Hayai Broadband - Fair Usage Policy Posted: 10 Mar 2011 02:55 AM PST Sorry for bumping this thread after 2 months... Just having some nostalgia.. I noticed this: Quote: Mathew Carley - Not exactly. At the wholesale level, we pay a flat-rate for each multiple of 155mbit/s that we buy. But from the last-mile point of view, there is no point in putting a limit on speed if we put a limit on data transfer, that's the only part that Airtel needs to rectify. My proposal to them would be that the simply unleash the speed caps on any plan which has a limit on data transfer - rather than having 2 or 4mbit/s until 10 or 30 or 50 or 100GB, they could just have up to ADSL2+ speeds instead (and then apply the Fair Usage Policy as appropriate). It works in NZ, there is no reason it couldn't work for Airtel also - and if anyone can do it, they can. Real-world speeds here (despite being up to ADSL2+) are probably 5-10mbit/s depending on which urban area you live, but there are people like me who get 15 or more. With the way Airtel's DSL network is set up, I would expect that their users should get 20. Yes, that does mean that users could use up a 100GB cap in 1-2 days but at the end of the day, that's the user's problem, not Airtels, and they really need to start thinking about charging for larger units rather than per MB - just visiting certain websites these days (say, yahoo.com) can eat up 1MB. If 100GB is Rs5000 = Rs50/GB, then why is each extra GB going to cost 8 times as much? Twice as much is maybe OK but EIGHT TIMES? That's just ridiculous. If India had the equivalent of New Zealand's commerce commission, Airtel and every other ISP would be "eaten for breakfast". Perhaps next time you meet with them, let me know and we can have a conference call. Mind forwarding the excel sheet? I mean if Airtel's style of pricing is considered then the prices will then even be Rs 65-75 per gb(for the "comfort", and also they'll have to increase their Fair Usage Policy higher still, just like you have speed tiers, if you remove all tiers instead of the highest, not many people will take it, right?) at adsl2+ speeds instead of Rs 35-50 per gb, that will be a considerable increase and will result in a severe decrease in the number of customers (atleast in my opinion). Don't give them many ideas though.. or they'll accuse you of stealing their ideas after Hayai's launch. |

MTNL introduces new BILL-CAP based Circuit Breaker Plans Posted: 10 Mar 2011 02:46 AM PST In Tikona in CB 499 - free usage of 5 gb@ @MBps then Rs10 paisa per MB till your bill reaches Rs 999 then "net" is cut, otherwise the 799 has free usage of 8Gb @ 2Mbps after that 512kbps no disruption in services.(mUMbai) Any ways nice initiative to update their old plans and to attract further customers all at the expense of quality Regards |

CDMA Blackberry: Excellent Service----------------my foot Posted: 10 Mar 2011 02:34 AM PST Reliance Blackberry Services (CDMA) is down since last night 2 A.M. (started around 2A.M. of 10th March-2011) and i had a sleep-less night, taking laptop even to bathroom, cause I am alive only because of email flow. when i tried BB Customer care early morning, they had only CRAP and CANNED answers like 1). Let me check if you have a valid email ID saved, WTF, I work online 24x7 and I don't know if i added a email ID correctly 3 years back, when you idiot was not even on this Job. 2). you need to select home network, :madness: 3). you need to do hard reboot, battery pull, I said already did it 5 times, no, no do it now. 4). have you run diagnostic check, idiots don't even admit that there stupid crappy, ultra cheap set up is down. 5). after 7-8 tries, some senior say, there's a upgrade going on server and it will be completed around 3PM. WTF, are you training class 8th guys to handle enterprise level servers. One can bloody clone a server with 100 TB data to a entirely different server in this time frame, one can migrate his entire corporate network in this time frame and you own a damn data center but your guys are running a stupid update which takes more than 12 hours. you should close the crappy blackberry service and start a samosa shop. :madness: your plans are expensive, unreliable, and you people don't have a shame to be efficient when services are down. its 14 hours now, still the f**ing service is down. I better start saving money for my next blackberry which can take a GSM sim in its **S and i can move on, if the outage is such HUGE |

Posted: 10 Mar 2011 01:48 AM PST Vodaphone 3G launched in Chennai - Speed is good. http://www.speedtest.net/result/1193879408.png Since Iam a member of the BSNL 1 Mbs capped club ,seeing 3.97 Mbs brought tears to my eyes. Vodaphone sim- I bought casually few days ago as they were offering rs 52 talk time for Rs 10 ! hard to resist just a freebie. Then while watching cricket saw the Voda 3g advt and called 116. They told me Vodaphone 3G trials are going in chennai and Kovai and you can get it at the same price for GPRS existing plans for now during trial period! Sent "ACT 3G" by sms and immediate got a message that 3G will be on in a few hours. So subscribed Rs 14/3 days /250 mb GPRS plan thro the phone itself and browsed the net in pc for Vodaphone APN settings for Android and set it up in the phone. But when I saw "E" only and not "3G " ,removed the sim disappointed and re inserted my BSNL 3G sim as usual. Today to check what happened- I re inserted my Voda sim and Voila- 3G signal instantly. Typed speedtest.net in the browser and the site says "Free Android app for speed test- Down load ?" yes of course -I down load and launch the speed test app in the phone (Flash in Andriod works unlike Iphone) Was amazed to see 3.97Mbs speed. So just now went to the shop and re charged Rs 98/2 Gb /30 days GPRS plan to enjoy this 3G freebie for a week may be. By the way in Chennai Airtel and Aircel 3G already out of trials and offering firm data plans .(airtel's sucks) .By 15th march Idea and Voda 3G launching in chennai. So we will have plenty of choice apart from BSNL 3G! |

