Lighting Up the Last Mile: Fibre Optics are the Way Forward Posted: 04 Mar 2011 02:11 AM PST Well, with fiber being the future, it would be silly for us to build any copper in our network. ---------- Post added at 03:38 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:13 PM ---------- Did you see the date on the article? This is from 2000. It's hardly new. The technology is called Free Space Optics, and the current generation of equipment runs at up to 1.25Gbit/s, not 2.5 or 10Gbit/s as this article claims, and I've not found any commercially available equipment that supports DWDM at multi-gigabit speeds. It's good for point-to-point only, so from the receiver we would have to run cables to the subscriber's premises. It's too expensive to give to individual subscribers since the units cost about US$20,000-30,000 each (1 for each side). 1.25Gbit/s would have to be split between a fairly large number of subscribers - probably 128 at the very least for it to come out with the same economics as fiber (assuming the system is in place for at least 5 years - that's a long wait), but the problem then is speed - we could only guarantee about 1/7th of what we can on fiber - it's still good, but not *as* good. The main problem with actually implementing the system in Mumbai is that the rated distances are about 4km, but with the Mumbai air, smog, smoke and whatever else it's more likely to max out at about 1km - and naturally as with all wireless technology, the further the distance, the more the speed degrades - to achieve 1Gbit/s they recommend under 800m. If you read back far enough, you'll find I was discussing this type of system back in 2009 as an alternative method of reaching certain parts of the city (such as Sion etc) in case the cablewalas choose to not let us lay cables, and it's something we still want to consider if we can't come to any other arrangement. The good thing is though: no spectrum licenses to worry about. Etc etc. We'll probably give it a go, but it would have to be ultra stable - rivalling the Fiber - for us to go ahead and deploy it on a wide scale. |

MTNL 3G on iPhone 4 - Settings & Performance Posted: 03 Mar 2011 11:42 PM PST There is a Rs4500 6 months with a monthly bundled usage of 200GB promotional scheme going in Delhi. Thanks for the heads up, am surely gonna clear this speed capping thing with the officials before making a deal. 380kbit/s for 3G and additional charges for 3.5G and this shitty speed capping, sounds ridiculous. ---------- Post added at 01:12 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:04 PM ---------- Something like this was happening to foreign country users too. Quote: The potential speeds of the HSDPA 3G device could reach up to 7.2mbps. After a meeting on Monday at Orange’s Paris headquarters, the company said it would raise the download cap for iPhone users from 384Kbps to 1Mbps by September 15th. This is an improvement on the ridiculous cap that is in place now, but still slow compared to what “3G” is supposedly capable of. |

activate\register new handset cdma with mtnl mumbai garuda mobile network Posted: 03 Mar 2011 09:40 PM PST At first I thought this was the case, but I've since learned that MTNL's CDMA network is still alive and well, as mentioned in posts above. As such, you should be able to take it to MTNL and activate it somehow - or if MTNL doesn't want to touch it, then you can take it to Tata or Reliance too. That being said, I stand by my suggestion that you consider switching over to GSM technology, as all of the providers are migrating away from CDMA networks, and this will give you the opportunity to upgrade to 3G as well if you want it in future. |
BSNL cuts broadband fee by up to 75% Posted: 03 Mar 2011 09:36 PM PST Oh, whoops. Could it be the subject of India's first bailout or might they be forced to do something like lay-off excess staff or (gasp) start local loop unbundling? If they only made Rs100 per month on 10 million Internet connections by doing LLU, that's 100 Crores extra a month for them. Not much on the grand-scale of BSNL's operations, but it wouldn't hurt. |

Tata Docomo Network Issues & an Ethical Dilemma Posted: 03 Mar 2011 02:08 PM PST Hi Guys, This peculiar problem has been happening at my home & nowhere else for the past one month. I would have full signal on my phones (since their tower is only 200m away) but many a times, when someone calls me they get a message saying that the phone has been switched off when it isn't the case. I could be staring at my phone with full signal & be oblivious to the fact people trying to call me are gettng a message saying the phone is switched off & wouldn't even get missed calls SMS alerts Docomo sends out. However, when I make a phone call, at that time, I would get a barrage of SMSes informing me about the missed calls. I have been told by friends & colleagues that it is a common problem with Tata Docomo in this area, especially in the mornings. I have repeatedly complained to Tata Docomo CC & everytime they promise to look into it but nothing comes out of it. All they can suggest is to remove & reinsert the SIM. We have 2 Tata Docomo connections at home (mine & my wife's) and we both are facing the issue. In these days of intense competetion & Mobile Number Portability, it is easy to port away to another operator. I have long admired the Tatas as one of the few ethical Indian companies (compared to other Indian corporates atleast) & would prefer to be with a Tata company. I have sent an email to their nodal office & have explained that this is my last effort to get the matter fixed. Do you guys think I should wait to see if Tata can fix it or should I port away? I lived abroad for 10 years & have only recently moved back to India. Reading about all the scams in political & corporate sector in the newspapers, I somehow feel I should try to support those who do business with the least sin. Am I being reasonable in this? |

Posted: 03 Mar 2011 05:52 AM PST Airtel Digital TV customer service sucks big time .. This is what I wrote to them .. I have been a long customer of Airtel, including an unlimited blackberry connection and 3G internet broadband connection. (Mobile number 9901xxxx36). Recently I had taken the Airtel Digital HD TV connection (customer id 3007066435). From day one the digital TV quality was poor from Airtel, and I later found that the Signal Quality is coming to a mere 40% whereas the expected one from an HD connection should be around 100% (at least for other digital tv connections). I spoke to the customer care of Airtel Digital TV and the guy who took the call had no idea and he said he will send a person to my home. The person came and declared that the problem was with the LCD TV and not with the picture quality and I could get only that quality from LCD tv. He also declared that 40% is the quality you should expect from an HD box and normal box will be better around 60%. He promptly asked me for the happy code and I did not know that he was going to close the call. He first said he will speak to the MDU person at Ajmera Infinity and resolve the issue, but after that he never turned up. I raised a call again to the customer care two days back, and no one turned up in the last two days. I then called up today again, to my shock, I came to know that the person had closed the call as he could not reach me. I have an airtel mobile connection and the signal quality is very bad at my office(which is on a busy IT corridor in outer Ring Road in Bangalore). I had raised a call for that, that is still outstanding. I had asked Mr. Sandeep Sharma who took my call to transfer my call to the supervisor and he said he cannot transfer at this time and I should call back in an hour. The first thing I am going to do tomorrow is to go and switch my mobile connection from Airtel to Vodafone (thanks to TRAI for number portability) and get more people from my office also follow the same suit. I am extremely fed up with Airtel, had an excellent Dish TV connection for past three years and was forced to take Airtel as the apartment complex has only option of Airtel. I will influence my builder to switch to other Dish connection as soon as possible. You just do not want a digital tv connection which has a quality which prompts my visitors to ask if that was a cable - and that too worse than a cable. |
