When Hayai Broadband Is Gonna Start In Mumbai... Posted: 03 Feb 2011 03:29 AM PST That's quite an old post. The situation in question has been resolved but I am awaiting the final decisions. I've already paid some bribes... though probably not enough. I may just need a suitcase full of money... money that I'd much rather spend on bandwidth and network assets. I'm hoping that one of my directors political connections will be able to help so that the delays can be resolved in a more reasonable fashion. I wouldn't provide unlimited on any form of wireless for technical reasons anyway. I may have to come to India to resolve this situation. I was discussing with my board last night the possibility of my coming there sometime later this month or in March to try and hurry things along. I'm also fed up of Indian Internet Speed. |
Subramanian swamy and corruption exposure Posted: 03 Feb 2011 03:21 AM PST Subramanian swamy is fighting the issues through the courts, along with people like Prashant Bhushan and Ram jethmalani. He has no political or media support; in fact media avoids him with justifiable fear that they may get into the bad books of government or congress. His mission now is to expose corruption and defrock the corrupt by the legal route. Let us wish him success. If he has political ambitions, he can join any party, but that does not seem to be in his agenda now. Of course he will not win an election on his own (neither will MMS). But if he is able to expose the corrupt through judicial process, we and the nation will be benefit; perhaps some will give him due credit then. |
Raja gets arrested - what's the twist in the story now Posted: 03 Feb 2011 03:16 AM PST I guess he was arrested because of taking advantage of his position to benefir some of the mobile companies....atleast thats what the news said this morning... Regarding his release, politicians are never punished in India...He will be in jail for some time with 5star facilities and then released on bail and then CBI will file a closure report stating they could not get any evidence... |

Posted: 03 Feb 2011 01:28 AM PST Yeah we can only hope.... What happens with BSNL is they have made Huawei to manage the BTS and Network issues. But when ever there is a problem blame game begins with BSNL and Huawei and the issue never really gets resolved. When ever there is an issue they do some R&D and like a dumb plumber fix some thing else. So in places where it was fine earlier also will face problem now and vice versa and this keeps going on and on... |
Airtel Broadband Fair Usage Policy "Protest" Posted: 03 Feb 2011 01:27 AM PST airtel is airtel. They're not gonna change their tariff plans instantly just because some few % of their customers are demanding 100+ GB FUPs. Vote with your money. Reliance wire-line broadband - preferably metro Ethernet. |
Posted: 03 Feb 2011 12:51 AM PST looks like airtel is having routing issues with cloudflare (and a couple of other websites). turned off cloudflare for now. airtel folks should be able to access the forum now. folks on opendns should get instant fix as i have updated their cache. :D ---------- Post added at 02:21 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:12 PM ---------- looks like the routing problems are gone. back to cloudflare! |

So before getting excited, lets see if WL makes the cut. I wanted to see what the competition was like but the site says... The statutes of the Nobel Foundation restrict disclosure of information about the nominations, whether publicly or privately, for 50 years. The restriction concerns the nominees and nominators, as well as investigations and opinions related to the award of a prize. So only way is to know is what the shortlist has on it. |

Free ways to boost your internet connection. Posted: 02 Feb 2011 11:07 PM PST The fastest DNS doesn't necessarily mean the fastest download. If you use a DNS server in the US, then websites that use anycasting to deliver content are going to mess up the geolocation, so you'll be pulling information from a place that is less than ideal and it will change the route between you and the destination server. I'm not saying ISP DNS is necessarily ideal or even necessarily the fastest, but for the many larger sites that use Akamai or Limelight caching, if your ISP has an Akamai or Limelight cache (as we will), performance to websites served by that cache are vastly improved. Basically a few extra milliseconds for a DNS query if your ISP has slow DNS servers beats the minutes of frustration waiting for a Youtube clip to come from the US (at much slower speeds) or for Windows Updates to come from Microsoft. In our network, if you were on a data plan, using other DNS servers would probably cause you to be using your data-cap unnecessarily, where the traffic might otherwise not counted towards it. |
Dedicated website for Network Neutrality? Posted: 02 Feb 2011 10:54 PM PST So, I was considering buying a dedicated domain to highlight the whole network neutrality issue wrt India. The point is... I do not want to end up doing it on my own. The idea is to collect information from various sources and put it in a singular location. Anyone interested in collaborating on this thing? It can be a blog. Or a website. I am open to all ideas. The fact remains.. FUP is just the beginning. Next would be network neutrality. |

