Hari

I am using UL 750. Getting around 60 - 70 KBps from good servers. It is the best choice if you are going to switch from ULD 900. Speed will be very less in UL Combo 625 and UL 499. But if you have a tight budget, for any of these plans. It gives 256 Kbps unlimited without any FUP. If your budget allows choose UL 750 or UL 750 Combo. Hope this help. If in doubt, feel free to ask.

Nivyah broadband launches new, updated website

Hi Sridhar. Welcome to IBF.
OK guys who were having problems with Nivyah, here's your chance if you are still subscribers.
Keep this objective and give him a chance.
I am not a Nivyah subscriber but could become one in future if I see good reports emerging.
Q1. What exactly is meant by the term "upto" used in the plans in the column Transfer Rate?

Democratic peace theory

I subscribe to the realist world view.

Supporters of realism in international relations in general argue that not democracy or its absence, but considerations and evaluations of power, cause peace or war. Specifically, many realist critics claim that the effect ascribed to democratic, or liberal, peace, is in fact due to alliance ties between democratic states which in turn are caused, one way or another, by realist factors.

BSNL Dataone started working so well since recently

Posted: 01 Feb 2011 02:21 AM PST

The general consensus of most Airtel customers at the moment when asked the question of "should I join Airtel Broadband?" is: don't.

In fact run away. Fast. It seems that over the last several months Airtel has created a negative sentiment amongst it's retail customers. As I understand it, many subscribers are switching to Reliance, if it's available.

First Person Who Really Enoyed the Freedom MNP!!!??

Posted: 01 Feb 2011 02:21 AM PST

Hi,

Today I have sucessfully ported my airtel mobile number to vodafone.

25th jan - I went to vodafone store for porting and got a free sim !!!
27th jan - I recieved a call from airtel telling me " we have received a request from vodafone for porting your number but airtel is having the best coverage and very
reliable service,we have best plan etc... so still if you want to cancel the porting request you have to sms CANCEL PO to 56161 within 24 hrs." But I
Didn't.
31th jan - I recieved a sms from vodafone on my airtel number saying that " the porting request no..... has been accepted by your current mobile operator. We will inform you the porting time and day soon!!"
1st feb - I switched on my mobile at 9 AM and i had no signal and then it came "sim card registeration failed" on my airtel sim, so i thought that my number would have ported to vodafone,I inserted the vodafone sim and i was activated!!! I got 5 rs balance and validity till 2015. My outgoing calls were working but I was unable to receive calls !!!!! When i called my no.from my mom's no. I heard" the airtel no. is temporarily disconnected" !!!!!!!! But till 9:30 AM i had started receiving calls on my ported no.

Now I'm able to recieve calls from every operator and i was able to top-up my phone successfully from vodafone store..

At last I'm free from STUPID AIRTEL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Free ways to boost your internet connection.

Posted: 01 Feb 2011 02:15 AM PST

This is not necessarily advisable. Many ISPs have caching servers in their networks which greatly improve performance of sites such as Youtube. If you use OpenDNS, even though these DNS servers are distributed throughout the world, you'll end up hitting some OTHER ISP's cache for such sites, and your performance will be heavily degraded: depending on your internet usage, of course.

If you're accessing Youtube, would you rather the video was streamed from somewhere in India or somewhere in Singapore or even the US?

To solidify my point, ping YouTube - Broadcast Yourself. using your ISP's DNS servers. In India, something less than 70ms should be acceptable. Then change your DNS servers to OpenDNS or even Google DNS (as above). ping YouTube - Broadcast Yourself. again and you'll probably be pinging to a different IP address with a much higher pingtime.

Here's an example of what I got on my ISP versus some public DNS:

Good for you formfollowsfunction, you are pretty much happy with MTNL, well I dont have MTNL
here in chennai......But thank god I have been safe from Airtel for last two times when I applied for
new connection and stayed with Reliance - once wired and there after Wimax (while shifting location,
wired was not feasible and there was no feasibilty of Airtel)

Well earlier at home, I used 2 Mbps Night Unlimited plan... but ofc in my area I faced a hell lot of
disconnection problem because of wire getting cut every now and then (either of road construction,
sewage construction or theft - lawl those BSNL employee used to complaint "Reliance guys do it
intentionally to make BSNL customer to shift to Reliance, hmm maybe possibble!!). No doubt I being
heavy downloader, it was pretty painfull for me to stay in this plan ... specially to get up and start
download at night (yeah I know there are telnet script to do so... but guess what it never worked out
for me... as I have using Windows 7...whenafter I acame to know about this script!!)