Dena Bank Makes Mistake, Fraudster Walks Away With Rs 42,500 Posted: 09 Mar 2011 10:55 PM PST When Dena Bank failed to verify forged signatures on a cheque for Rs 42,500 they made the mistake of simply accepting the cheque and making the payment allowing a fraudster to walk away with the amount. The first thing that would come to mind is, "what's the big deal about 45k when people and companies loose lacs and corers?" The big deal is that this 42,500 was not lost by one of those big MNC's or someone with lacs and lacs to spare. This money was lost due to the bank's failure to enforce security and procedure. Over time people have lost money to fraudsters because of the lack of procedural discipline followed by the banks. In the case of Dena Bank, Malad East, Mumbai; a man, pretending to sell Reliance Broadband connections for Rs 100 to senior citizens, entered the house of the victim. He even had the residents of the house fill forms and issue him a cheque for Rs. 100. He then proceeded to confound everyone with numerous requests. While everyone was busy with his request, he removed the cheque for Rs 100 from the cheque book. He didn't stop there; he even pulled out the blank cheque below it. After having gotten the blank cheque the perpetrator made out a self cheque, forged the signatures on it and approached Dena Bank, Malad East, for a withdrawal. The teller on duty at Dena Bank informed the person that the signatures were not matching. Hearing this, the perpetrator gave an excuse and went out for a few minutes. When he came back he had freshly forged signature on the cheque. When this signature also didn't match he repeated the exercise. What was remarkable here is that he repeated this exercise up to seven times before the bank finally cleared the cheque and made the payment. The bank employee responsible for the payment did suspect something but made the payment nonetheless. The bank never got wise as to why someone would go in and out of the bank seven times to re-do a signature instead of just getting the account holder in and having them sign the cheque again. When the bank was informed of the fraud, they carried out an internal investigation that led to the identifying of the teller who was responsible for making the payment on the cheque. They also informed the account holder that they had referred the problem to the local police station. Apart from this Dena Bank informed the account holder that they were willing to submit the cheque to a handwriting expert, who could verify that the signatures had been forged or not, provided the account holder bear the cost of soliciting such service. The questions this incident raises are that should the bank have really honoured the cheques? Shouldn't the bank have suspected something when the person kept going out again and again? Sources at Dena Bank claimed that they did call the account holder to confirm with them about the validity of the cheque but failed to receive a reply from them. Banks have certain security measures in place where in they check your photo id and match the signatures on the cheques to verify that it is genuine. They are also supposed to match the photo id produced, to the photo they have on record. The rules are that if the signatures don't match the cheque will not be honoured unless the bank can call up the account holder and confirm that they did issue the cheque in question. In this case the procedures were not followed and a mistake was made. This is not the first time something like this has happened. There is an e-mail, that has been doing the rounds, where someone, the victim had never even met, forged a photo id and got ICICI Bank to change the SMS banking number on the victims account. The fraudster went on to order a new cheque book and managed to withdraw a lot of money from the account via RTGS transfers to an account in Allahabad Bank and producing "self cheques" to withdraw money from the account. In this case the mistake that ICICI Bank made was to not verify the photo on the ID card produced by the perpetrator against the photo of the account holder that was on record with the bank. |
Business Oppurtunity: FIOS in large apartment complex Posted: 09 Mar 2011 10:47 PM PST I find it odd that most of the large apartments (with 1000 or more apartments) do not have a FIOS based broadband connectivity. Both Broadband charges and other Television/HD service delivery can be achieved via this model. Are there any ISP targeting such a service model. If so, please get in touch with me as I represent one such apartment complex in Bangalore (Marathahalli Area) and would like to discuss the possibilities in this regard. Thanks, Ravi +91 9845388115 |
India Broadband Forum Milestones Posted: 09 Mar 2011 10:45 PM PST The upward moving chart is more of the milestone graph (everytime we hit approx 10k....) & the zigzag is the posts/week chart - The number of users is not available in the data sent to me... Maybe admin can say if that is available..... Also guys do note that I am NOT a professional. I get to prepare some charts on a need basis sometimes.... and hence know some basic stuff... ---------- Post added at 11:33 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:18 AM ---------- Also this is a weekly report - so the milestone reaching week is an approx only. @rajm - The line-chart of posts/week can be replaced by a bar chart - but put a line chart out cos admin said so.... I will try to put a bar-one later... The milestone one... I had to manually filter records which were crossing each 10k threshold - A bar for that without the exact number is already available above.... No. of users is unfortunately not available for me to work on anything related to that I think you have mentioned this as an occupational hazard - maybe you can help us out better & we can come up with something better once admin is there to provide more details.. ---------- Post added at 12:15 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:33 AM ---------- Feb 2011 shows an upward trend again - Guess the reasons are 1. A very popular member(or should I say notorious) who had an eventful 2 month-stay in the forum 2. World Cup talk 3. Hayai discussion (from open letters to authenticity to FAQs to lengthy bickering) 4. 3G & HD-STB launches |

Vodafone EDGE/GPRS speed reduced after 3G launch? Posted: 09 Mar 2011 10:40 AM PST Hi SVK, Although the speed that I am getting in North Delhi is so poor that, in case it is reduced further then the services will get stopped completely. From last three months i am getting a speed of 50 kbps & a download speed of 2 kbps on my system. I am not able to connect to Vodafone 3G even for a minute so far & is still using the Vodafone EDGE. The same is happening from last 3 months & I am really tired with the Vodafone product. I have made many complaints & they are telling me that it will be fixed soon when 3G will be launched in whole of Delhi. Till then they are asking me to wait more. I don' know what to do & feel like going to the consumer court. Vikrant Jain |
