 4, was struck outside the line of leg stump by one from James Anderson. It meant that when AB de Villiers, on 22, edged an attempted switch-hit on to his shoulder and into the arms of Craig Kieswetter, England were unable to review the umpire's decision. Alastair Cook was proved correct five times out of nine when calling for reviews in the ODI series against Australia, but showed in this game that there is room for improvement with his use of the DRS.
Once again proves my point, that DRS is being used/viewed as a strategical tool rather than means to eliminate unlimited howlers which should have been its purpose in the first place

Stat of the day 1
During the course of his career-best ODI score, Amla became the fastest man to reach 3,000 ODI runs. To put his achievement in perspective, Amla reached the milestone in just his 57th innings, while the previous fastest batsman, Sir Viv Richards, took 69 innings. To beat Richards by any margin - let alone such a vast one - is testament to Amla's remarkable quality, consistency and adaptability.
Ironical. Considering he was thought to be not suited for the shorter format initially.