Now, as I moved to Chennai..... for my job!! I made up my mind, I have to go for private connection.
So guess what even before moving there...I called Chennai`s local Airetle CC no. to enquire plan and
was pretty disappointed that they dont have any Non FUP PLan, still after getting my flat, I applied for Airtel.
But I was lucky even the thid small DB being there near my house....Airtel was unable to provide service as of some
Main DB getting chocked as of Road construction. hmmmh thnaks god I was saved!!

And then what I was searching for an alternative. Me personally have never heard of Reliance...but somehow
I saw an advertisement in my area of Reliance so I searched of it on net, the tarrif was impressive specially the
1 Mbps + NO FUP.... what else a heavy downloader needs :D. Then what I called up them, there was a lil feasibilty
issue, the maindistribution tower was a lil far, but the manager of that area promised they will surely be able to
make it feasible, and guess what within 1 week I was given the connection..... I used it for three months.
And was the most happiest guy...No FUP at all...an awesome connection I use to download and upload like crazy!!

When I shifted to the new area after my training got over, the wired line feasibilty was not there.
So, again thought and eventually applied for Airtel as of no other option, but some force stopped me again.

Airtel didnt have feasibilty, but before I came to know about the same.. someguy from Reliance called with
an alternative of Reliance Wimax. Now Wimax being pretty costly... I was lil apprehensive, but the other option
being BSNL.... and that too they dont have any impressive 1 Mbps UL plans. I decided to go for it, but this time
my 6 rommates deciede to use the same(earlier there we were having two different connection, now ofc we
had one connection but we bought a Nice Cisco router this time so that everyone can use it properlly, plus they
not being much of a downloader, I am in win win situtatiion).

The plan with Static IP, and wallah it has been awesome, no downtime at all!! I am simply loving it.
I download like crazy and upload like crazy...A nd guess what dont have be worried of any FUP......
My life is peacefull with the Reliance Non FUPed connection.

So all you guys who are already fed up, getting fed up or thinking to go for Airtrl.
My friend, dont go for thes fraud gays who have been going downhill since2-3 Years now.
I had have good experience with Reliance... maybe you may as well!!
Or with MTNL........ but yeah start avoiding these fuacktels/

Thats what I have to say after reading this thread!!
Thanks and Regards!!

MTNL 3G - Rs 4500 for 6 months unlimited

Posted: 01 Feb 2011 12:58 AM PST

The 6 mths for Rs. 4500 is worth every penny. I pay 999 pm for 1 Mbps Unlimited plan from Mtnl Mumbai which for 6 mths turns to 5994. This is costlier compared to 6 mths for Rs. 4500. Hope this 3G data plans comes to Mtnl Mumbai.

@manig
I too had that digital noise glitch, like some bee humming for a few seconds, really annoying. And the problem with HD channels is that they less volume compared to other sd channels as u earlier pointed out. I think that might be due to that the channels are encoded in 5.1 ch audio whereas our lcd tv are 2 ch only. Quite irritating increasing and decreasing the volume when u switch over HD to Sd channels and vice versa.

Of course But I was talking about Overscan....its a feature of the TV to enlarge the picture....5% to 15 % ...5% does the trick.....it removes most of the noise on the borders.
Also regarding the audio....you need to connect the stb to an AV receiver or HTIB for optimum sound.....if you take the sound out from the digital out to the HTIB/AV Receiver there is no volume differences.....and as rohaan rightly pointed it is the downmix which reduces the volume....the 5.1DD in starplus HD in fact pushes the volume up and gives too much boom to the audio than desired....the NGC adio is also screwed up....Only Discovery HD world has the right audio mix in TS HD

I dont think waiting for HD plus would be fruitful, except recording facility I dont think it offers anything else. How many of us record tv. I myself had waited 2 mths for HD stb, happy with it. And HD plus would be costlier than HD stb and Tata Sky + stb.

Actually we people tend to criticize without realising that the temporary inconvenience may be in fact a change for the for the better.Similar situation occurs when we are inconvenienced to go through bumpy roads when some flyover or underpass is under construction ,later on the same makes our lives more easy.I also did the same thing in my earlier post.

I happened to enter the self care portal yesterday night and similarly saw some pending bills.By the way no one has received the last two bills and this is clearly mentioned on the latest bill which perhaps every one will get soon as the last date is 18-2-2011.

The reason for this is the introduction of the new billing system which is a big improvement on the previous one.Now you can see itemised billing of your calls and broadband usages which is very helpful.Apart from this all users will get a customer id which can be used to change your landline or broadband plan online at the selfcare portal or for writing online complaints etc.

I got all the above info just by visiting the selfcare portal,no one in BSNL told me all this.
So from now onwards we should concentrate on selfcare rather than rely on BSNL to care for our difficulties.

Selfcare portal is a good initiative. However,BSNL should see to it that it is always accessible without errors.

