Toward Liquid-Cooled Computers..

Posted: 01 Oct 2011 06:54 AM PDT

Tired of the dust bunnies sucked into your computer's air-intake grill? A new technique called superwicking might finally allow scientists to build liquid-cooled computers. Experts say the method could provide a better way to cool computer hardware and could help remove one of the biggest barriers to a new generation of high-powered microprocessors. And in the meantime, it could prove a boon to tiny fluid-based sensors.
Heat is an enemy of electronics. It cooks delicate components until they become brittle and prone to failure. And the more powerful a computer chip is, the more heat it generates. Until now, the only way to cool computer hardware has been with fans. But that technique generates problems of its own, including dust accumulation that can block air intakes and induce a figurative computer meltdown.

Optical physicists attempted to find out whether silicon chips could be cooled by water or other fluids. One challenge is that the chips are often mounted vertically inside a computer, so the coolant might have to flow uphill. A year ago, they achieved an effect called superwicking—by which the texture of a material forces water to flow upward—on metal surfaces by etching them using extremely fast, quadrillionth of a second, high-energy laser pulses. So they decided to try the same technique in silicon chips.

The result, is that the grooves, about 2 centimeters long and 100 microns wide, turned ordinary chips positively hydrophilic. The grooves attracted water molecules and wicked them straight up in defiance of gravity. The physicists say that they also conducted experiments with acetone and methanol and got the same results. That's good, because the technology probably would be used in a closed-loop system such as in a conventional air conditioner, with an evaporator, condenser, and fluid running across the hot, grooved surface and carrying away heat. If so, it would require a volatile coolant that evaporates quickly.

The research "represents a benchmark contribution" to the development of liquid-cooled computers and will pave the way for new materials applications created by ultrafast lasers, the technology could produce "exciting developments in silicon-based, lab-on-a-chip applications" in which microcomputers are combined with sensing arrays...

October 1 - National Mistakes Day (USA)

Posted: 01 Oct 2011 05:09 AM PDT

I knew that US people have days for all sorts of things. It seems but right that they have a day for mistakes: OCTOBER 1.
There is no need for any special day in India. It is a year long activity led by the Government!

Here is an article from the Creativity Portal on this:

October 1: National Make A Mistake Day!*
Did you know that October 1 is National Make a Mistake Day? Isn't that awesome? Imagine A WHOLE DAY devoted to sanctioned mistake-making that we get to be proud of!

So what mistakes are you going to make today? What guilt, shame, or frustration over not-being-perfect can you let go of? What intended gaffe will make you laugh? Let's celebrate our mistakes! And let's make 'em good!

To inspire your brazen mistake-making, this NewZine is littered with them! No actually, my perfectionism won't allow such recklessness, but here's a recent example of one of mine, synchronicitly synched with this forgiving celebration:

...So I decided to accept Tom Evan's invitation to chat casually about creativity for his Moments of Light podcast series. Now, Tom is a prolific contributor to Creativity Portal from the UK (see his new Flavours of Thought series), and from the very first moment I met him, I linked his name with the famous sausage/restaurant brand in the US. See the sign above — it naturally fits, right?

Well... as it turns out, I'm good at making sausage out of names in recorded interviews. BUT I'm also good at using my own mistakes learning experiences as humor fodder in creative expression. So, if you're the least bit interested in listening in on our conversation, witnessing my gaffe, and reading some self-reflective silly from me, it's all here.

The great news for me and recorded interviews is now the pressure's off. What a comic relief. Mistakes were made. And now more can easily follow.

Enjoy making your mistakes today. And tomorrow. And the day after. You're allowed to and in unlimited amounts. Let go of the pressure of trying to be perfect. Relax and laugh more. This is life — right here — in all its imperfect glory. Let's celebrate!

company recruitment Chance

Posted: 01 Oct 2011 03:37 AM PDT

Guys every company have their rules regarding recruitment chances like if anyone appeared for infosys test then he/she can apply again after 9 months only. But i am confused here. Suppose i have applied for infosys off campus and got the email for the test but i didn't went there for the test. Is that mean my chance has gone and i have to apply after 9 months??

From time to time many revolutionary technologies life span gets over.

Telephone, Typewriter, Cassette Player, Walkman, Pager.... List is endless. What you think are the things that we use today will no more be seen by the end of 2020.
