Slow MTNL Broadband speed- 1 Mbps plan Rs 999

Posted: 26 Sep 2010 03:21 AM PDT

I'm having the same problem from the past 3-4 days. My stats are:

Downstream Upstream

SNR Margin: 41.0 39.5 db
Line Attenuation: 6.0 3.6 db
Data Rate: 1024 262 kbps

But in Speedtest.net, my download speed shows 0.36 Mbps or thereabouts. I usually don't have problems with speed so I can't figure out what the problem is. Any solutions I can try?

BSNL broadband : Traceroute screenshot. Please help me understand

To my understanding, since most of the web sites are located outside India, it is more prudent to check the usage for out side servers. For example ( I am attaching the screen shots here)
This is the server tested in India.

The speed drops incrementally when tested outside:

But then this is part of the story. I need to access scientific journals which are hosted in US. This is frustrating from a user's perspective.

Is it also because that BSNL has faulty traffic routing as mentioned repeatedly across?

Looking for a used gprs & edge modem /mobile

frankly speaking, you'll have hard time with configuring them. also most such mobile would be non-3G
so why to invest money on it.

if you need non-3G usb modem, a second hand would be 700-800 and best would be to go for 3G enabled one so you don't need to buy it again and again.
check with local store in your town, i am sure they could arrange.

Internet via Airtel on the Edge Network is quite good.

Thanks buddy, wish you could have been a day or two early, was too eager to know this.
anyway I used vodafone for approx 10 months, and now using AIRTEL on same usb stick, I must says, Airtel Edge is better than vodafone.
Voda sim is already in my pocket now and will be sent for connection closure in next 24 hours, why pay Rs.550/mo. when you get double speed on Rs.98 from airtel.

on Airtel my file download speed is always above 20kbps and sometimes even 34-40kbps while in voda it never easily stayed above 10kbps
this even when both voda and airtel towers are under 100m from my house and can see them from window.

@Funkatronic
If you intend to advice the user on some products then please provide links so as to help him choose. It would have been really helpful for the user if you had specifically mentioned the make/model of your router with price.
:)

As i said, i'm agreeing with you when it comes to coverage, but connectivity (or now that you've labeled it speed, is only necessary for people who need to move large amounts of data from one device to another in their wireless network, or maybe streaming a 1080p mkv to their xTreamer, which would be rather hilarious to watch, on a G network)

And I too, will stand by my claims, having been on N for two years now. Good range (Only if your other devices are N too) Amazing Wifi Speed (If you want to stream Movies, or move large files significantly faster than G)
Connectivity? No.

IMHO, best way to improve connectivity is to first see what band all your devices use, then buy a router accordingly, proper placement helps, and if you're living in an Apartment complex, and have a lot of other neighbors using Wifi, changing the Channel you are broadcasting will help with "connectivity" (As very few people change the default broadcast channel on 2.4Ghz, you get a lot of interference.

Which is what im saying, lets not push N routers without asking what laptops/PC/phones the user intends to integrate into his wireless network. FYI, earlier draft-N standard routers also cause problems with the Final-N spec (Sometimes)

My point being, its pointless to push N (yes, its the fastest, best) unless the person whos using it can utilize it fully, otherwise a properly set up G network will work just as well.

Fiction rules- Zee TV gears up fiction line-up and scores on content innovation

Posted: 26 Sep 2010 01:57 AM PDT

A lot has changed in the General Entertainment Channels (GEC) space over the last few years in the way that entertainment is consumed but the weekly ratings keep reiterating the fact that nothing sells better than drama. The hype surrounding the upcoming big ticket shows has got most leading GECs going on an overdrive to outbeat each other this October with its non-fiction properties in the weekday prime time that are traditionally fiction slots. Where other channels are showing breakfree content to gain TRPs, signing big Bollywood names and purchasing movie rights at unreal costs, do they convert to grabbing more eyeballs and revenues?
Apparently not! Two seasons of IPl, Dus Kadam, Kya Aap Panchvi Pass Hai?, Bigg Boss, Entertainment Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega, Fear Factor have shown that shows with Bollywood celebrities create buzz and capture eyeballs only in its launch week but have not been able to sustain it for the entire season whereas fiction slots stay steady after the first week and even grow during the period. For example, the recently launched Fear Factor Khatron Ke Khiladi Season 3 with Priyanka Chopra as host that opened with TVR of 5.49 TVR (Week 37 data – TAM) has dropped to an average of 2.7 TVR in its second week (Week 38 data – TAM).
On the other hand, Zee TV has not launched reality-based shows at the cost of the fiction shows or made knee jerk announcements with Bollywood Superstars to counter others. Premiering on September 20, 2010, it has launched a new fiction show, Preet Se Bandhi Ye Dori Ram Milaayi Jodi at 9 30 pm. The flagship channel of Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited has always managed to increase its GRPs in its non-film programmes with shows such as Choti Bahu, Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Hi Kijo, Ek Veer Stree Ki Kahaani Jhansi Ki Rani and Pavitra Rishta.
During weekends also, Zee TV is also a pioneer in scripting events as part of fiction storyline. The introduction of reality element on special episodes of fiction shows is actually an idea to utilise some of the extra space that is available on the weekend and create some properties that will engage and entertain viewers. As per TAM data:
· Choti Bahu Janmashtami Special episode on 14th Aug 2009 (Fri 1930 – 2130 hrs) rated 5.5 TVR with a Reach of 18 Mn (TG: CS4+, Market: HSM)