BSNL MODEM: Warranty Period

Posted: 31 Jan 2011 11:05 PM PST

Hi,

I recently got a new broadband connection and purchased ADSL basic modem from BSNL.
With in two weeks of purchase modem is not starting properly, and i suspect this is due
to loose connection at the power port. I went to BSNL office on this issue asking for repair or replacement.
The most funny thing I heard from them is, warranty is only on the accessories like adapter and cables but not on the modem.
I just want clarification on this one. If warranty period covers modem also, please help me whom to contact so that my problem gets solved.

Regards,
Kranthi

Official Google Blog: World IPv6 Day: firing up the engines on the new Internet protocol

Quote:

On World IPv6 Day, we’ll be taking the next big step. Together with major web companies such as Facebook and Yahoo!, we will enable IPv6 on our main websites for 24 hours. This is a crucial phase in the transition, because while IPv6 is widely deployed in many networks, it’s never been used at such a large scale before. We hope that by working together with a common focus, we can help the industry prepare for the new protocol, find and resolve any unexpected issues, and pave the way for global deployment.
Quote:

The good news is that Internet users don’t need to do anything special to prepare for World IPv6 Day. Our current measurements suggest that the vast majority (99.95%) of users will be unaffected. However, in rare cases, users may experience connectivity problems, often due to misconfigured or misbehaving home network devices. Over the coming months we will be working with application developers, operating system vendors and network device manufacturers to further minimize the impact and provide testing tools and advice for users.

then why did u even mention 24hrs?? this is again clear cheating.

Opera Tech Break

Posted: 31 Jan 2011 02:42 PM PST

ah well. they still dominate the mobile market and are likely to do so because mozilla still cannot get their firefox mobile edition right.

and opera is very quick to support new devices and platforms. mozilla on the other hand has been working on their android browser for such a long time.

i guess, this is one field where open source does not really do very well. all the popular mobile browsers are pretty much closed source.

Tata Docomo GPRS speed reduced after the launch of 3G

Posted: 31 Jan 2011 11:11 AM PST

I have a suggestion for Tata DoCoMo. It is pretty obvious that the company has deliberately done something to restrict Data speed for its 2G customers post launch of 3G services in November'2010. The reason is simple: An average 3G customer will be generating lot more revenue for the company compared to an average 2G customer for the same amount of Data usage. Simple Maths: A 5 GB Data plan for 3G customer costs Rs.1000/- and a 6 GB plan for 2G customer costs Rs.95/-. And thats the reason why the company has restricted its server capacity & speed for 2G customers to give its 3G customer a higher priority.

My suggestion for the company is like this. They should think of introducing premium 2G Data plans, where they will not be in the restricted capacity & speed category. For eg: The standard 2G Data plan for upto 6 GB usage costs Rs.95 per month. Tata DoCoMo could introduce a Premium 2G Data plan for equivalent usage for something like Rs.200/- or Rs.250/-. There are people out there who wouldn't mind to pay a little higher amount to get better Data speeds on 2G. This should atleast be available as an option to the customers.

MTNL Triband - Frequent Disconnects Even Though ADSL Light Is Steady

Posted: 31 Jan 2011 09:24 AM PST

I guess its a policy of MTNL (albeit a nonsensical one) to disconnect a session every 6 hours. So writing to higher ups won't be of much use.

@formfollowsfunction: It would be good to check the SNR & Line Attenuation values when the connection drops although I know this particular model of D-Link is a troublesome modem for some users (including me) who had to change it after failing to find a solution to this inexplicable disconnection problem.

BSNL 3g Internet not as its promissed !!

Posted: 31 Jan 2011 08:14 AM PST

Network speed has multiple variables. But keep yelling at BSNL, and eventually something will give. That's the law of the Universe.

As regards your questions, yes, the speeds are checked using SpeedTest.net.

My actual download speeds are good enough to have a stutter-free Skype video session on a 20" iMac screen, and YouTube streaming, and watching a streaming HD video.

I'm a Mac person, so I don't need to use any other software to download YouTube videos; QuickTime is sufficient.

BSNL 3G Technical TEAM VISIT

Posted: 31 Jan 2011 04:37 AM PST

Why everytime bsnl choosing NORTH or SOUTH region???
There is easy availability of resources in EAST region.
I cant understand what's wrong with mentality of BSNL officers.
They are trying to do setup in undeveloped areas and wasting lots of time.
During 3G spectrum bids highest bids are on west region (defined by BSNL only).
Mumbai, delhi n Maharashtra are 3 top bidded region.
But BSNL officers have 0 profit sense.
BSNL IS FULL OF AGED PPL WHO EVEN DOESNT CARE(or dnt konw) ABT NEW TECHNOLOGIES.

Hey, BSNL has now outsourced solving of broadband problems to a 3rd party. The guys who came to my place today were pretty smart. They changed the filter and my speeds are now back to normal.