Google Chrome news and updates Posted: 02 Feb 2011 07:20 PM PST Some new developments... Google Chrome is losing native support for H.264. Microsoft has just released a plugin for Chrome that brings back the support. Microsoft makes available Windows Media Player HTML5 Extension for Chrome The funny thing? Twitter / Christian Heilmann: @shanselman the fun thing ... Anyways. Google has already announced that they would release WebM plugin for Internet Explorer. Google talks about WebM. Plugins coming for Internet Explorer and Apple Safari! So, on Windows at least. Airtel Throttling/Shaping BitTorrent Traffic: Report Posted: 02 Feb 2011 10:25 AM PST I agree with you to a point. I come from a country where we actually have a privacy act, which makes it technically illegal for me to mention to anyone else that I even saw a particular person at a pharmacy or at the doctors and so forth, and I've grown up with a fairly staunch view on personal privacy. But India doesn't really have any such legislature in place, and it's not really covered properly by the constitution (so it's not a fundamental right in India - and yes, I'm aware of Article 21 but it's not legally specific enough), and as I mentioned in this post to you, ISPs even India has been monitoring phone calls and internet traffic for donkeys. On a phone, there is a certain expectation of privacy - it's supposed to be a 1-to-1 device, but on the Internet... despite virtual anonymity, privacy is really only as good as the trust established between you and the server. Recently, Tunisia was supposedly capturing all users Facebook usernames and passwords. It was able to do this because like many countries, Tunisia's traffic goes through a couple of what I like to call "censorship proxies". Technically, the Indian government could do the same if it were so inclined. |

List of channels missing on Tata Sky DTH Posted: 02 Feb 2011 06:55 AM PST atleast all the people from andhra hate tata sky for not providing only movie channel gemini movies in telugu(which was available before as teja tv).. only fools go for extras without giving basic stuff. people will definetely be frustated when they not provided basic things. i'm sure tata sky fails miserably in near future in andhra. |
BSNL 3g Internet not as its promissed !! Posted: 02 Feb 2011 05:48 AM PST No, this is a very very common misconception. The average indian is illiterate and barely educated if at all. You can't compare the average Joe in the USA/UK with graduates in India : which is what everyone seems to do. Quote: We understand the cost-value proposition far better. Quote: No 'developed' country has the economic, social and geographic diversity of India. Quote: Therefore, no single connectivity solution would be optimal in India. Quote: While fibre optic and cable may be possible in urban land masses (cables are already laid), cost and maintenance would be impractical in India's hinterland. Cable internet is an entirely different matter. Infrastructure costs aren't that high - almost every home on India with capacity to afford internet has cable TV. Cable internet is an extremely cost-effective and reliable wired alternative. The only reason that cable doesn't take off properly is possibly because the cable lines are controlled by local mafias (lolz) who offer craptastic service. But obviously our government won't do anything to fix this. Quote: That is where wifi, wimax and 3G / 4G become so much more cost-effective and fast to implement. Quote: Mobile internet like 3G is also a great boon to people who travel, and require constant connectivity. Wifi *IS* being marketed as a "cheap" and better alternative to wired internet all over india, especially in big cities. Wireless internet only supplements wired internet; and has the extremely situational use of access on the move. There is absolutely zero interest to improve twisted pair dsl/adsl lines and even less interest to implement cable internet. Wireless internet has fluctuating speeds, horrendous packet loss issues and signal issues. It's great for casual stuff like checking emails occasionally obviously; but total garbage for anything that requires a decent internet connection. It completely escapes me why people buy 3G in droves for exclusively home usage for higher prices when plans like BSNL home 500 or other unlimited plans that are also quite cheap are so readily available with DSL. Please try to face facts; it's a common delusion to think India has the most intelligent people in the entire world and everything our government does is glorious. |
Very bad experience of Reliance broadband services Posted: 02 Feb 2011 05:33 AM PST @Dhananjay.... Why dont u directly talk to any executive at their CC?? At times its lot more responsive & helpful. If u r in Mumbai, i am pretty sure that even if u just register a complaint, u will get a call from their side. It happened to me yesterday only - within 20/25 minutes of registering, i got a call. And i repeat again - all may not be that lucky, but still, the CC is responsive. |