· Pavitra Rishta Marriage episode on 27th July 2009 (Mon 2100 – 2200 hrs) rated 5.4 TVR with a Reach of 14.4 Mn (TG: CS4+, Market: HSM)

· Mera Naam Karegi Roshan Reet Ki Shaadi episode on 28th August 2010 (Sat 1930 – 2130 hrs) rated 3.1 TVR with a Reach of 16 Mn (TG: CS4+, Market: HSM)

Nitin Vaidya, COO, Zee Entertainment Enterprises and Business Head, Zee TV says, "We are not relaxing our thrust on original programming but devising innovative ways to grab more eyeballs. Whenever we have hosted an event with our stars around a highpoint in a show, we get a good response from loyal viewers & also attract new viewers. The first such was the Janmashtami event two years ago on Choti Bahu that redefined the 7 30 pm slot. We've also had similar very successful content innovation for 12/24 Karol Bagh (Jagrata Special), Mera Naam Karegi Roshan (Reet Ki Aayegi Baraat) & recently, Ganesh Special on Pavitra Rishta. We are confident about holding our ratings. As a platform, Zee TV has the strength and appetite to get more eyeballs and is perhaps the only channel that believes firmly that no matter what, fiction will continue to be the channel driver."
A firm believer that Zee doesn't formulate strategies based on non -fiction with film celebrities as they are a short term phenomenon, he says, "Non fiction shows mostly do not impact the serials beyond a point, as the stories are placed intelligently keeping in mind the disruptive element of these shows. The Top 10 shows across GEC remains high on loyalty and any impact is only short term."
And on the weekend events, Mr. Vaidya adds, "This is not only a programming innovation but also gives marketing an opportunity to create buzz & build reach. Once content is shown as a special then we increase our viewer base and our reach also increases. Today viewers are drawn to our events because it is a wholesome entertainment spectacle. This is one content and marketing innovation that Zee TV will carry forward."
The recent Ormax Media study conducted on General Entertainment Channels and the loyalty they enjoy also states that Zee has more loyalists than Colors. In the study, the loyalty quotient is identified on the basis of time spent on the particular channel. Zee TV has always believed in presenting different and unique story lines. From raising a social issue with Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Hi Kijo to spreading awareness on domestic violence through Yahaan Main Ghar Ghar Kheli to reviving history with Jhansi Ki Rani to bringing you wholesome family dramas and love stories, Zee TV is truly the one stop destination for complete entertainment.

Ranbir: The perfect gentleman

Posted: 26 Sep 2010 01:55 AM PDT

Lady luck seems to be smiling on Sugandha Mishra these days. Following her performance with Priyanka Chopra on Zee TV's Hero Honda Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Singing Superstar, Sugandha was also privy to a dose of the legendary Kapoor chivalry. With all the excitement of having Ranbir Kapoor on the show, the poor girl ended up falling off stage and spraining her ankle during rehearsals.Being the gentleman that he is, Ranbir went forward to escort an injured Sugandha to and fro from the stage for her performance. Chivalry is not dead…not with Ranbir around for sure!!!

Also, while on stage the actor recollected her desire of standing with him in the famous Titanic pose. Being the affable young man that he is, Ranbir gladly obliged to pose with her, much to her obvious delight.
"My leg was paining a lot after the accident during rehearsals, but I never expected a superstar like him to come and help me get to the stage. He was SUCH a gentleman!" gushed an excited Sugandha when we spoke to her after the show.
Thoughtfulness & making dreams come true is an ancient Kapoor tradition…that holds true even today!!!
Watch Ranbir as he makes dreams come true on Hero Honda Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Singing Superstar on Saturday, September 25, 2010 at 9.30 pm on Zee TV.

Priyanka Chopra Sings LIVE on TV for the first time

Posted: 26 Sep 2010 01:54 AM PDT

Priyanka Chopra is well known in the Indian film industry for her beauty and more recently for taking Bollywood by storm with her versatility as an actress, having delivered one smash hit after another. What many don't know is the fact that this lissome lass is also a veritable powerhouse when it comes to singing a tune. While on Zee TV's Hero Honda Sa Re Ga Ma Pa to promote her upcoming Anjaana Anjaani with co star Ranbir Kapoor and director Siddharth Anand, music directors Vishal – Shekar requested the beauty to sing the song "Tinka Tinka" .

A little known fact is that way back in 2005, during the making of Karam, our Piggy Chops
had sung the playback for the track "Tinka Tinka". But since the young lass was just finding her feet as an actress in the industry, she did not want to be put into the niche of a playback singer and hence asked Alisha Chinoy to do the playback for the track. Looks like Bollywood has finally found themselves a heroine for all seasons!

Having synced along with Sugandha's performance, Priyanka proceeded to take to the stage with her own rendition of the song. With her rich powerful voice and soulful melody, she did not seem in the least bit nervous or apprehensive as she went on stage and performed on live television for the first time. And it certainly is a performance to remember! Watch out all established singers who playback for Priyanka…with a magical voice like hers, she really doesn't need anyone to sing for her!!!

Ranbir’s Secret Weekend Wedding??

Posted: 26 Sep 2010 01:51 AM PDT

Pretty and talented Zee TV's Hero Honda Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Singing Superstar, Rini Chandra, had come all prepared with a bagful of shagun items necessary to conduct a wedding. A huge fan of Ranbir Kapoor, Rini proposed to him when he made an appearance as a celebrity guest along with Priyanka Chopra to promote their latest flick, Anjaana Anjaani. The dashing Ranbir who had no intention of leaving a lady at the altar, ran onto the stage and accepted the charming young lady's proposal, much to the audience and Rini's delight. And, Ranbir got married to her in such a jiffy before she could even wink an eye.

Infact, Priyanka had already set a precedent of getting married to Zee TV's Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Lil Champs contestant Swarit earlier this year. She was overheard welcoming Ranbir to the family saying "Ye toh mera sasural hai, meri pehla shaadi bhi yahi par hui thi." What followed was a totally filmy ishtyle wedding with director Siddharth Anand & all the mentors joining in to marry off the Anjaana and Anjaani. Rini's kanyadaan was done by none other than Piggy Chops, who was in absolute raptures in getting her co-star married into the same family that was present at her own wedding. So excited were the newly married couple to be off on their honeymoon that they had to be stopped by Priyanka and brought back to the set. Said Piggy chops , "" arrreee…honeymoon ke liye itni jaldi kya hai…show khatam karke phir chale jaana…".

Ekta fumes: "No way will Manav & Archana dance!!!"

Posted: 26 Sep 2010 01:49 AM PDT

Delighting its viewers with an extravaganza on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi, Zee TV's popular soap Pavitra Rishta has lined up a 2-hour Ganesha Special packed with mind-blowing dance acts by the channel's most popular stars at 8 pm on Sunday, 19th September. While the rehearsals and the shoot for this mega-episode were still on, producer Ekta Kapoor decided to pay a surprise visit to check on what's brewing on the sets!

To her complete shock, Ekta discovered that her team was busy making her lead protagonists Manav and Archana rehearse for a "dance sequence" together even though the current track of the show sees the two facing difficult times ... particularly with Manav getting married to Shravani and Archana tying the knot with Jaywant! Very upset, Ekta didn't mince words while expressing her displeasure, "There has to be a thread of continuity and consisitency in the plot even if a festive celebration comes up. The current track shows a growing distance between Manav and Archana. I am not about to make things frivolous by throwing in a dance number for the heck of it!" Her team countered that they had factored in a dance act with Manav & Archana based on a strong public demand to see the duo together. Moreover, actors Sushant Rajput and Ankita Lokhande had spent nearly three days getting the intricate choreography right!

On getting many pleas from the team to retain the act and give the junta what they want, Ekta devised a smarter plan!!! Manav and Archana dancing in reality is a problem, right? Well, they can always dance in a dream! So, you still get to see your favorite TV jodi shaking a leg on screen. Actors bhi happy, junta bhi happy aur Producer Ekta bhi happy! Way to go, girl!
